My Newbie Review of DAoC

Greetings, everyone image

I've been playing DAoC for a little over a week now, and I wanted to share my feelings about the game so far.

THIS GAME IS GREAT! Omg, what a surprise find for me.  In the past, I had seen advertisments for DAoC, but I thought it was complete PvP and RvR.  That certainly is not the case!  While PvP and RvR are large parts (and from what I hear, the most fun), the PvE part of the game is wonderful!  The races and classes are some of the most interesting I have ever seen in an MMORPG.  I've been playing three classes so far: a Vampiir, Warden and Reaver and I must say, all of them are quite different and a blast to play!

The graphics and environment are highly detailed and a treat for the eye.  I was completely blown away each time I added an expansion pack to see what had been done since the last one.  Mythic has redesigned a lot of the landscape and towns, along with the cities to make them more detailed and up to date.  I have never seen another MMORPG company that has gone back and redrawn areas in a game that had already been done!  The different armors, particle effects from spells and mobs are all in such a variety, you don't see the same thing that often (at least I haven't so far).

Questing in DAoC is a lot of fun!  It's not just "go out and kill 10 beetles and then report back to the NPC"... it's much more detailed and fun than that.  It blows my mind that there are other games in the MMORPG world that have "Quest" in their titles and they don't have quests that are anything like what you find here... I've become a questaholic!

Coming from a variety of other MMO's (including SWG, EQ2, Horizons, WoW), I must say that I am having the most fun in this game than I have in all the other ones combined.  I don't feel a grind, there's no need to camp a mob, the community is quite friendly and Mythic itself seems to really care about it's game AND it's customers... quite a refreshing feeling.  I've recruited 3 other friends over to DAoC and they too are having a great time.  I only wish I had found this game a few years ago.. I would have saved myself a lot of frustration!

Here's to a long successful life for DAoC and Mythic!

I'm one of the three friends that JonMichael referred to in his post and I'd like to take this opportunity to also applaud Mythic on DAoC.  I must say, I started playing the 14 day free trial feeling extremely doubtful that this game would be enough to lure me away from EQ2.  To my delight, I cancelled my account with SOE on day two of playing DAoC.

There are a few things I'm struggling with, mostly to do with the UI,  however much of that looks like it's being addressed in the upcoming patch.  I do miss having a hotkey to "target self", I find using my mouse to click on my toon to be cumbersome but that's only a minor inconvenience in an otherwise wonderful game.

Welcome to DAoC to you, as well.

As to the UI - There are a number of user created UIs around. Derida's is nice, except she isn't updating it anymore (it's fine for now) and you can get it at Derida Also, Emerikol has a great ui and you can get that one here Emerikol

You can make macros in Dark Age. Once you make a macro you will get a button that you can place on one of your quickbars. To make a macro to target yourself type: /macro self /tar <your name>
You can then place this button on one of your quickbars and even bind a key to it if you wish.

    EDIT -- Make links clicky

I started playing recently as well, Friday to be exact. I love the game, it's alot of fun to play. I've tried out all three realms so far and a variety of the classes. But I think I'll stick with my Runemaster on Gareth, he's alot of fun to play!

Use the hotkey for "target nearest friendly" (F9 by default) to target yourself.  Hitting it a 2nd time will target the nearest player besides you.  No need to make a macro :)  Save yourself a hotkey.

Awsome...That kind of incourages me. I have been taking a break for awhile. I have been involved in HL and CSS..and other FPSs recently. I am ready to come back to MMOS and I used to play daoc back when it first came out. I was the person who was there for all those memorable bugs like when the wizzy could blast you through the keep walls. ::::02::

I am going to download the trial and try it out again.

I have been apart of this genre for ..gads, 7 years now, and climbing, and while EverQuest was 'my poison' for most of this time, there has forever been one company that has always placed first in my eyes in terms of respect commanded, and the integrity not only of it's designers but the community and the game itself...and that game, is DAoC.

I've never tried it, but if there was one game I'd play right now, that would be it.  Long live Mythic.

I use to play back in the very begining when the game was released, and i have to say the game had its up and downs. But i have returned after a very long break and i am happy to say i am very happy with all the new added features and changes. I had left DAoC a few weeks after NF was released. So i have been gone for quite awhile. All i can really ask for now in hopes this feature might be added or in the works is a mailing system like that in WOW, sure would be nice to be able to send money or items to my alts when i need to. Other then that i am having a blast with the game just like i did when i opened the box and installed the game on day 1 of release.

I play on mid/pellinor , i have a 50 thane who just got a long deserving love in this new patch, a 50 shadowblade and a 5 skald. I am working on getting my hunter to 50 and he just got lvl 48 tonight. DAoC was my very first MMORPG and i could not have picked a better game to pop my MMORPG cherry heh.

Keep up the great work Mythic.

    50 Thane - Morpheos
    50 Shadowblade - Lawless
    50 Skald - Luxen
    48 Hunter - Dragonus - soon to be 50

Unable to buy the set of expansions in the UK, or I would play.

Need to release the Epic edition from the States across Europe and the UK.

You can order them from Mythic's site:

    1. Download the free trial.
    2. Buy the expansions Catacombs and Darkness Rising online from Mythic.
    3. Install expansions via digital download from Mythic

    Enjoy...

Your call but it IS available in Europe, just not at your local store.  If you would prefer to play on European servers the same is available from the Camelot GOA site.

DAoC is no doubt a great game. The mechanics, weaponry/armor, and RvR are supurb. The lore and story has diverged a lot from the standard Celts Vs Brits Vs Norse setting that it was when the game first game out. However, the new lore somewhat fits.

The reason why I don't come back to play Camelot is that I love social interaction. In particular, I love social interaction when I'm PvEing. In DAoC, the best way to gain experience (since the Catacombs expansion) is in these really boring and easy dungeons called "Task Dungeons." There is no need for Crowd Control in these or any skill what so ever. The mobs are extremely easy, drop a good amount of cash, and give off way too much experience for their difficulty. This has left the main areas of hunting (original world / Shrouded Isles) virtually empty even though there are some great hunting places out there.

I think that the game should move towards a heavier quest system similar to WoW for PvE. I LOVE the quests in DAoC and I think that Mythic should use them to their full potential, and make those the best way to level up instead of Task Dungeons. Also, remove TD's all together and just have the instance dungeons (similar to WoW in that you go there for the loot/special quests, but when the time comes to level up you're back in the world with other people).

That's just my 2 coppers worth from a long time DAoC player. I started playing the 2nd day it was live. I remember hunting siabras and giant tree monsters out in the wilderness on my Warden back in the day. Bring back those experiences!! Down with task dungeons!!

Actually, and I'm saying this from a player PoV, not a Mythic Employee trying to argue your point or anything, but TDs aren't the fastest XP in the game. Well, not at the higher levels. Lower levels they are, sure, but at higher levels not even close. :) Most people don't realize that because they're lazy and complacent. TDs are "easy", you just get the task, run a couple hundred yards, do it, rinse and repeat. I never level my toons in TDs past 35 or so though. :)

O.o then where do you level. I was thinking still in catacombs. Are you doing quests in the underground forest? Anything in the "original" world (no expansions ect...) I cant see would give you more.

What is the URL for the GOA site please ?

My connection is too slow to download this much data. Even then it would cost twice as much as the Epic Edition.  Even the prior collections of DaoC are sold out across the UK and suppliers cant get more.

It would be great if Mythic would release the Epic Edition in the UK and Europe.

Thanks for trying to help :)

Have to agree with all the positive words. It is a great game :) For me it was a suprise too. Been playing SWG from the start and loved it - SOE destroyed it, and went over to Guild Wars untill I discovered this. I love it!

And one more thing: The community is great and all you developers and managers: THANK YOU :D

    www.camelot-europe.com <----GOA site.

I think you should ask GOA not Mythic because they are the "bosses" over Europe. i recomend playing on the US servers though, GOA has poor custumer support :( they are so 3 years ago :(

Been playing since DAOC came out and I still am intrigued by the game. When WoW came out a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and tried out it. About half the people from my guild bought the game when it came out. Only 2 people still play it, the rest (about 10) came back to DAOC. It was cool for a while, but DAOC just had more to offer in my opinion.
