I personally use the Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma (my fiance got it for me as a bday gift, along with the rest of the Chroma set), and I'm loving it. Granted, my headset before that was a mostly generic headset without the surround sound, so the Kraken was a huge improvement. I don't have much experience in gaming headsets, so I don't know of any others really. I'll be sure to check out ASTRO and see what that's about.
I like the GAMDIAS Hephaestus Almighty. It's light, more comfortable than any other I've tried (and I've tried a LOT), has a cooling system to keep your ears nice and comfy and sports a 'Blast Source Identifier' feature that is extremely functional and useful! Highly recommended!

As Kabaal mentioned, you might want to look into getting a separate headphone and mic. You'll typically get better quality at comparable prices that way.
I have the Creative Aurvana Live and Samson Go Mic. Very good for the price, these will put you back about $95 from Amazon. The mic is good enough to record music as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GEKRokf3IA, doubt a headset mic is of comparable quality.

I'm using a Razer 7.1 right now and I guess i'll just stick with it. I had a TRitton AX180, I liked that you could change the VOICE volume seperate from the GAME volume. I don't know why more headsets don't do this.
if you want an affordable yet good headset for PC gaming i recommend Logitech G430. Im very happy with mine, got it on sale for about $60. I dont pay more than $100 for headsets. I personally can only justify 3 digit price on full speaker systems, not headsets. If you dont care about the price then the other posters have good recommendations.
Looks like it's going to be a shellshocker on newegg at 3PM too!
I recently replaced that headset. The pads on the ears and head were falling apart and the mic intermittently stopped working. The sound was good. It also made me sweat after an hour or two of wear.
This time around I went with Sennheiser. So far so good.

I have went through so many headsets , the sound quality and looks are not what is important to me it's the COMFORT and being able to wear them for a long time. So i always go with Logitec G930's i have two pairs and love them. Great sound and Over the ear comfort.

I had a very similar headset by logitech, the G930. The sound would go out at random times, like the wireless would de-sync, and then re-sync. I tried so many things, checked forums, asked friends, and could not find a solution. I ended up replacing it and then the ear pads started falling off and the mic casing cracked (mic still worked). Seems to be a common theme here.
I did go wired recently, although I don't prefer wired and it doesn't have the features that the g930 and g35 have, the g430 has pretty good surround and apparently a better mic, according to the people that I chat with. I'll probably give the wireless industry a few more years to optimize their technology before dropping my wallet on a new headset.

If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
If your looking at just comms so teamspeak etc, just buy a cheap pair from steinheiser (sp) for say £25, but if your looking for game immersion then may i suggest you dont look at gaming headsets, but look at DJ headsets, then just use a 'loose' mic for any comms
This quandry i had myself about 9-12months ago, so on my weekly visit to scan got speaking to the regular guys behind the counter and he told me not to bother with any gaming headset, but use the money to buy a higher end DJ headset, and must admit EVERY penny i spent was worthwhile.
Important to note what he said after they had some 'burn in ' time. I personally didn't suffer from the early use syndrome.
But then just add a £3/4 mic that sits attaches to your top / sits on desk and trust me your gaming experience will grow
And before any 'gamers' jump on the "they aint gaming headsets" i would ask you to tell me what defines a gaming headset and in most cases the junk you have been fed is merely in the name and not the real quality, but i suppose until you try out something different then what you hear will always be the best

That's what I use right now. I've owned everything from $10 knock offs to $100 'Pro' and Logitech is always a safe bet. These are the first ones I have had to lower the volume on. I couldn't wind everything to 10 and forget it.

Your money would be much better spent on a good set of headphones and a clip-on mic.
'Gaming' headsets are a gimmick that tends to get you half the quality of non 'gaming' set ups.
Logitech G35. I love it. Great sound. Great comfort.

I've been very happy with my Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 320 Headset. It has a detachable Mic and a detachable cord, and it was a steal at $79. http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/pc-headsets/ear-force-recon-320/554
Logitech G930 is great.
