...got involved with EVE over World of Warcraft back in 2004. That's probably the only big thing I regret with my MMORPG decisions. It's best to know yourself, what kind of player you are (hardcore/casual), and why you play MMORPG's in first place.

Theme parks are not for me, I realized this these last few years. Sooner or later, eventually they will slow down with delivering the content required to continue playing the game, PvE focused games specifically where only at certain hours through the week you meet with your guild and kill/gank bosses that use the same mechanics over and over.

At least I won't repeat the same mistake twice. Eventually the next sandbox MMORPG that will come will understand economy and will give tools as well as freedom for its players to have a truly unique, individual experiences in a constantly changing, persistent world.

One thing is for sure though by 2017 I'll pick one sandbox MMORPG and stick to it by 2020 at least, regardless how bad it may be. Hopefully in 2020 I can be part of the next great UO/SWG/EVE type of great sandbox MMORPG and call it a home for the next 10-15 years. I'll never ever get myself involved again in a PvE centric, content dependent, casual MMORPG.

There is quite a few different sandboxs on the horizon. I'm not sure you will have to wait until 2020 or even 2017 although I can't vouch for the quality of games that I haven't played yet. It's great for us sandbox fans that the biggest games in development at the moment are claiming to be sandboxs and there are even more smaller ones. Not sure if EQN will be a sandbox or not (I think they may have retreated a bit from it) but the fact they atleast tried to claim it was at one at one stage is a good indication that they larger studios know we are out there. Hopefully Star Citizen in full will be out by then too. On the smaller scale, I'm looking forward to trying tree of life this month and there is more smaller games down the track. That and there are some pretty good sandbox games already.

You didn't just realise in the past few years that themeparks aren't for you, your tastes changed is all. Otherwise you wouldn't have played WoW since 2004.

As for picking a sandbox game and sticking with it no matter "how bad it may be" is a ridiculous statement and sounds more like you want to be one of the 'cool kids' than actually play something you enjoy.

To play one game to the exclusion of all others.... what a concept! I wonder if the DSM 5 has a label for this?

It's what I've decided to do, will be playing EVE exclusively from now on.  But I've always only played one MMORPG at a time, just not enough free time in my schedule to spread it out on multiple games.

To the OP, since you are thinking long term, out to 2020 and beyond, you definitely still have time to join and play EVE, it will likely still be going strong then and beyond.

    ^What these guys said.

You don't stick with something that long without enjoying it. Well, maybe the last couple of years because you had so much invested in it already. But definitely not the whole nine yards.

Sounds more like he's angry with Blizzard for not adding new content fast enough.

I only ever play one MMORPG at a time, and by that I mean I'll play that one MMO for a minimum of 3 to 4 months exclusively. If I really enjoy the game, that could stretch on indefinitely.

There's no way that I can play two or three MMO's concurrently at optimal efficiency. Remembering all the rules, lore, mechanics, keybindings, spell effects, combat moves and timing, etc., etc. is simply not possible for me.

I'm desperately searching and waiting for one sandbox MMORPG right now. Based on what I know so far I'm certain I won't be playing on any server older than 2 years on any MMORPG right now.

I've only ever played one MMORPG at a time, but a lot of that has to do with I'm not a dabbler in the genre.  I pick a game I like and stick with it.

Well keep in mind EVE is also casual, and if you want a more serious experience you could play pure PVP games for your PVP and great PVE games (like WOW) for your PVE.

With EvE you need to stay subbed for at least a year or so, just to get basic skills up. May as well sign up  now, space is not going to go away, and you don't need to catch up with vets, due to the way the game works.
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332

UO perhaps SWG have some merit but EVe?Eve offered zero tools,it is a one direction game focused on space pvp,imo you can't a more shallow game design and in an ugly space world.

The FIRST game to really offer variables was FFXI because it allowed the sub class system. With 22 classes that gives a ton load of CHOICE you could not nor can you do that now in any game. Then you had a lot of choice for weapons and armor and were allowed to macro them in/out during combat. Then you had lots of choice for USEFUL food.

Even the simple Ranger had tons of choice from various status arrows to type of arrows and type of Bows. Many games don't even use real arrows you just magically fire them like you have an unlimited supply, nor do you have to farm and craft them in other games either.

Point is that FFXI was the first game to really add depth into every system, still to this day i don't see it,developers are super lazy and cheap in their designs.

My gut feeling is you won't be finding any great mmorpg by 2017 not even 2020,the trend right now is cheap game design based on marketing gimmicks and unfinished early access releases. We are in a phase of the worst possible game design known since many years ago.So my prediction is you won't see another great mmorpg for at least 5+ likely 10 years before we phase around again.

Developers have some how found a way to make a lot of money with little effort by not competing with each other,so nobody is driving the market forward but more like backwards.

You'd rather play a bad sandbox game than a great PvE game?  Seems legit.  You're right on trend.

I never said I would play a "bad sandbox". If that was true I would've already been involved with one of the many sandbox MMORPG's out there. If I would ever choose to play a MMORPG though, especially one I would be spending $ on it would be a sandbox because I want to see more sandbox MMORPG's coming out not themeparks. Although, in the upcoming years I'll do my best to pick the best sandbox MMORPG from what's available and try really hard to enjoy it for what it offers.

I also don't think there is a "great" PvE themepark MMORPG out there and even if there was one coming soon it would most likely face the same destiny every other PvE MMORPG I can think of has faced, including WOW now. I recall what happened with the last new PvE themepark MMORPG I bought, it went F2P and eliminated the sub, 10 months after launch. Yes, I'm talking about DCUO, the MMORPG that almost nobody talks 3-4 years since launch, despite having one of the best IP one could ask for a MMORPG.

Yes, I would never play a bad sandbox MMORPG UNTIL 2017, but if the bad is really the only option I have by then (which by the way is a long time) then I'll gladly stick to it. Like I said you have to know what type of player you are and why you play MMORPG's.

Sounds like you're just stuck on the current sandbox bandwagon, willing to play that type of game no matter what.  No matter how bad it is?  I do know what kind of gamer I am:  One who seeks quality and a fun experience, not the flavor of the month at all costs.

Yes, I rather be on the sandbox bandwagon than on the game hopping bandwagon. I've already enjoyed fully almost every type of game that can be designed. Now it's just the same with better graphics. The sandbox MMORPG's are the only type of games that can offer me a different experience from the type I've already been through and done it.

EQN is slated by devs words "The biggest sandbox game ever made" But that depends if they can pull off the storybricks AI on their own. No one knows at this point if they could have pulled it off with or without their help. By DGC devs mouth, most of their game is RD so they can't even nail down when the game will release or what will work as intended. But if they pull it off, sandbox gamers should be very happy.
  • MightyUncleanMightyUnclean Member EpicPosts: 3,531

OK man, sounds like you've got your mind made up!  Good luck, I hope you find the game you've been waiting for.

Just don't make the mistake of sticking with a game just because you think it's the one or type you should be playing.  Sounds like you already made that mistake with WoW.

I can vouch for trying "tree of life", about the only mmo in the near future that I have any interest in whatsoever. Supposedly it hits early access at the end of the month.

I get my sandboxy itch out of my system playing the non-mmo Sims 2 (everything made after ts2 is pointless).  But to me "sandbox" means disgustingly large amount of control over environment / clothing / genetics.  With options to revise with Blender and other mesh altering art programs.  No I don't like 2nd Life - it's not a game it's a 3d chat room where you pimp yourself out thru an imaginary char.  So omg no.  Plus there's no breeding and genetics.  I want to see a 3d fancy come along with dragon genetics.

Since "sandbox" means do whatever you feel like doing and mod it as well kinda think it will just not happen in the DON'T BOT MY GAME current mmo attitude of this generation.

    Back to playing my themepark!
