I was looking at the Alienware Area-51

TheScavengerTheScavenger Member EpicPosts: 3,321

And when building it...

I can't seem to choose the video card. It has each one selected. But I want the bigger 4gb geforce, not the radeon 2gb. Does it come with ALL the graphics cards? It says its listed on the price for each section. When I try to select the geforce, it doesn't do anything. I can select all the other options, but can't seem to figure out the video card one.

Uncle is buying two alienwares, one for himself and one for me...no custom parts going on, so its take it or leave it and obviously I want a high end PC for free no matter what it is :P

Anyone know whats up with the alienware thing though? Does it randomly select a GPU to put in or can I tell them to put in the geforce?

Strange. I just tried internet explorer, in case one of my addons for firefox was causing issues.

But...each video card is still selected.

    http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-area51-r2/pd#overrides=

Am I in the wrong place? Site is rather confusing to be honest.

    I want to choose NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980 with 4GB GDDR5

But the AMD Radeon™ R9 270 with 2GB GDDR5 and the other two options are already marked in blue. It also says each option for video cards is already included in the price. What does that mean, does it include a whole bunch of GPUs or something?

I think it means the original configuration price includes the card you picked .They are not reducing the price it is within that price.

/sigh I wish I had an uncle like that. All my own uncles were deadbeats .

Well, maybe I'm just dumb. But when I go to select the Nvidia one, nothing changes. Each option looks like its already selected. Really confusing xD All 3 of my browsers do it, chrome, firefox and internet explorer. I even tried using my phone, and it did the same thing.

I want the nvidia one because it has more video ram and comes with witcher 3. But, dunno how to select that one.

    Confusing as hell website rofl.

I followed the link and it worked fine.

Are your browsers updated? Javascript plugin updated?  Otherwise, it's just user error. You should report yourself to your uncle and admit that you don't deserve nice things.

seriously why are u asking for help on  a MMORPG.COM forum about a DELL website? They have customer support for that, and those guys are super helpful when its a potential buyer. Contact customer support, that's what they r there for, and don't tell me their CS sucks when ur a potential buyer because I just spoke with them recently concerning a laptop and they helped me in under 10 minutes and made 3 followup calls to me to make sure I was satisfied and to update me on my order up until the day it arrived.

I figured it out. I was just being an idiot.

Each dropdown section is its own. So the 1600 dollar one, my uncle would have to spend an extra 100 to get the nvidia. For some reason, I thought the options going across were for the same thing to customize it...but each section is for its own configuration xD

I wanted a prebuilt system with a core i7, 16GB ram, GTX970. There were three desktops I saw that fit the bill. I chose the Acer Predator G3-605. This system has it and for less than the Alienware and about the same as the competing ASUS. Only this model has a 256GB SSD and a Blu-Ray reader. It has an external slide bay for a hdd. It fits everything I wanted and for a reasonable price and I didn't have to build it which I didn't want to do.

The weaknesses of the system are:

The motherboard is limited like most prebuilts. It only has 4 SATA slots. The case isn't very easy to work in. I added an SSD internally and it was a pain. It also came piled with a ton of crapware. It was annoying to clean it up.

If I didn't get this then I would have got the ASUS. The Alienware was too large, a lot more expensive, and didn't seem to have any advantage all plus I didn't like the huge case.

How is the power supply? I looked at the reviews and it was causing problems for some people. Do you have same experience?

I ended up just buying a GTX 970 for myself. It came with Witcher 3 for "free" (sorta kinda I guess) and I'm really happy.

Skyrim heavily modded sees 40-60 FPS, even with ENB SSAO+DOF on. I'd probably see better FPS if my PC had something else than an i5 660 rofl...that CPU is so old. Especially since Skyrim is pretty CPU intensive.

No crashes, in fact all my crashes are gone. So pretty much my 660 GTX 2gb was not nearly enough for modded Skyrim. I pretty much overkilled my 660 by trying to make Skyrim look good for screenshots :P

Skyrim looks WAY better now too, so I wasn't stuck with crappy settings that made the view distance look ugly. I can now do ugrids to 7 instead of 5, and that vastly improved things.

And I STILL get 40-60 FPS. On my 660 2gb card, I was only getting 20-30 rofl.

I tried various radeon cards my uncle had spares of. I think one was a newer, higher end one. It was a 280x? 290x? I'm not really sure to be honest, he put random cards in. But, they do NOT handle skyrim parallax textures well at all. I saw LESS FPS with those than my 660...without parallax (and just ENB), I did get 40-50 FPS (the 970 gets more)...as soon as I installed parallax mod...my FPS went to 5-10 FPS. And parallax makes the game look amazing and way more modern. I can't do flat textures anymore.

    I wasn't happy at all.

On top of that, that is ENB without ssao/DOF active...with those active my FPS was exactly the same as my 660, 20-30 FPS. Compared to the 970 that does all of that, and more, with 40-60 FPS.

I'm glad I got to test the radeon cards (I know it was either 280x or 290x one of those...but I tried various older ones too) since that been a big waste of money. Plus they aren't supported really by Witcher 3, my development version DID handle the 280/290x...I got 40-50 FPS on medium/high settings. But my GTX 970 plays it on near max settings.

As for the alienware. My uncle decided to build his own PC. He checked out that new alienware at Frys Electronics (they still had it for display at the one he went too) and it was way way too big. He said he can build a better, way higher end PC anyway himself. But that means I don't get a new PC :P

I did get a new GPU though :D But I had to buy it myself.

Im not a deadbeat uncle and there is no chance in hell i would buy my nephew an alienware.  Hell, i wouldnt buy myself an alienware.  Even though i can technically afford it, its a massive waste of money.

Then again ive been building my own gaming pc's for ~18 years so /shrug.

The Alienware Aurora is 20 kg as opposed to the hefty 28 kg this one is. I can barely lift the Aurora .One of the reasons I decided on the Aurora in the end. This one when I first saw it I thought wow it had the Nvdia 980 I think if I'm not mistaken and the Titan as an option for choice of card but that weight might just tip my table lol. It looked smaller in the pictures but when i saw the weight I realised it must actually be bigger than the Aurora.

Low resolution :P , Universal fix i like to joke around with for the 970 is get a old-school CRT, and u can crank textures as much as u want xD

Or the texture settings were set exactly so @1080p, that ram usage was 3.495gb

I should write to Jen-hsun and ask him to nominate me a 3.5GB junior advertising manager, i'll make him a sweet back to the past  90s style commercial (i wonder if u can stick Gsync in a top of the line 100-120hz CRT ???) :)

I would be willing to bet Asus could sell some CounterStrike guys a $2000 CRT Monitor that was 200hz and ran at 800x600 for maximum frameratery.

Almost certainly :), i don't think there's any pro cs player who uses a resolution higher than 1024x768, a huge number of them still use 640x480 still :)

Angry Joe has one. I love all the comments about how he should not be a sellout and so on. He seemed rather pleased with it but you can see the size of it in that video.
