Questions about weapon's DPS. Need EXPERT Plz

First of all I am a berserker and I use a hammer in my right hand and an axe for my left of course.  Recently a guild member bought me some Orange+ and red+ weapons and told me to go ahead and equip them.  I said ok b/c this guy seemed to know what he was talking about.  The weapons are good, but it seems that the weapons im getting from quests, which are lower level (blue and yellow), are better because they have a bonus and more effective DPS I guess because the quality is 100%.

Here is an example.  I need to know which ones to use.  Right now I have a blue hammer with 100% quality and 5% bonus of 2pts. hammer, 7pts strenght, and 8 pts hits.  It has a effective DPS of 5.4

My guild buddy bought me an orange hammer with 85% quality and no bonuses. The base DPS is 7.2, but the effective is the same as my blue hammer: 5.4 DPS

I am assuming that it is still best to go with my Blue hammer because It seems better to me because of the bonuses.  Is the "effective" DPS and armor factor always the best thing to go by?  And what is the difference between a 5% magic bonus and a 10% magic bonus?

Thanks for the help.  I cant find a good guide to this stuff online and no one from my guild is online right now.

The best bet is to go buy the effective DPS.  This is modifeid by quality and your level.  One reason why using a pruple weapon is usually not as good as using an orange weapon.  I am rather surprised that you have an 85% quality hammer but no bonus.  85% seems like droped loot and I assumed at this point in the game all droped loot had some bonus on it.

I would use the blue for now, but find an orange with a higher quality and some bonuses asap.

Armor absords damage.  The higher the magic bonus to your weapon the more damage can bypass the armor.  Armor also has a bonus and the higher the less damage you will take. This is assuming I remember this correctly.  Most people do not talk about it.

Lets just say the higher the number the better and it will affect your damage.

From what I can tell, and I've only been playing for about 3 weeks, is that 85% quality is usually bought and have no bonuses.  Dropped items seem to be anywhere from 95% to 100% and usually have some sort of bonus.

The 85% quality items are coming from drops in the old part of the game or drops from a long time ago.  The Droped items with bonuses I suspect you are getting from Catacombs and perhaps SI areas.  Crafted items range from 94%-100%.

That sounds right.  I'm still learning whats new and old in the game myself.  Thanks for your help.

Also, I know that using equipment that is higher level than you will wear the equipment down faster, but is there any kind of penalty for using equipment that is much lower level than you?

If you are a new player (and thus are very poor in terms of game economy) the best thing to do is spend lots of time in the adventure wings (instances) inside the dungeons.  There you will get something called Aurulite.  Then go to the catacombs city (Shar Labrynth - Hibernia, Kobold Undercity - Midgard and I actually can't remember the name of the Iconneau city under the aqueducts at the moment but there as well.  Once you have some aurulite banked up go to the city for whichever realm you are in and you can buy 96% quality items that have very nice bonuses.  They're not QUITE as good as player made but by using that instead of waiting for a crafter to be available to make you armor (and then find a SC'er to get it SC'd) you can have nearly PM quality gear fairly quickly.  This will get you into your 40's when you can do your epic quests.  After that then you can worry about getting player made gear.

Now, those who are wealthy are, obviously, better off getting player made gear but for the true new player Aurulite gear is the way to go.

When talking about  items ALWAYS go by the EFFECTIVE DPS.  After that go by whatever bonuses you get.

    Hope this helps.
