I'm getting tired of playing the same ol' themepark MMO. I've been wanting to play/review this game for a long time, but I keep hearing mixed reviews. I've gotten some of my answers on Twitter, and things like that, but I would like some more input on this.
I hear of all these awesome EvE stories, huge politics that happen. Betrayal and things of that nature. Does the game has some serious politics to it? I love that sort of thing, the drama, and watching everything unfold.
I've touched on the game before, and played it for a couple of days, but I couldn't really find something to hold unto. Are there things I can do to ease me into everything, or do I sort of drift into multiple things and see what I want to do?
Most importantly for the people who do respond to this and play the game... How do you enjoy Eve?

Well, what do the bad reviews say? Do they list the "bad things" in detail or are you listening to people bash the game with things like "it sucks". Any time someone ever says something like "it sucks" or "It's awesome" I completely discount that. Any time someone accompanies that with details that are actually worth something I only pay attention to the details.
What do the good things say? Are they all things that are positive, all things you want in a game that trump the bad "detail".
Or are you just listening to people say "it sucks/it's awesome"?
As far as politics "yes" it seems that is a huge deal in eve. But remember this is going to be actual drama politics. people actually being as bad as people can get in game form.
If that's for you and the good details trump the bad details then go for it.

Apologies for being unclear. Most of the time I read the negative things about the game, it has to do with a lot of downtime, and it's like reading spreadsheets instead of playing the game. I believe one review I read said he didn't find much interaction with other people. (I don't know if he joined a corp or not).
Some people say it's more of a chore than playing a game, but I see that as just being perspective. I guess I am more of trying to find different ways of how people enjoy the game, so I can in someway mimic that? Maybe that will help me to find what is best for me?

Well as a 8 year (bitter) vet.
What keeps me in game...
social, nothing more, I have lived in the game (literally over a big 4 year period a few years back) I have done the 2000 man fights, i have played the small gorilla warfare pirate style fights.
There are very few aspects of the game that i haven't tried, for me in any mmo i love the crafting / industry in game. And eve is definatly no different.
My current day consists of the follow
Log in check any production jobs completed
Buy more blueprints
Make more ships / mods
Sell all my wares at highest price
Rinse and repeat
now this might seem a very clicky, tedious thing, but to give you an example , I spend maybe 5 minutes in every hour doing something in game, the rest of the time I am chatting away, socialising, chilling, on this forum (and many others)
Eve for me is the perfect game it means i can play other games, I once read on a forum (or might have been a players bio) eve is 23hours 50 minutes of boredom inter-laced with 10 minutes of pure MMO joy.
^^this is the way to explain it, however, that does the game injustice, because how you fill the 23h 50m is your choice, and this is where the sandbox comes from, People can suggest you do things like mission/pvp/mine/scam/rob/market/trader but you need to find what makes you tick with eve.
EvE when you first play might scare the bejuses out of you, however, todays new player experience is so friendly compared to my early day, by end of it you should have basic idea what you want that is where you ideally then find a player corp and they will help yo get your goals (as well as you helping them reach theirs)
Dont think that EvE is like a lot of people (on this forum and most have never played it) suggest in that its full of scum, yes a few bad apples, but in all honesty the crowd of players is generally a friendly (if not slightly distrustfull) bunch of guys.
As i have said in other posts, if its a game you wanna sample see my bio below this post, then if you do decide to take the game for more than the bog-standard 21 days a few iskies will reach you from my pocket

Yeah, that's exactly what I was talking about and I agree with your thought that it is perspective.
There's a lot of info in eve and a lot of menus. Someone not engaged in that info and who just wants to get in game and "pew pew" might be the type to say "spreadsheets". Someone who is engaged in that info might say something entirely different.
And as you said, someone indicated that he didn't have any interaction and you didn't know if he joined a corp. My guess is he either didn't join a corp or joined one but never made the effort.
I played EVE for a very small bit and I realized it was the type of game that would suck up all my time. Well, me knowing "me".

Politics are important, they determine who owns what space. Generally there are long periods of napfests where the big sov-holding entities aren't fighting each other punctuated by times of conflict.
Give various isk making methods a shot during this trial, but once you find one you can tolerate stick with that for skill training rather than spread yourself out. Everyone needs to find a corp quickly because chatting with others is what makes grinding isk bearable.
If you got a 3 week trial code from someone, it makes a plex when you subscribe with cash, so get your fair share.
My take on this as a 10 year old veteran.
When I first entered the game I tried to do alot of stuff solo for the first month looking to find a good way of making ingame-money. It was very tedious however, as you can't skill up any faster due to the fixed rate of skillpoint accumulation.
And this is the very first thing you need to really know about EvE Online... no matter how much time you spend in the game, you can't skill up any faster due to the fixed skillpoints per hour system.
After the first month I was on the edge of quitting the game, as I couldn't progress as fast as I wanted to, still being stuck with my badly fit frigates and cruisers.
I was a little fortunate tho, that a guy started chatting with me talking about his corporation and what they do as a team, even with those badly fit frigates and cruisers.
I was thrilled to hear about being able to do all the stuff he was talking about, so I joined his corp and suddenly the game got hundred times better.
The key to enjoy EvE Online is joining a corporation, as that opens up alot of options you won't get as a single player, especially when you've just started to play. It doesn't matter that you don't have alot of skillpoints in a corp, as even a low skillpoint player can have a great impact with his cheap frigate.
Use your time to get to know about the game-mechanics, as they're crucial in this game. And the sooner you accept these mechanics the sooner you'll be at ease with them.
This game is very unforgiving. If you get blown up, you'll loose your ship, your equipped items and your cargo.
Use your solo-time to generate ingame-money. Allthough there's plenty of ways to generate money, the best way for beginners is to simply fly missions, as it only requires the basic combat skills to train up and you'll see actual progression there.
Exploration is a good way to go for a solo-activity aswell, but it requires a set of skills that doesn't help you anywhere else, so character-advancement will be very slow for the combat-activities in the game.
Mining and crafting are suited to groups. Trying to start out as a miner or crafter to generate money is not a good option. I would actually go as far and say that these two activities, aswell as trading are not a good option for a player with a single account at all. Usually we have second account for these tasks.
As for the politics and the drama. Yes, there's plenty of it in this game. However, it won't actually affect you very much, if you don't join a corporation that is operating in the playercontrolled territories aka nullsec.
Nullsec is where the alliances control the space and the ressources, build stations and manufacture the biggest ships. That's also the space where you can freely attack another player without being punished by the game-mechanics for doing so.
Be advised tho, that you can generally attack and be attacked everywhere in the game. Only the consequences differ between the three different security-settings.
So yeah, if you are interested, than get a trial-account and see, if the game might be for you, but keep in mind that you need to join a corp to see it's full potential.
I agree with part of this, its important to players from other MMO to realies that you can spend 24 hours in game but it will still take 5days to train that skill to level 5
EvE is probably one (if not the) most friendly game to adults, people who work etc, you know the guys who cannot spend 24/7/365 grinding etc.. as your skills continue to train whilst your not in game, come back to game after 3 days away and you have 75000 more skill points than when you last played
However, I dont agree fully with the find a corp
I woudl say find a network of players, for last 6 years i have pretty much lived solo in my own corp, with only my odd r/l friend dropping into corp for a month or so etc 
however, on flip side i woudl always recommend joining something like "EvE University" they will teach you at a nice steady pace the full game mechanics in all parts of the game, but also a lot of guys who you will fly with are probably in the same level of experience as you with the game, these will be the guys who you will either be shooting or flying with for the next 6 years
The last bit i fully agree with, get to know the mechanics, EvE is NOT about bushing (or button mashing) you need to know how your speed of transversal will have an impact on your damage, but also the impact it has on the incomming damage not just a case of stand still and shoot
, this goes for all parts of the game, if you like theory crafting in games, this is definatly the game for you
