What is the true 101 difference between both type of servers? Is one better than the other or
is one more simplified? Where do you benefit the most as a new player and are you going to
be missing out on alot of game if you go to one over the other?
I started on the Classic server and love it over there on the Gareth Server, however I have
online friends that are new as well and are being persuaded to go to the Normal Server due
to Trials of Atlantis.
One finally question also, are charcter types balanced the same way in Classic over Normal
servers? Or are we actuallly comparing apples and oranges now?
Thanks!

The Classes on classic are the same as the normal servers. There is no difference in balancing or power. Game balance (at least for now) is based on the normal servers.
ToA adds in a huge amount of content and new abilities. The abilities you get are from completing master levels and abilities you can get from artifacts.
If you like a lot of PvE content then I would say that the normal servers are best. If, at level 50, you would rather be done with it, then go for classic.
Personally, my issue with ToA has always been implementation. The information released prior to it comeing out made the expansion seem far different than it was (and currently is). For me, the expansion is playable. It is not an expansion I like (I really hate raid content and the grind of the expansion), but the changes made recently will enable most players to enjoy the content. ToA is far quicker to do now.
If I had been making the decision I would much rather they never released the Classic servers and instead pushed the last few patches live quicker. That would have solved most people's problems. Many players have already come back from the Classic servers. Shortly after release at peak times there were around 8000 players on the Classic servers. The number now is more around 4000.
The only advantage you have as a new player and starting on the Classic servers is that it will be somewhat easier to find groups. It will just take longer to be able to group on the regular servers at low levels. Also, until you have done some ToA, being truly competitive in NF will be difficult.
I think the decision you need to make is would you rather play with those friends or not? If you do then go play with them. If not and you like where you are at then stay there. I do not think there is much advantage of playing one server type versus another.
Thanks so much Julian for the information you supplied me. So what your saying is that we will
be able to do more content on Normal Server rather than a Classic Server.
This is great information for me to know!
The reason behind the whole post was that me and a few online friends decided to try out DAoC.
As I checked it out 1st, I was trully impressed! And went to the Classic Server because alot of ppl
said it would be easier for newbs like me to start on that type of server.
Maybe after putting a month in DAoC and having the highest toon of LvL 25 Pally, wont hurt to
jump over to another server and start fresh with my friends.
We intend to put together a little thing together where we meet on Vent.
Any tips of what types of classes are best to use amoung 5 friends? I know healer is a important
one whether cleric or heretic. Whats the biggest dps'er class and what caster has the highest
damage output that the group could benefit from either pve and rvr amoung 5 friends?
Thanks!
With 5 people you can pretty much do anything you want. Sounds like you are playing an Alb. I do not play them so someone else might know what would be better, but here is what I suggest.
1. Paladin for End regen, or Mercenary as a backup tank
2. 1 tank, probably an Armsman. You need someone with lots of hits to keep agro
3. 1 Cleric
4. 1 Caster, probably an Ice Wizzard. They have PbAoE which is the best damage spell you will have as an Alb. The strategy is to pull to have the Armsman pull to a central area with Wizzard and then you spam PbAoE until the target is dead.
5. 1 Caster - Air Theurgist. You get pet spam and AoE mez. Or you might swtich this out for a minstral
Casters do the most damage in the game. The class that does the most amount of damage is the Warlock, but you will need to play Mid.
If you would rather play Hib then I would suggest:
1. 1 Champ, Warden, or Hero (or you can not have a tank and go with a Mentalist - mana)
2. 1 Animist - verd
3. 1 Animist - arb
4. 1 Enchanter - mana
5. 1 Bard - nurture
The tank does not matter that much. He will act either as a puller or simply to get argo off of the casters. The animists will shroom and area causing most of the mobs to start taking massive damage and dying. The enchanter can PbAoE killing them quicker. The Bard will play power song to reduce down time, buff up the pets, and heal/rez when necessary.
If you have the Enchanter pet pull, you could replace the tank with either a mentalist or a druid. A mentalist will have crack which will reduce downtime because power will regen faster. You also have a heal over time, a heal, and a great AoE DoT to cast. If you go for a druid then you can have someone to buff you and the pets as well as make sure the pets are healed.
Or you could swap out the Enchanter for a Bainshee or a Mentalist. A Bainshee causes a lot of damage, but not as much as the Enchanter. More useful in RvR than PvE but still a good choice. A Mentalist can provide you with crack which is always nice.
With the last patch that was implemented the Warlock class is not the highest damage dealer. The Bainshee is the new Flavor of the Month now and there are hundreds of players rushing their Bainshee leveling so they could get them out to RvR and cause serious damage. The Bainshee class is so overpowered that it's not even funny. Mythic is looking into the concerns the players have but I think it will take a few more months of complaining for them to do anything. At least they supposedly fixed the line of sight issues with them.
Getting back to the original question, if you want to solo, the classic servers are indeed a better fit for you. In my opinion, the majority of people went over to the Classic servers not because of the grind of Trials of Atlantis but because of how overpowered it makes your character. A high realm rank player that is totally decked out in Atlantis armor and has completed Master Level 10 can annihilate other players in a matter of a couple of seconds as opposed to just a high ranking player with regular armor. The bonuses to casting speed and damage make a HUGE difference. Basically people got sick and tired of not even having a chance to win a battle most of the times if they got jumped first.
As far as the 5 people list goes, it looks good except for the fact that Paladins ARE tanks and do fit that role. People hardly play Armsmen anymore due to the lack of decent ranged skills. (Their short bow damage is ridiculous and has one good use, pulling mobs but there are much better ways of pulling with other classes). Also, for PvE you're better off with an Earth Theurge. The Wind Theurgists are primarily used for RvR. The Armsman can be substituted for a sorcerer who is the best albion crowd control character in the game and also has mana regen spells which always help out even if you have font of power.
The issue with Bainshee's always has and always will be the LOS issue. They are not overpowered and this nerf unfortunatly weakend them and failed to address the real problem. The best damage you can get for more than one person will still be a PbAoE.
Warlocks still have a higher DPS, at least towards single targets.
