Hi, trying to find an MMO with the following requirements:

  • Mature/Community MMO.
  • Rich lore.
  • Immersive story-line.
  • Non-fantasy.
  • Sci-Fi or possibly contemporary.
  • A non-toxic community.

Bottom-line; In my 30s looking for an MMO that's non-fantasy, and hopefully has a partial adult/mature community.

I think, with those parameters you'd love TSW's roleplay community. One of the best storylines, very rich lore, modern (present days) setting, and a great community - I still favors LotRO as the best community out there, but TSW's is a close second.

I haven't played LotRO, so I can't comment on that one, but I'll definitely second TSW's community as a whole. Granted I also play on Arcadia, so maybe it's just the RP community, but the forums are also generally a nice and civilized place with helpful people - which leads me to believe the game as a whole is pretty well off when it comes to the quality of its players.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

On first impulse I would say Age of Conan but it's fantasy and the community.. well I got ganked so often that I never got beyond level 50 before ragequtting again.

Second Life has some custom MMOs in it afaik.

Hmm Scarlet Blade is like steampunk anime - imagine it like female Terminators running around. The community is more mature than you may think.. at least it was like that last time I played.

Agree, just edited out for the answer's sake: nope, that's not just the RP community :)

TSW has single server tech, so the nice, civilised chat and in-game behaviour, and the helpful folks everywhere are the entire community, not just Arcadia.

It's a great bunch overall, even if you see the occasional dude in Agartha dancing in his underpants :)

(edit: maybe I lean over to LotRO only because I know those fellows much longer, TSW is only 3 years old)

Will read up and check out both, thank you!

I've seen some videos of TSW at some point and wondering is it "tab" based targeting? Not that this is a deal breaker or matters, it just popped into my mind.

This is really my fault as I used the word adult, maybe mature or another word would have been more appropriate, only myself to blame here.

AoC was great fun until people started moving on.

Second Life and Scarlet Blade, I mean no offense but they're definitely not my cup of tea and wouldn't even consider playing them.

LotRO is really appealing as far as lore and setting goes imho, was just hoping to see another setting... but nonetheless very appealing.

Thankyou for the replies and help.

It has both. Default is tab-target, but even that case you need positioning and watch for the facing (plenty of cone AoE skills in the repertoire).

The other option is the shooter mode, it can be useful if you're a ranged player or kiting a lot. That way you have a crosshair on the screen and you target with the mouse.

edit: mmorpg.com had a dev video when it was added to the game, you can check it at https://youtu.be/TzS03uQmkuI?t=5m54s

The visuals for Firefall looks great, although this reminds me a bit more of Planetside 2 than an MMO with a great story-line. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Thanks Po_gg. I guess I kinda prefer tab targeting in MMOs and a crosshair in shooters, that's why I was curious. Cool that they have both. A pretty big download that TSW.

You're looking for either SWTOR or TSW. AoC could fit too.

Will check out SWTOR too. Thanks.

Yep, it's cool that both are in-game, and of course at the video it was still in progress, the actual implementation is not that clunky :) you can switch between the two modes with a simple key press any time.

TSW is at around 46-47 Gb (though I have tons of screenshots in it so maybe just 45), TOR's client is less than 30 Gb. It's a nice candidate too, except the community has more youngsters - I'm not saying toxic, but sometimes it's better to simply switch off the chat :)

Also, I don't know if it's still frequent, but turn down ninja invites, back in the days that was a common usage for ganking (on PvE servers you only can attack pvp-flagged players, and grouping could flag you if the group leader was on pvp...). When I last played there wasn't any, so maybe it's fixed.

edit: when you're in TSW, type /chat join Sanctuary in the chat window, that's a user channel created for helping new players, if you have any questions or need help just drop it there, you can find at least a couple players on that channel any time.

    Don't laugh, but consider EVE.

No, seriously, while there can be great evil it is countered by a large community of adult players.

I've had friends that tried to get me into Eve but I sort of past. It seems that you really have to invest yourself hardcore to get somewhere. Last I heard they had multiple accounts and they said it takes 6+months to really get into or more. I'm really looking for something with a good story too, even though Eve looks awesome.

This is just a small thanks to all the replies follow up.

I ended up trying SW:TOR, LotRO, and TSW just to try to get the feel. I'm not saying that this represents the whole game, it's really just a sample.

    1. In SW:TOR I started an Agent... and the environment, atmosphere, and story so far was excellent, had a really great time, and of course it's Sci-Fi!
    2. In LotRO I started a Ministrel... even though it's fantasy it's Tolkien IP so all is forgiven. LotRO seems to be a bit more exploration, running around, and classical questing in beautiful settings. Getting yourself killed feels to have a bit more weight somehow, and running is a valid option. Really friendly global chat.
    3. In TSW I started as well, no class at all... The cut scenes/voice acting is excellent. Atmosphere is great. Monsters are 0  challenge so far and more like place holder zombies. My two first investigation missions took... hours... but they were very rewarding without looking up the answer.
I'm not ruling out any of the above MMOs... but I'm going to go with TSW for now because of the setting and different kind of questing.

Thanks again to all for the help.

    1. Agent has one of the best storyline among classes, nice pick.

    2. LotRO Really friendly global chat. told ya image

    3. That's because of the latest change, when they lowered the mob difficulty for the "base" area (Solomon, Egypt and Trans), so players could focus onto the story and the missions more. The dungeons are still tough, and even in the open a few bosses, or a larger swarm / wrong pull are still able to defeat you, especially on the later zones :)

Investigation missions without looking a walkthrough, that's maybe the best part of TSW. If you play that way, you'll have great fun during the game, some of those missions are really challenging. A hint, you'll get 1200 bonus points from the box (after you complete 30 missions), unless you really want some cosmetics to the character I'd suggest to buy Issue #9 from those points. Tokyo access is free, but you can't play the missions if you don't have Issue #9 and the story is great there.

Have fun in the games! :)
