What's Improved?

Noyou12Noyou12 Member UncommonPosts: 23

I've been playing a fair amount of both WoW and archeage lately, the former has well lost its charm and the imminent merges for Archeage have taxed my motivation.

I've played the majority of MMORPGs at some time or other, and I'm wondering if any of them have improved significantly and are worth checking out again now?

I'm only really interested in fantasy games, and the only other requirement is that there be no 'essential' quests - i.e. quest chains that must be completed in order to progress beyond the tutorial.

Final fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn comes to mind if you didn't try it after the update. It's likely one of the best MMORPGs out there right now if you're looking for scale, exploration, beautiful graphics and don't mind traditional tab target combat.

I personally don't like what Square did to FFXI but to the average gamer that likes the usual mmorpg game design,FFXI has improved a megaton.

I can't even explain all the changes without writing an essay. If you happened to pop into FFXI in it's vanilla form you won't have a clue to what is going on now.

The good side is that even if you don't like the typical end game gear grinds,FFXI has a lot of gaming in it for you.You can solo or group it's all up to you, there are 22 classes that can be leveled all on the same player,no reason for alts. The game offers up to 3 npc's to help you soloing,i believe talk is soon to be able to use 4.You can also level up "starts at level 30 but does sync down to 5" a npc fellow companion to give you one more npc that can also be changed into a tank dps or healer role.

You  can even play as the mobs in the game  and level them up as well just for a change in pace. The game even offers an easy way to get some decent max level gear without getting into the end game nonsense.

Tons and tons of new added xp methods from rings,to books,to Sparks and yes  kill chains add to that as well.

As to quests or better i say the missions side of the story,Square removed the level cap from most if not all of it,so you can still do the story line if you wanted without having to force a large group. They have also added a ton of new storage space from vanilla FFXI,so now there is lots of room for pack rats.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I did buy FFXI back in the day, but it wouldn't work for some reason or other, so that is one game I never managed to play - I believe it was something to do with me being in NZ and it refusing to connect. I'm not sure it'll work now, but it might be worth a shot.

On FFXIV (ARR) - The last I played it the main story was well-woven into progress and it (felt like it was) very much compulsory - is this not the case for the upcoming expansion? I have a level 49 character - I gave up around there a few weeks after release and tried it again recently to find out not much had changed. I know there's a lot of hype there, but FFXIV isn't a game for me personally.

I think the op should try this too....but please do not put exploration in the same sentence as FFXIV. The zones are as big as my guest bathroom.

Imminent merges for ArcheAge - nope.

I guess 6 months is imminent to some folks

There are not even server transfers in at this time heh.

Do you have no boundaries when it comes to defending AA? Yes, knowing something you do not want WILL be happening in 6 months can tarnish how someone feels about a game today. Why would that be so difficult to grasp for you?

It's a bit more complicated than I made it out to be, but suffice it to say I rerolled on a dead server on purpose, hit max, farmed up a bunch of gold and now I may as well play my main.

6 months may seem like awhile, but that's a pretty typical timeframe for MMOs anyway - "Soon" - Either way, I've been burned in the past (Flashy Racing Kit released a couple weeks after I traded 20 or so apex for a couple trees - not that I bought them with money, mind) - but the temptation to play again was too much. As great as the game is, the way Trion handles it is arbitrary to say the least. The amount of effort & RNG it takes to be competitive in Archeage is tremendous, and with the ("not merges") PvP will be back in droves, something I had hoped to avoid. Nevermind none of my typical friends are ever likely to play again.

Anyway, I was thinking of games like GW2, Aion, that kind of jazz - stuff that's been around for awhile that I've been out of the loop on.
