A Question To Higher Level Beta Testers

Well, I've played around in the pre-order beta testing here for about half a week now, but have created various characters of almost all classes to get a feel for each one...  My highest character right now is my Halfling Rogue - which I enjoy immensely.  My question is for Rogues/Rangers who have made it up there in the levels.

I am interested in making a Rogue/Ranger once the servers go live.  I'd like to have the Rogue's lockpicking/trap disarming abilities, their combined evasion and searching abilities, and the ranger's archery skills.  I'm thinking of doing: 4 Rogue/6 Ranger, as in the PnP rules that would give me the first bonus to Evasion as a Rogue, and give me the Ranger's companion pet at 6.  I'm interested if any beta testers out there have gotten a Ranger as high as level 6 - and if so, do they still get the companion pet at that level?  Do they still get their second path mastery (Archery vs 2 Weapon) at level 6 as well?  Rogues that are 4+ - is that a good level to cut them off (do they still get the second evasion bonus at 4)?  Anyone who has had extensive experience in these two classes, please let me know your thoughts, so I know just where to draw the line with their levels.  Thanks!

I got Zeliar the Fish, my rogue, to 4 yesterday. I only got one new feat, I think it was one that lets the rogue suffer no damage on a successful reflex save.

I did a level 7.. ( I think it was 7, it was the RedWillow quest, with CR 9 giants) and was able to disarm the traps with a 75% success rate. Zeliar has 14 int and has the +4 disable enhancment, as well as the skil maxed out.

I think a better template is to go Rogue/Ranger 8/2 since you won't be that good at disabling traps at level 10. I would start with the rogue at 1 and then do the 2 ranger levels.

If you just want to be a ranger I'd go ranger 10 since rogue is not that useful if you don't keep up the skills.

He's asking for a high levels opinion, level 4 is still low level.  I'm sure he appreciates the comments tho.  And your comment on the 8/2 split is dead on track, good suggestion there.

I'll explain this as best i can sainted.  The way the devs did the game with the rolls, etc for spotting, searching and disable.  4 levels in rogue is going to be useless in level 10 dungeons.  The way the devs set up the rolls in the tougher content its as if they expect the rogue to not only be the correct level, but also have all the AP's possible into the skills, as well as having equipment that gives bonuses.  I've seen failure's on rolls as high as 47 for example...

If you want to be an effective rogue, you'll not want to take more then 2 levels of something else.

Also its worth mentioning that multiclassing in this game is painful period from an AP stand point because you won't get the better ones that way.  You'll have the AP's at level 10 of a level 4 rogue or a level 6 ranger which are far less powerful then a level 10 of just one of them.  And you also gain no extra slots for AP's when you dualclass or multi class.

In short, multiclassing rarely pays off in DDO, its typically a good way to gimp yourself badly.  The few instances it does pay off typically you only are taking a level or two of something else besides your focus and no more.  There is one exception to this I can think of but thats certainly not the norm.

At high levels, 4 levels of rogue will be useless. The dungeon trap checks are set to the character levels, so a lv 10 dungeon will need a lv 10 rogue with max skill points (and enhancements, or maybe lv 9 with items + enhancements).

There are no pets for rangers. Testers have been ranting for Pets for rangers since alpha 0, I gave up after beta 2 since the devs never responded to any of the ranger class discussions.

I know I can be a little dense at times...image  So....

I have seen people talking about multiclasses, and I do know about this...  But what confuses me is this...

I have seen the level 4 Rogue/level 6 Ranger discussion.  And I have not played up to high levels in DDO.  And I know that there is a level cap of 10.  But...  Does that mean that you can have only a Total of 10 levels?  Could you have a multiclass lvl 4 Rogue/level 10 Ranger?  In other words, can you have more than 10 levels total?  (like the example above, total of 14 levels, 4 rogue and 10 Ranger levels)

You can have 10 character levels spread out between a max of 3 classes.

    6/4 = yes
    3/3/4 = yes
    5/5/5 = no
    10/1 = no

You ARE a little dense since nobody mention a 4/10 split ! image Hahaha

The limit at release is 10 levels total ( as in sum of), and 3 classes max. So any of these combinations work: 4/3/3, 8/2, 5/5, 6/4, 8/1/1, 10, etc.
