ARK: Survival Evolved: Friday's Big Update Detailed in New Steam Hub Post

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The ARK: Survival Evolved team has updated its Steam portal page with the contents of this Friday's big patch.

Along with the emphasis on bug fixes and performance optimizations, players can expect to see these new features added:

  • Tribe Governance features: do you want to be full utopian Communist where everything is shared, rapacious Capitalists with absolute private property, or something in between? Now Tribe founders can choose!

  • New Structures: The Metallic Spike Blockade for stopping incoming Dinosaur attacks, and the Food Storage Bin for preserving your food over extended periods of time and turning beef into jerky... mmmm beef jerky!

  • Flyers can now carry other dinosaurs, not just humans. C4-Packing Dodo Air Drop anyone?

Read the full post on the ARK: Survival Evolved Steam page.

Keybindings will not stay where you put them nor work most of the time.

I use arrows to move (Fine) and Num0 to Jump. Settings say Num0 as I set it and save but does not work in game. Any other way to get the controls to work the way I want and not dictated for me? Thanks

C-4 packed Dodo's?!!? This is really worth looking into now. Forget about all the other fancy features. It's all about the Dodo's!

I'm kind of confused as to where this game even came from. I can't remember any hype whatsoever, it's an unknown team, and it had a lot of content and polish for being a random early access survival game on the unreal 4 engine. It also blew up really fast on steam with like 80k concurrent users. That's insane.

I'm wondering the same too. Suddenly articles about this game pop up here and there. Considering 400k early access has been sold, generating a revenue of $10m while costing $1.5m, this game is a major success. The fact they are doing it with little or no advertising/hype is a wonder.

    Kudos to them.

It released a trailer like a month and a half ago that appeared to be amazing. Went on steam store (early access) with a release date of June 2, 2015. It was kind of out of nowhere, but hype generated real quick among sandbox and survival genre enthusiasts.

It did not live up to the hype in my opinion.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

That and this isn't the typical steam early access cash grab. the developers have been super active, pushing out multiple patches daily, depending on the severity of the issue. major bugs get quashed quickly.  Even in its current state it's worth the $25 I paid.

i do not understand really mmorpg.com stories and articles. This is not a mmorpg though i play it myself but there is ZERO coverage at all with 7 days to die and it is exactly the same as this game basically with servers and survival. If you guys are going to cover stories for non mmos at least be fair about it and cover all of them. This game has a lot less polish than most of the other survival games in the genre.

Did 7 days to die dig into their wallets?  Advertising doesn't come cheap.

    Got to pay the piper.

Well i guess it is a combo of not paying for advertising and the fact that nobody really cares about 7 days to die.

Lost with dinos otoh is the new hot commodity. Rideable dinos i might add.... And not a freaking zombie in sight...

Arc is the new hot and will be so for about 5 days...

This have been a good conversation

Yes they do.  Bought this on a whim and so glad I did,  Devs are amazing with their feedback and updates.  Let's hope they pull off the performance gains suggested in tomorrows patch.

Ended up buying it after reading into it. Really actually enjoying it so far. A little buggy and some dinosaurs AI is broken as hell, like when you dismount a Pterodactyl and it isn't on follow but it decides to walk a million miles away.  Other than a few bugs it's super fun, ended up playing it for like 4 hours straight, and I never do that with survival games.

Flavor of the week? It's bigger than that.. play it and find out for yourself! 800 years of gameplay already from 500000 users... :)

It blew up because its not just the same played out survival game.  Theres actually more to it.  Imagine if someone took that sort of idea and made an MMO out of it.  Oh wait, that realism in an MMO is just considered grindy and bad.

Structire placement needs tweaking badly, spawning into hostile dino feedimg frenzy needs fix, and i need more time in a day to play. Pretty decent so far, thumbs up wiggle

I have a pack of 12 dodos, ranging from level 33 to 59.  I would've never thought to strap C4 to them....but now that you mention it, I could rule the world :D

I love this game.  I haven't really spent my time playing anything else.  It's very fun with friends and especially if you can get on a private, reliable server :D

Look I appreciate  mmorpg picking a survival game and really writing it up, but what about a real MMO like "tree of life" nothing what so ever? dino's are nice but a real mmo is nicer

I've literally never bought an EA game on Steam, as I've leaned towards disgust with how a lot of devs take advantage of EA to get a quick injection of cash and do little to nothing to improve their game. That said, I bought this game and have enjoyed what I've played so far. It's a beautiful game if your computer can have it maxed out like mine, and the survival aspect is satisfying as you learn to gear up and create faster and faster with each death.

tdlr: Get this game if a survival game with dinosaurs that you tame, and diverse enemies that make you constantly look not just around, but look to the sky as well, sounds at all interesting to you. The devs seems to actually care about the future of this title and are actually willing to listen to the community.

Everyone, please remember that this game just came out on Steam as an Early Access which means it's in pre-alpha or beta. It just came out on Steam on June 2nd, 2015. For how long it has been going and for being early access, this game shows a huge amount of potential and of course there are going to be plenty of bugs, it isn't a full release yet so cut it some slack!

From what I have seen from other pre-alpha/beta/early release games, this game is a hundred miles ahead of the game! GREAT GAME, GREAT DEVELOPERS, AND ALMOST DAILY UPDATES! I've never seen a game that has been this on the ball!

Just because a game isnt hyped here doesnt mean much. This site doesnt hype games you can actually play (early release or otherwise) they hype ponzi scheme kickstarters that never start but certainly like to have money kicked to them. I play two games right now that dont even have their own section here...This one, ARK, and Ascent. Both playable games that you can buy on steam for peanuts.  Both with sand boxey feel to them.

But there isnt really any mention of them here at all. I think the huge number of people who bought ARK basically 'forced' this place to at least start talking about it. Ascent is a long way from being 'modern' but it serves a purpose and its only one guy doing it so that has to be considered. Ark looks like (better than some) Triple A MMO that used to get hyped to high heaven and then crash and burn, the fact this game (ARK) isnt  getting hyped here or anywhere else is probably a blessing.

Two major patches the past two days (today patch bigger than one in this article) shows theyre heading in right direction. Once they get it optimized so mid level machines can play it then they should really take off with other fixes and additions.

I have played for 5 or 6 days had only a couple bugs here or there, no more than some fully released games have actually. Only had one, maybe two crashes and that was day one with a memory leak which seems to have been fixed in one of the first patches I saw.

I also dont label it a survival game. Its sort of a sand box without quests but you have decay on everything. Which is what a lot more MMOs should do. Right now the main focus is to level up, learn stuff and if youre on a PvP server go and kill other people. 70 people pop caps makes having organized stuff difficult and the mega guilds certainly will balk at it, but 10-15 guys (assuming they can get on together) can do some damage. Some talk of raising limits but even with that the most I saw bandied about was maybe 200. Which for some is still small.

I stay away from PvP servers anyway, griefer heaven, but thats another beauty, you can level up on a PvE server then transfer ro any server you want (at any time). Although that feature is a little buggy still.

So they seem to take what the players say and give it to them, within reason anyway.
