[Review] Heroes of the Storm: Smash Bros. Meets MOBA

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Like World of Warcraft, Heroes of the Storm has been derided for dumbing things down, but the reality is that Heroes makes MOBA more accessible while also preserving what makes the genre fun.

I was discussing what this game is with my friends the other day.  We all decided that it was basically DOTA-lite for when you don't feel like losing a DOTA and throwing a shit fit nerd rage.  Simple, fast, and relatively fun, just lacking most of the depth and competitiveness of other MOBA's.

Well I don't think the game is going to get out as much as they're putting into it, ads all over the place and they had a tourney on ESPN.  I can't see it actually catching as has been said a million times it's just a dumbed down version of popular MOBAs, this won't be the WoW of MOBAs as far as popularity goes because they're already too late.  Infinite Crisis should be a good example and probably Sins of a Dark Age soon eough.

It's really fun and Accessible when you queue solo and get matched against 5man premade with skype. real fun.

Really? Apparently you have never seen tournament  level play for Smash Brothers, its far more dynamic and complicated than SF and MK, if you don't believe me, lets play some matches.

Seriously, especially if we are talking about Melee or Project M.

A mediocre Melee player that knows how to L-cancel and Wave Dash/Wave Land will smash any person that thinks they are good because they "play with their friends."

But I do not agree that smash is more complicated then SF or MK, its just different.

Well lol was dumbed down version of sota, this is the same thing. Issue with dota is that is imbalanced as shit. There are too many face roll heroes that stomp pubs all they way to 5k.  Unless you are playing 5 man stack dota is shit beyond belief.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

    I said I wouldn't play it .... I changed my mind.

I didn't think I could play a MOBA, but HoTS on PC and SMite on my xb1 have changed my outlook, I love them both.

For the record I can not stand League or Dota.

  • zellmerzellmer Member UncommonPosts: 442

An even more dumbed down version of League, it's almost pathetic...

Like its been said, League is a very stripped and dumbed down version of Dota already.  It is designed to be nowhere near as complicated as Dota and much more noob friendly for more casual games, even if its ridden with f2p stuff.

Hots is more like an ipad app that is trying to cash in on their popularity.  "Touch here!, Touch there, no brains required!!"

Everyone says dumbed down version not realizing that in reality Hots is a lot more competitive and hard.

Unlike with Dota and LoL where 1 person will carry you late game here if your whole team doesn't pull their weight the game is lost. There is no possibility to win 4vs5 even if you have been obliterating the enemy team for 20 min once the game reaches lvl 20 you will start losing.

What's more teamplay here is a lot more important than with other MOBAs because you can't take objectives alone.

The game was designed to be competitive and as far as I can see it's the most competitive.

Also for the people that were  throwing numbers. Blizzard sold 11 mil starter packs... when the starter packs were announced... that's a free game that got on it's first days 40-50 million.

I don't really understand why there are people that just hate on a game because they are fans of another game.

If  you like LoL it's fine. if  you like Dota it's fine. If you like Hots it's also fine. Each game have it's player-base and there is absolutely no need for pointless hate.

We will know if Hots can compete with other MOBAs in at least 6-8 months from now after at least few tournaments have been done and we see how players/viewers respond.

Whenever someone says "Less competitive", they are probably a fanboy and really are implying "more fun, less hassle", when they say "Dumbed down" they really mean "streamlined, efficient".

I played League for awhile, I watched pro twitch competitions and both in games, professional matchups looked and played completely different than normal matches. People performing insane feats/tactics I would be damned to try myself in most cases.

Hots is no less competitive, that doesn't even make sense. It's not candyland.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

Dota/LoL might take more skill but it also takes more time lane farming and time overall to finish a match.

I enjoy HotS more as team fights come early and I don't need to worry about last hitting and can focus on objectives/team fights.

True. The only plus side to those games are that they're usually over in 10-12 minutes. In other mobas those games can last 30+minutes.

heroes of the storm is an irrelevant game in a genre in which dota will completely dominate in a few years time. guaranteed 100%. you can quote me on this.

I like MOBAs so I tried it, but couldn't find any reason to leave LoL or SMITE for it. I guess if I was into the Warcraft IP I might like it for that, but I really couldn't get into it.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Too simplified for my liking. Haven't lost 1 single game even with 3 other incompetant team mates.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
