Doesn't have to be the word promise though.  "Will be in the game" is a promise.  Features on the box/website at the time of sale are a promise.

Certainly someone could dig up at least one example of devs failing one of those types of promises.  Over the years there surely must have been a game or two whose boxes listed features which weren't contained in the game.  Thousands and thousands of games have been made and I find it hard to believe nobody ever made that mistake.

But it's a really really rare mistake, so certainly the atmosphere of MMORPG games doesn't feel at all like politics.

AoC advertised  sieges on the back of the box on release, which didn't make it to the game after release.

Archeage / Trion did a bait and switch campaign with the founders packs.  Used one version of the game for the founders early access campaign and changed it to pay to win nearer release.  Founders were promised a discount in the cash shop which Trion receded at release.

SOE/SWG - After the game population brought an expansion pack, SWG and Lucas Arts in their wisdom released the devil in the form of the NGE.

Just a few deceitful behaviour by a few game companies from th etop of my head.

They only thing legit here is AOC. I have the box packed up somewhere, I'll just take your word for it, I have no reason not to.

Not familiar with Archeage. The word "promise" isn't anywhere to be found.

SWG/NGE crapola is covered by EULA. In fact, every expansion for every game made changes that game, by your logic. No companies pull boxes off shelves to update the game features on the box everytime an expansion or patch is released.

So, AOC. Siege weapons. Where's the 2/3s of features missing? I'm not really waiting for that, but, thought it would be cited at least.

How SOE went about it was nothing but shady, they literally lied about it multiple times. It was the same with the CU more or less as well.

I don't know if those count as features missing at release.

But, man those were two of the worst moments in gaming for me. I tolerated CU, but NGE? I was out. I didn't even bother to wait and see if the rumors were true. The deleted threads on the forums was enough confirmation for me.

Agreed, it was worse how they treated their own staff like Tyggs over it all. It was a complete mess. I personally feel CU wouldn't have been bad at all if it were the original showed to us.

MMOS are a thing of the past. The new thing is mobas and arena type games because the newer generation of players like quick, easy and convenience.  The newer generation does not earn victory, they buy it in the form of f2p games.

Do you care about facts at all?

    • Obviously it wasn't two-thirds of WAR's content that was cut.  It was 4 capital cities.  That's it.
    • Did you think WAR was the most amazing MMORPG ever?  Probably not.  Do you think it would've been better if their team was stretched even thinner than they were?
    • There appears to be a period of ~4 months where pre-orders were sold prior to the 4 cities being cut.  At no point were those cities promised to players.  They were in the game a while, and they wanted to turn up the dial on quality, and so some thing were cut.
    • Pre-orders are one of the riskiest ways to purchase a game (after crowdfunding.)  So at least part of the risk responsibility lies with the player purchasing something which they know will change because it's not complete yet.
    • Pre-orders can be canceled.
    • So if you look past the responsibility, the ability to cancel, the fact that these features weren't a significant portion of the whole, and the fact that cutting them undeniably improved the game, then sure you end up in a place where some of the people who pre-ordered during those ~4 months have a reason to be upset.
But after reading all that you should hopefully be struck by how much of a ridiculous nitpick this is.  With any game it is literally impossible for the company to change features on you if you never pre-order (or pre-order right at the last minute when the features and content are actually finalized.)

But yes, if you happened to be reckless, care a lot about the specific things cut, care little about quality, but somehow also lack the motivation to cancel your pre-order, then yeah you would've been "screwed by the company."

why oh why cant it be this simple.

"Deliver a product with x,yz features, Customer pays for product containing said features."

    whats really happening is:

"Say you are developing x,y,z but try to make as much mass market appeal by raising product expectations whilst cuting as many corners you can to maximize profit. leaving fans disgruntled because you had to scale back features because you made to much hype"

it is took late I am afraid.  Players chose the quick and easy path to the dark side when they embraced f2p . There is no going back. MMO gamers have changed things forever for the worse I'm afraid.

had to edit this also .. im done here .. cant stand talking with people that Cant Understand Normal Thinking........

Sorry you've been talking so much about WAR that I had assumed you'd played it or any MMORPG.  The way it works is you don't actually spend much time in capitals at all (maybe 3% of your total playtime) and if multiple capitals exist (Thunder Bluff vs. Orgrimmar) you end up spending at least 10x your time in the "main" capital.  This would mean it was more like 0.6% of WAR's content was cut, not a third.

Does it bother you that you were completely unable to address any of my points?  Surely at some subconscious level you must understand that what I'm saying is right, even if pride prevents you from agreeing.

"Normal thinking" in this case is the angry internet mob.  I understand that sort of thinking, but I strongly disagree with it.  I don't find it acceptable to hurl baseless accusations just because it's an anonymous public environment where mob mentality has made it seem okay to you to behave in a completely illogical manner.  You're capable of intelligent thought -- you don't have to simply fall into the generic baseless rage just because the mob's doing it.

    These forums here work fine.

In my experience, new forums are usually making things worse. Many years ago I was a frequent visitor of Bioware.com forums. Then EA came and OMG they made everything a LOT more awful.

I don't play politics. I do my own thing whatever that may mean for me good or bad. Usually, the end result is getting seen as some random who's opinion means very little. As long as I can say my piece one way or another. Whatever or however people act or say about that I leave up to them.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

If you'd played WAR that much, then you know firsthand how much of a politician you're being to claim the loss of those cities was "two-thirds of the game's content."  So nothing left to discuss there.

    In summary...

    • You have failed to provide evidence of your claim that all 6 cities were promised to players for WAR's release.
    • You have succeeded in providing evidence that 6 cities weren't promised for WAR's released.
    • You have failed to provide evidence of your accusation that AoC lied or broke promises.
    • You have failed to provide evidence of your accusation that Smedley lied or broke promises.
    • You have failed to provide evidence of this being a general problem with MMORPGs, so the accusation that this is a widespread problem is baseless.
    • You have succeeded in building a small case that the most reckless players who pre-ordered WAR during the 4 months before some cities were cut might be disappointed by their removal.
    • Which means we've succeeded in proving that a very narrow sliver of WAR's playerbase was vaguely misled, and (thanks to another poster) Archeage players were certainly lied to.  Which means it's not the widespread issue the OP implies it is.
    • Which is why we can now see (if we didn't before) how my assumption that this thread is built on believing marketing hype (slogans) is a lot more likely than it being based on evidence that this is actually a common problem.

Is is political or greed? Feels like the whole market is about quick money and all out greed-fest.

Which is either sexist or a personal attack.  Either way, the fact that you aren't addressing my points makes it clear to all that your argument here is baseless.

(Also a hilariously ironic thing to say to me, given the Idiocracy quote in my sig.)
