EverQuest II: Time-Locked Expansion Servers Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Daybreak Game Studio wants to put players in control of the game they are playing. With that in mind, the EverQuest II team is introducing something called "time-locked progression servers" in both PvE and PvP flavors. These will be available to All Access members only.

What does this mean?

Essentially, servers are "locked" to a particular point in time, to a particular expansion or content update. More expansion content can be added over time, though whether or not that will happen will remain in the hands of the server community.

The first two server polls, one each PvE and PvP, will launch today and run through June 23rd.

Read the post and the short FAQ on the EverQuest II site.

I didn't own a computer that would run EQ2 properly when it launched. This might be my chance to experience a quasi, early, EQ2.

Remembering shard runs..eep. Sounds like fun though would look into this.

This would be so amazing if the cash shop was disabled.

edit so people do not think I am a hater: I played it for years with the cash shop so I understand.  It is also my favorite game ever made. But there are other items on the cash shop that I do not agree with.  Xp pots and harvestable items are 2 that I do not agree with. A sub game should not have a cash shop in my opinion.

Furthermore, I was happy to see the in-game poll's questions were mostly about the marketplace.  If they do limit the marketplace's influence, I may be tempted to play!

Daybreak seems to be paying attention. My main issue at launch was that my PC couldn't run it. When I tried again later there wasn't much of a population. I think I may give this a shot.

It won't be, but I expect it will be restricted.

Much like Ragefire and Lockjaw I would expect to see things like bags and xp pots on there.

super cool idea, I wish they would do this with a slight exp boost say 200% of normal.

I think that's exactly the opposite of what players want.

At least EQ2 doesnt have lootboxes like every other game.  Its one of the easier cash shops to completely ignore as a subscriber.

Pretty sure the boat/island wont be there (which is so ridiculously overrated to begin with).   Fortunately each city has several 1-10 zones to level in. Sadly the old neighborhoods I believe are lost.

these servers wont give any idea of how EQ2 were at release, it is really just expansion locked servers. I can already see posts here about how much it suck, since the game will keep its identity crisis this way.

wont give much of an idea about how the game were in its first year.

Omg if there was no cash shop on that server i would be so into that.

I thought people didn't like eq2 when it released? Didn't they try to make it so you couldn't solo?

They didn't. But now there isn't vanilla WoW to smash it into a oblivion a second time, plus nostalgia gaming can only exist later, people have fond memories whereas during its release people were really fed up with EQ (and they jumped shipped to the quest heavy WoW).

That's funny.  My friends/guildies that couldn't afford to upgrade to a new rig where the only ones that jumped to WoW and all but 2 were back playing EQ within 6 months.  They said WoW was too easy.  Those of us that went to EQ2 stayed there for years before we all eventually moved on.

I'm sure WoW catering to casual players, ex-EQ players that couldn't cut it, cartoon art style aiming at teenagers and playable on everything except maybe Apple IIe computers had absolutely nothing to do with it. Maybe nostalgia has clouded your memory as well...

Omg, what case isn't this the truth in any game out now? Like said before, it's probably the easiest one to completely ignore...

But yeah, I guess you ignored that comment too.. Haters will be haters. But geesh, get over yourselves..Some people like to support games they play.

Wow that is like a real weird idea.

The ONLY time i would ever say this is a good idea is for two games ,SWG and FFXI to 75.That is because BOTH those games took a HUGE massive turnaround so ya.EQ2 has not been creative what so ever,it is just more maps more of the same old every step of the way.Even crafting is just more tiers doing the same thing. They built an assembly line game design, very generic no creativity at all and why i got tired of it.

What the idea is basically doing is trying to reinvigorate new CASH FLOW ideas and yes it does usually work, however it is also saying "here we will give you LESS content but still encourage you to spend the same money on our game".It actually encourages MORE spending because most players at this point  have their gear locked at end game and are not spending any money.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Believe it or not,my newer PC still struggles to run it,i can't believe how poorly optimized that game engine is.Nothing good has come from EQ1>EQ2>Vanguard all using the same tech, they need to toss that garbage and start making bug free games that run smoothly.

How is it 'weird' if it works?

If people want to experience a progression server and experience all the content, but slowly introduced over time, and build a new community and play experience around that... Why's that 'weird'?

My wife and I actually re subbed just to experience even 10% of what made us love this game from day 1. Hell it s our go back to game after bored with everything else game anyways. We re looking forward to everyone being noobs again (well with better knowledge about the game then at release). I don t care if it s exactly like at release, we just want to trudge through Wailing Caverns again and actually be scared. Can t wait, and with the sheer amount of content this game has, it will be a lot of fun for awhile I m sure.

We will have to see if I'm bored of Heavensward by the time they release this or not.....

Not sure though Ragefire kinda turned out a mess with boxing and only the massive guilds being able to do any kind of endgame with the spawn camping, I don't see how this one will be much different?

I would love to play but whats the point if I reach the expansion cap and can't do anything because everything is locked down by one or two guilds..........

This is just false as can be. They have made major upgrades to the code for the game and network optimizations for the past 4 years. This game runs better than ever! And just to throw this out there, this game is by far better than anything out right now!

I am so good, I backstabbed your face!
