Im desperate for a decent mmorpg, will this meet my needs ?

admriker444admriker444 Member Posts: 1,526

I have literally gone down that list on mmorpg.com and tried almost everyone of them. Some Ive played 14 day trials, others Ive devoted a few months to. One I played for 3 years counting beta (SWG) until Sony ruined the game.

I cant seem to find a replacement so now Im looking at various mmorpgs in beta. Its an act of desperation as I dont particularly like the idea of playing a mmorpg and then having that progress wiped.

Anyway, what can I expect from this mmo ?

1. PvP - it appears to be open pvp from the ganking complaints Ive read about ?

2. combat - says 1st person type game...this isnt a FPS is it ? Is there auto locked targeting or am I forced to point and click my targets ?

3. crafting - any real crafting with items tha decay ? Or can I expect the same old go kill a mob or quest and get my shiny new gun type stuff ?

4. socialization - is there anyplace to hang and chat ? Is there a place where players simply MUST go to get heals ? I tend to believe if a developer doesnt force players to gravitate to something (like needing wound heals from a dancer inside a cantina in SWG) players wont do it. There were ideal places to hang out in Matrix but because players werent forced to....they didnt.

5. General mmorpgs appeal - is there anything else to do besides combat ? Is there exploration, how about little min games like races or playing cards ? In short, what else is there besides combat ?

6. Community - what kind of community can I expect to see in this mmorpg ? If its anything like WoW I wont touch it.

Thanks for any advice. Im downloading the beta now

    well I finaly managed to get the client to download, could have been problems my end, and have had a qucik log in and look around;

confusing is a word that springs to mind despite having read about it. I rolled as a combatant but couldnt find any missions to take, so i changed to a trader to take one of the many production missions. HIT a brickwall on that one as i can find no way of making the required item. I was given, i guess the required ingredients but cannot find the item or any option to make it from the production terminal.

I to am rather much in need of a decent MMORPG to play having dabbled with most of the top ones available and not finding any of them drawing me in. Still trialing DAoC, but it feels a little 'wooden' to me, bleh see how it goes.

So if anyone here can help me with FoM let me know!

Well in the early days FOM was very promosing and very active some areas were very busy and the whole game was extremely fun with in-depth politics and large battles for planets etc

Then they changed alot of things and the game died in my opinion.

At present you may find most of the game empty and so you may struggle to find many player generated missions etc (this game is 100% player content created no NPC quests at all).

I would say reading your post that FOM probably isnt what your after at moment since its in a bit of transitional phase right now.

Was this game "due" for release April 2004 or 05?
  • homer4000homer4000 Member Posts: 24

there was never a due date...

  • GentyGenty Member Posts: 43
    yes, yes there was.
  • homer4000homer4000 Member Posts: 24

since when? the open beta started in 2005 so you must have been looking at a different game. And closed beta started in 2004 and there is no way that the due date was 2004/2005

There was only a due date for the open beta (which they missed by a couple of months). They never gave a projected release date.

Gamershell seemed to think different - http://www.gamershell.com/news/6731.html - "Duplex Systems is now inviting applications for the beta test of Face of Mankind, their upcoming futuristic MMOG due to be released in January 2004. There will be 4 stages of beta testing with the first one starting by the end of November this year. Follow the link below to get to the registration page".

gamesindustry.biz seemed to think different - http://www.gamesindustry.biz/news.php?aid=6019 - "Jolt recently struck a deal to provide hosting and infrastructure to the MMORPG, which has been in development at Duplex Systems since 2001 and is due for a full release in 2005 courtesy of Ojom GmbH."

Marko Dieckmann seems to think different - http://www.consolegameworld.com/article.php/id/338/

"[PC Gameworld] Beta is due to begin in November and release is expected around what time?

[Marko Dieckmann] Face of Mankind will not be released until we are totally satisfied that it is stable and relatively bug free. We expect release to be sometime in Q1 2004."

Even though they are inconsistant it kind of shows that a due date for release was given.

You can kill on any place, but on some earth places ( Like New York - Brooklyn there are turrets, who gun down everyone but the LED ( Police faction ) and FDC ( Militairy faction ), if rank 2. Means if you are not one of these factions or if you are but without rank 2. You get shot by a turret if you shoot at someone.

Its aiming like in Counter Strike, so you must actually aim and shoot. No pointing and clicking or auto click as in other MMORPGs. The MMORPG is mostly in the ''Role Playing'' part. Its nothing like another MMORPG. You can call it a MMOFPS with RP elements ( or the other way arround ) aswell.

You must produce all your stuff, or buy it from a Market Terminal. You can mine stuff at mining terminals, start either sell them on a market ( in a populated place ) and earn money from that. You can go a step further and produce these minerals into something else. ( Sometimes you need mutliple mineral types to make something ). Or you can make the end product that are the real items ( Guns/glasses/clothes/ammo/medikits etc. ) Every item you see that a person can wear, is able to be produced. But to make such a item you must buy a PMOD for the specific item, which will cost you 50k.

There are no ''chat areas'', but in New York Brooklyn, you have the biggest chance to get some decent chat ( depending on your faction also ). To heal you can use a medical terminal, which you find in lot of areas, but there you won't be finding anyone chatting. There is only one safe zone in this game, and thats the zone you get teleported to when you die. Its called the cloning facility, you can chat there but most will just plain make sure they are out fast to probally go back into combat. ( You will come here a lot at the start, so make sure you have clone insurance, which will cost you minimal 2k a ingame month )

Producing mainly, but this is a nice suggestion. Make sure you suggest this on the forums ( http://forum.fomportal.com Under Citizen Network in the Suggestions forum )
The Developers will really check up on good ideas. And they read the forums a lot.

I don't know the WoW community, I just say its a unique one. Its still in beta, so you can expect to find CS kids, aswell as mature adults who are 100% into some good role play. Its a kind of mix up, but meet the right people, take the time to play this game . ( Don't give up after 10 minutes ) and im sure you will find some nice place in this game, eventually making you choosing the faction that thinks fits you most, and you will hang out with the people you like most .

Myself I play for a year now, and I played the good and bad times ( now a bad time, I got banned from the game ::::07::::::07:: )

    Your welcome...

Now to clear up some other things:

So if anyone here can help me with FoM let me know!

That there was no mission for you as combatant, is because probally there was one running and your faction higher ranks didn't think it was needed to put another one up ( or you joined a less active one with only few high ranks ).

That you couldn't do the trader missions is because you need a PMOD to make items, ( costs 50k ).

There WILL BE basic missions for combatants and all other proffesions, so you won't need a PMOD to make something. But as this is in Beta its not there yet, but im sure it will be very soon.

The game didn't die, since the start of Open Beta the player base is bigger then ever. But it depends on your timezone, there are a lot of USA players ( yet the game is European based ), and if you play in that timezone you will notice many more will be online. Also what you say about the big battles, I don't know what you are talking about, but last time I logged in I came in middle of big battles. There are wars going on like almost allways, and politics go on also. I don't know if you either still play and are in VI or something or that you quitted some time ago.

About this release date thing, the game was actually in a finished state, but then DPS/Ojom tried to do something else, and they upgraded their engine, during Open Beta period. This made it that they have REDONE everything ( Char models, economics, proffesions, changing the worlds, making new worlds. ). And there are many more plans to come. So yea its gonna take a while before this game goes P2P. If they didn't do a engine upgrade it probally was p2p already...

If you need any help, just ask on the Face of Mankind forums for any help, and im sure some people will help you in no time ( depending on the faction ofcourse ( but you will get help in all I can assure you ! )
    http://forum.fomportal.com/

First important thing to do is, make your game account, get ingame. Then go to the fomportal.com site, go to ''Change Settings'', there link your forum account with your game account, relog on the forums. And you will have your name + faction + rank shown on the forum. Making you get help a lot easier/faster. Also it makes you able to see your private faction forums!
