Guild Wars 2: Pre-Purchase Concerns Subject of Community Address

ShelassaShelassa MMORPG.COM Staff UncommonPosts: 616

The Guild Wars 2 site has been updated with a new post that addresses some of the major concerns that many players and community members have had since the beginning of the Heart of Thorns pre-purchase program announced at E3.

Veteran players will be glad to hear that if they registered the core game prior to January 23rd, 2015 and pre-purchased and registered the expansion key, they will receive one additional character slot. There is no timeline on when the slot will become available, but the team will have the community updated.

Anyone who purchased the base Guild Wars 2 game between January 23rd, 2015 and June 15, 2015 will have the purchase price refunded if the Heart of Thorns expansion is bought and registered prior to July 31, 2015.

Those who purchased Guild Wars 2 during the same dates, but who are no longer interested in Guild Wars 2, will have the entire purchase price refunded and their accounts closed by request.

Those who purchased Guild Wars 2 from a third party vendor such as Amazon will be unable to receive a refund from ArenaNet, however, if the game was registered between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 and upgraded to any edition of pre-purchased Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, an additional character slot will be added to the account.

The process of delivering your additional character slot will be the same as described above. If you would like a refund, you will need to contact that third party, as refunds are dependent on their policies and rules.

Read all the details on the Guild Wars 2 site.

Good to see they did this.  Personally I was happy with things as they were but I can use my gems on other things now with the extra slot.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

That's great and all but it doesn't address the concerns of the public when it comes to the lack of content or the problems coming with more decisions like these in the future especially considering the long history of decisions like the one to leave out the extra slot in the first place.

It is always good when companies reward loyal customers.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to happen much and that is why I keep changing stuff like insurance, isp, gas, etc.

This will of course appease the veterans, which were going to buy the expansion regardless, but will do nothing for the haters.

Nice over generalization there.  I am a veteran but this doesn't particularly appease me.

My bad I somehow received this as if you felt he called you a hater.. been a long day.

This doesn't appease me either. What they need to do is offer a really fun open world event like Southsun, and give out some really cool one time rewards, and use that to kick off the next chapter in Living Story.  Set the new zones off with a bang, and if people were waiting for a better deal, well then they get to miss out.  THAT would appease me.

For me it's the bare minimum they should have done to address this, but at least they did something other then just sit on their hands and ignore the community.

That said the PR damage is already done and these changes won't be enough to address it. I'm all for supporting ANet and the $50 price isn't that much considering there are no sub fees. They should have done their homework better before offering the crazy sales prior to the launch of the xpac and on what they included in the pack. Not providing a character slot with the crappy limit the game provides by default but providing a new class was either a deliberate mliking the cash-cow move or just a plain stupid oversight that's cost them dearly.

Edit: the major disappointment is the lack of higher level meta in WvWvW. They added a new map (zzz) but should have improved the mechanics and functionality instead. I like the basic gameplay but it's so beyond stale now it's grown legs and started kicking itself in the butt.

i don't get it. so those that bought the game early, only have the slot option and those that bought it late will get refund if they pre-purchase the expansion? lol.

also Anet said they are gonna giveaway the core game and the expansion for "free" with the next expansion if there is gonna be any. good for them. now this is what i will do: will either wait for the next expansion to get it "free" or will just wait for sales or something. they have to really blow me away with the content to change my mind.

PS: i am sure some gonna love it and defend NCSOFT/Anet no matter what though and call others names etc. good for them also, but usually these trends have follow ups, so i am gonna be wary and wait. just my suggestion :)

Now I get an extra character slot. Thats great.  But that really should be the end of it.  They need to stop letting a very small minority of grown up children run their game.  I mean seriously in guild chat today I had a guildie complaining that she won't buy it until they discount it the cost of the original box.

Seriously? Its like.. I just bought GW2 the other day for 5 dollars....  the cost of a character slot now is what.. 10 dollars?  That seems more than fair now.  Still people will just complain and complain... but in the end ..sooner or later... they all buy it regardless.

Way I see it, Anet caught crap from websites for their expansion problems, caught crap from their fans, and from news sites like this one. This "reward" isn't them listening to the fans, or rewarding vets as they weren't going to do that at the beginning this is them listening to their bottom line.

This is merely them trying to put out a fire they created with this. Trying to appease the websites so that the expansion will sell. Sorry but Anet doesn't get a free pass. Other companies get hell for this sort of thing, so do they.

This rewarding is code (like everything else with them) for backpedling. It just sounds nicer. You know like calling public quests dynamic events.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Hey I'm all for that.  I've been calling anet out on that dynamic event nonsense since before launch and came back to "I told you so" for months after -----   and while you're right that they're backpedaling a little.. everyone needs to understand that they could have said they're releasing a new standalone package and you'd still have them crying that its not good enough.

People are literally stating the content that is going to release isn't good enough, and yet we barely even know how much content there will be.  I'd rather Anet just stand their ground.  We've learned long ago MMO players will never be happy.  I say just release whatever, and let the chips fall where they may.

The price thing was never that big of an issue for me. My problem came from pre-ordering something that I have simply not seen enough of to validate knee jerk cash spending on.

I'm a patron of Rift since rift was in beta, same thing with Tera and even Aion. Those games all given their xPacks away for free (Except the first Rift xpack when it was still P2P, although I got it for free from Raptr), so that make me wary of blowing $50 on something when we haven't seen much of the new zones, not even half of the new specializations, and only getting one new class. People that are defending the gems you get are also confusing to me, because it isn't as though the gems are actual currency coming out of ANet's pocket. They can make as many as they want when they want, and I normally give ANet $10-20 a month as a show of good faith anyhow, so why do I need more gems? The extra character slot... I have leveled about 10 characters to level 80, and it have become tedious. A single new class isn't going to make me suddenly want to do it again. The timing of the pre-ordering wasn't lost on me as well, as the end of the financial quarter is coming up here shortly, so having a good number of folks throwing $50-$100 at GW2 will look great for NCSoft on the reports.

Now I have mentioned the other games I have supported. This isn't to say i have blindly bought their goods either. To this day I do not have the new classes for Rift introduced with the new xPack, because those classes simply did not interest me enough to validate that purchase.

As release gets closer, and more information becomes available, I'll make up my mind about ordering, or I will end up waiting for one for the 50-75% off sales ANet does so frequently and buy the xPack later on. I prefer to look at this from a bit of a pessimistic view until proven otherwise. I'm not damning GW2 at all, I hope the xPack is absolutely ball out of the park great, but before I can support it, I need to see why I should support it.

That's all I wanted, was my 1 character slot, thanks Anet.
  • BekaBeka Member UncommonPosts: 59

For me there just isn't close to $50 worth of content in HoT. After all the stuff that never showed up the game from their manifesto, added to some of the terrible things they've done (like the revamped leveling and gating of content for lower level characters), to the not very enjoyable (to me) new map types (Silverwastes, yuck, more terrible jumping nonsense), to the very poor gliding (seriously, couldn't ANet have checked their parent company's game Aion to see how gliding is handled in a fun way)... 3 years to finally fix the camera and FOV stuff that should have been fixed in beta... Enough, ANet, enough. You haven't show anything close to $50 of content for this expansion... so I'll wait until a half price sale, if even then. Good game that is poorly run by greedy and lazy devs. 3 years of dev time for this very minor expansion? What the heck were all these devs doing since release? Clearly not creating much new content, it seems. Sad, considering the core of the game is so good.

LEL people act like the character slot was the problem- but it is the content they are offering- thats the real problem here.

The content is not even worth 30 dollar

    - half game of GW2 release

    - 1 char class

    - 1 new boring map

    - 5 new kills for every class

    - and they are fooling people with guildhalls- a featuer that has been there for 3 years and        now is selled for cash.

i remember gw1 xpacs had like 120 new skills for every xpac.

As of now, almost everything you listed is not in Heart of Thorns.

Look, I got no problems with people pre-ordering a completed expansion or an almost completed expansion for any price. Personally, if ArenaNet successfully puts in every feature they talked about I'd say it's well worth $50.

But it ain't no where near there yet and I'd be legitimately concerned about NC Soft. Look at EQN and Daybreak, if Nexon takes control anything could happen. For your own sake, exercise some caution here.

Arenanet and Guild Wars franchise is one of the cash cows of NCSoft.

GW1 success had already given Arenanet 5 years (that is a truckload of money). GW2 success gave Anet 3 years to cook out an expansion.

It doesn't matter if NCSoft is bought up by Nexon or if NCSoft goes bankrupt - while GW2 is getting this kind of financial success, no one will dare touch it.

This talk reminds me of vanilla GW2 pre-purchase, where people were saying that only a few areas were complete and this was all a big con.

Just like vanilla GW2, GW2:HoT is going to happen and it is very likely that is going to be a financial success.
