ARK: Survival Evolved: PvP Servers to be Wiped After Duping Exploit Uncovered

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

After the last update to Ark: Survival Evolved, a serious duplication bug was detected by players that saw unlimited ammo, guns, metal walls and C4. As a result of community outcry, developers have announced that all PvP servers will be wiped but that character progress will remain intact.

Alright guys, we got you.

PvP servers will be wiped. (This should not impact PvE servers)

Character Engram/Level progress will not be touched, but all items and the map will be wiped out.

Please just try and keep the chatter in this topic, eh? I'm not locking threads to stop discussion, just keep it in one place ;)

Is about to happen on new game, even hackers will find ways to be cheating soon. Hope this don't scare people away.

    Game is still Early Access.

So it's on the players.  They know they're testing the game.

    That's how it works.

They really should have had a complete restart/release of the  game. They caved to the outcry. But seriously the game is 3 weeks old and a lot of people have gotten a lot of stuff (legitimately and illegitimately) and people crying about all the 'work' and time they haveput in and how it would be "unfair" to wipe everything.

PvP servers basically get wiped everyday anyway since peopel raid guys and destroy everything they own when they log off. But PvE saw its share as well. I fly the map daily and over about 2;/3s of it (thats a lot actually) and Wed it was all fairly empty, Thursday started seeing a little more building Fri and Sat saw massive building and incredibly fast upgrading from wood to metal. Mines have been walled off, most easy foot paths have been blocked and any and all decent property spots have not just been held with single foundations but have complete settlements on them.

People can say on PvE servers it doesnt mean much but it does. Because grifers and stopping people from playing the game through cheated structures has a definite impact on the sevrers.

Today was a perfect chance for these developers to basically reset their game. They had another major patch, where they started introducing a new building type (which due to the dupes is irrelevant), introduced a lot of optimizations, and the game is still less than a month into an early release.  So a perfect chance to 'relaunch'  the game. But they failed. Its one thing to listen to players its another to let them dictate what should and shouldnt be done.

To me it looks like these developers think the game is already released and are treating players like 'customers' and dont want to offend them in anyway and are hoping that when full release happens (and the eventual cash shop) they will have banked so much good will.

Either way very turned off by how they handled this. It actually sets a very bad precedent and shows how these guys think. Game has potential to be the next big thing but theyre making a lot of decision s based on a vocal minority which is eventually going to rub the silent majority the wrong way.

The irony is they used 'progression' as the excuse to why they didnt wipe all servers but the progression on the PvE servers was light years ahead of what it had been the past few days. So preogression gotten through cheating PvP or PvE is still cheating and should be dealt with.

So I am just going ot play on the unofficial servers. They dont have the issues and roll backs or problems the official servers have either.

They did reset the game, just not the characters.  All items/dino's/items gathered and inventories were removed allowing people to start pretty much equal other than char level.  I personally think how they handled things was correct.

They even state in another post that they had not kept proper backups and world saves in place this time around so that a roll back to a spot before the dupes began was not possible and has since been rectified so that future issues will be fixed with a rollback rather than a world reset.

Consider this a lesson both for players and the dev team.

Players that exploit bugs can end up losing everything.

Devs needed deeper backups in place to restore things to before exploitation (Which they are doing now)

    Only for the PvP servers

That's true, I'm not sure how (other than blocking off land) that exploiting resources on pve would affect other players since there is no fighting between players, no building destruction, no dino killing and such.  The only things I can see being an issue would be land grabbing/blocking that could cause problems for other players otherwise duping only ruins it for the duper since they have nothing to work toward.

actually it is a bigger problem on PvE servers.... On PvP servers there is always a solution... Brute force if nothing else... But once someone block off an area on a PvE server.... That place will stay blocked until the owner grows tired of being a douchenozzle.

And that is the reason i stay away from this type of games. I like to take my time and be methodical in my advancment... But since i do not join the landgrab i will be forever cut off from some material and items unless i like to pay the scalper who got there first.

Game is still in early Alpha stage...so players should keep on pointing exploits so the Devs can correct them.

Expect many wipes during this early access & beta stage! That´s whats all about! Ironing the game.

Can't cut off people from materials, they already have measures in place to prevent that. You can't build near caves to block them off which have the most important resources. All other resources are plentiful. These guys actually know what they are doing.

well i assumed we where talking about exploits...  =)

I have seen this exact scenario played out in many games over the years. So pardon my slightly less than positive outlook on the teams ability to curb this kind of stuff.

This also do not change the fact that in theory you always have more tools on a PvP server to solve it then on a PvE.
