I Don't Know Anything About Final Fantasy. Can I Still Enjoy This?

FuryVFuryV Member UncommonPosts: 515

I grew up totally ignoring Final Fantasy as I didn't wanna have to start at number one and play my way through all of them in order to understand the story, considering there was so many.

I wish I knew more about FF as A Realm Reborn really looks like a fun game to keep me occupied for a while.  I was gonna give the trial a shot although one thing has been holding me back... I don't know anything about FF or the FF universe.

Is this game friendly to players who don't know anything about Final Fantasy or is it gonna carry on the storyline from the previous games?  I'd love to be able to get into this game but not knowing anything about the FF series is making me wonder if I'm just gonna be left confused the whole time.

Thanks guys.

I just read a small beginner's guide to Final Fantasy.

Gave me a general idea of what the series is about, but as a new player is there anything important I should know about Final Fantasy?

Also, I'll most probably be a 'Rogue' in game, but having read the wiki and noticed in the character creation there is no Rogue option.  On the wiki it says "Prerequisite: You must have completed level 10 class quest for at least 1 Disciples of War or Magic class. You must have unlocked the Armory System".

Does that mean I have to get to level 10 with a class I don't even wanna play, before I can get access to create the class I DO wanna play?

Yes. Rogue/Ninja was added later in a patch and their introduction was part of the main story. The other classes start you off in one of three main cities and your first quests will serve as an introduction to the game and story. After that (lvl 10) you will be able to head to the rogue's guild and join up with them.

You will need the cross skills from other classes which you will have to level in any case so pick a beginner class for a one of the class whose skills you will require . Although rogue only needs level ten in any disciple pick a class you need the skills from as a ninja for example the lancer or pugilist this way you will not have to level those from start again to get to the level of the skills you need.

If you are like me, loving the WoW-Rogue, especially in Open PvP, there is no real reason to pick this class in FF XIV as there is no reasonable PvP. But at least the Ninja-Class got Stealth, as far as I know.

first of all you don't need to know any thing about Final Fantasy to enjoy this game.

Second about you wanting to play a rogue please keep in mind that your class is fluid in this game.  So yes you have to start another class (I recommend lancer) and play it till lvl 10 to unlock the rogue.  As you play through the game you will switch classes a lot to gain additional skills, or just to mix things up.  Yes your rogue will start off at lvl 1, but it doesn't take long to lvl it up to 10, and you can use it from then on.

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.

Seriously?  So in order to fully level a single class, I have to then level up other classes just so I can get all the skills I need on the Rogue? Wtf?

I don't have 'alt-itis'.  I don't like playing alts.  Is this game really gonna force me to level up more than one character just to improve the character I DO wanna level up?

No you can do this with your one character. You can be as many classes as you want with one character; it's dependent on the weapon you equip what class you currently are.

If it's any help I'm going the same way you are. Since I want to make my character a Ninja, the requirements to be a ninja are  level 30 rogue and level 15 pugilist. (see Class vs Job in FFXIV http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Jobs)

So, since you can't 'start' as a rogue, I did pugilist to 15. At about 15 you get the quest to travel to the other major cities, I hopped the airship to Limsa Lominsa and went to the npc to start the rogue line.

If you want to be a monk, start as a Lancer.

On one character, you can be every single class, and every crafting and gathering class, and level them up fully.  In fact there is a lower sub option for people who want to only stick with 1 character per server (8 servers max) of $13 instead of the traditional $15.

There are some essencials skills to get from other classes, mainly + dmg cooldowns and such.

To advance your class to your "job" (ninja in the rogue's case) you need to be level 30 in Rogue and 15 in pugalist on one character.

and you basically want to always be your job after you can get it, since you get a stat boost and job only skills, unavailable to the base class.

So as the above poster said, since you need pugalist to level 15 anyway, start as one, and then switch to rogue after you hit 15.

No, it's all on one character. So you want to be a Ninja right, here what you do:

Create your character, I'd suggest a pugilist (hand-to-hand fighter) because their actions are usable by rogue/ninja.

Level your character as a pugilist until you get access to travel between cities (part of story quests)

Once you can travel and are level 15 (need level 15 pugilist to be a Ninja) go to Limsa Lominsa and join the Rogue's Guild.

Now your character is a level 1 rogue AND a level 15 pugilist.

Do the Limsa Lominsa city quests as a rogue and you'll be 15 again in no time.

Keep questing and following the main scenario until you hit rogue 30.

After you get your rogue class to 30, along with your pugilist to 15, you can do the Peasants by Day, Ninjas by Night quest to unlock the Ninja job.

Jobs are like classes but more specialized. Your Ninja and Rogue levels are linked, if you level as a Ninja, your Rogue levels and vice versa.

Pretty much at any time in FFXIV you can change your characters class. You simply talk to the class guildmaster, join the guild and BOOM level one of that class. You can then swap weapons any time outside combat to switch.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

In addition to everything, every class you play on a character that is a lower level than your highest class gains +100% exp from kills, fates (open world events), and Levequests (specific kind of questgiver that gives repeatable quests based on a allowance you have).

You get this up to level 50, assuming you have a class that is higher, and from 50-60 you gain +50% xp, again assuming you have a higher level class.

OK cool.  So I don't need to delete the Pugilist in order to make a Rogue?  I can just turn my Pugilist into a Rogue?

  • RadixMalorumRadixMalorum Member UncommonPosts: 143
Even better, if your pugilist is 15... you can turn to rogue and at level 30 you can turn into a ninja. It's not even remotely a wasted effort
  • FuryVFuryV Member UncommonPosts: 515

Awesome.  I thought I'd just have to make a random character with random looks & a random name, as I'd be deleting it at level 15 anyway.  I may as well just turn it into my main character from the start.

    Thanks!

Knowing about final fantasy actually makes this game worse because it falls so short in the gameplay department....lol

I thought it fell short in the story/acting department.

I like both and am a FF fan since the first. I haven't cared for FF story lines since XI but I would say this is the best story since VI for me now that I have gotten into heavensward story arch.

I don't know about Heavensward, but it's just goofy, really the only way I can describe it.

I know a bunch of people that didn't know anything about final fantasy but now love the game.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

There is definitely more to love if you are familiar with the rest of the series.  There are a lot of references to the older games that are considered a major plus to a lot of players that rate this game highly.

That being said.  My boyfriend has never played Final Fantasy anything before and he absolutely loves this game.
