SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Anarchy Online forum has been updated with a post that indicates that the 'new engine' version of the game is now available for download and installation. Additionally, a Reddit petition has begun to urge developers to start a brand new server using the new engine.

Added option to download a "New Engine" version of the game and play on the Live server; the installer is ~5GB in size, with a installation size of ~23GB. Click here to start downloading.

Thanks to GolbezTheLion for the tip.

    Wait WHAT?

After 10 years of waiting and believing it's vaporware?

On a random day without building up any hype beforehand?

    *download*

[e] Apparently it's only for the test live server, but still...

I guess hell indeed froze over at least. That's a lot of additional space for bump mapping.

If it turns into something decent I might go hunt me a few leets again, for old time's sake. image

    This is incorrect.

You have the option to continue using the old engine, or install the new engine.  The install files can be found from the above thread.

Anybody have pics or vid of this? I've heard this "new engine" line before...

9 lines of text patch notes when launching a new engine? And no info of what has changed at all?

I am confused, from posts here already, no textures has seemed to be changed, and from the nine lines of text in the patch notes. Nothing seems to have changed.

What does the new engine bring? Flowers?

Found a recent video on the improvements, I can't tell you what has changed because I don't play, but was curious to see myself.

If your an old player you won't be impressed. Its sad that after years of waiting this is what we got. They claim its a work in progress so i guess in a few years it might look good. Its not enough to bring people back willing to still pay a sub.for this game.

New engine, same old shitty 1999 downloader.

So this much time and money invested and I just checked it out and its horrible, new engine and they did not even update character models? Collisions are insane, and it is not even reading 3D renders correctly. Someone definitely needs to be fired over this.

Best game mechanics ever developed in an MMO. But the graphics are tired.

The game is 14 and the "new" engine is itself, the better part of a decade old . So don't expect too much. I really don't think this is going to impress anyone.

Still, if this alone can breathe some new life into the game, it'll be worth it.

So, it looks the same, with the exception of lighting...  That's all I noticed.  No new textures, models, effects,... Oh, and grass you can see move!

I can see why there was no hype, because this doesn't really do much.

    huge waste of dev time
  • GreatswordGreatsword Member RarePosts: 428

To be fair, I don't think they have more than one person (0.5 FTE) working on AO and this glorious new engine anymore.

Still, sad to see a decade of hope burried like this. RIP AO, I can finally let go of you.

I'm pretty sure it was a matter of sunk cost at this point. Had they give up it would've been a huge waste of time and money resulting in nothing. And something is better than nothing in the end.

Play tested it a bit last night and this morning. I'm not impressed.

However, it was previously unplayable under DX7 due to terminated legacy support for the graphics. At least now the game is playable under my aging GPU. To think about this that way......it's actually kinda pathetic.

But if some of my old Org-mates return, I'm in. Game was still good with its tired old graphics. I only quit after my PC could no longer play it........and the fact that everyone I knew left.

    It wasn't released until now?

I swear I read about this update many years ago..

  • RandaynRandayn Member UncommonPosts: 904
I would love to start an MMMORPG.com org if anyone is up for it.  Any enhancement to the graphics is a good thing and I was playing the game before it.  Just haven't been in an org for a while so it's not as fun without people to play the game with.
