The one thing in MMOs today there is no shortage of is nursing little cry babies who for whatever reason cannot stop trying to compair one game to another. Waaaa there is too much instancing. Waaa it has twitch combat. Waaa I just dropped my bottle.
Come on folks isnt it time you all just cut it out? If you like the game buy it and play - if you don't like the game then don't buy it, but if the latter is your choice please stop coming onto the forums with your grief and tears as it isnt going to change anything at all.
The game is solid, fun, and is an awesome time! Its not twitch as there is a certain amount of skill involved - you don't just stand there clicking a button. It's almost like a dance - you engage in combat and throughout the entire encounter your moving and trying to counter act the creature your up against. You guys bash this more than you bash all the other game combined and on the other games you simply target and hit an attack key then sit back and see what happens.
I see so often that it doesnt have an MMO feel but there are people everywhere!! In the pubs, in the cities and in the dungeons.
News flash - only way to be in game right now is if you PRE-ORDER and there are a freaking TON of people online even in the wee hours of the night.

You say there is skill, what skill when you are circle strafeing like there is no tommorow and mashing your attack mouse button with feverish play akin to whack a mole. This is a first person shooter twich game that rolls dice to see if you hit or miss just to make it somehow related to D&D combat, so they can call it D&D to appease the namesake. Doesn't that seem ridiculous? If you want to make a twich action rpg with circle strafes like Quake, then make sure when you use your l44t circle strafing skills to get in and swing the sword it connects, not miss 90% of the time like is the case here in DDO, because of a dice roll. Similarily with this technique you can solo most of this content and it becomes a game of how well you can time your hits while circle strafing hoping your die roll hits. This game has an identity crisis and thats being nice about it.

The same rules in your silly little schtik apply to you, especially the thing about being representative of the community. You may think you are witty and cool with your little "I am flaming X for multiple choice Y", but that was a cool and funny thing 1 year ago on the wow forums at best.. get a new a joke please.
Disclaimer: these are my own opinions and not the community at large, who may think you are funny and witty.
Damn, I wrote up a long reply about the problem with the combat and stuff, but then the internet ate it.
Some people really need to take a step back and look at the things more globally. It is not just Fion here that "hates" on DDO. Looking at countless different forums and threads about ddo you can clearly see that there are plenty of people thinking the same. To ignore all of them because they are just haters due to their mum not breast feeding them as kid is the most dumb thing to do. Lots of people who give ddo negative feedback are wording their concerns very civilized and look at things quite objectively, as opposed to someone pulling out the old "yousa hata".
Turbine should not be mistaken in thinking that big license names like D&D and LOTR alone make for a success. Especially not in a game that needs to be supported for long with a monthly fee. I am playing the beta for a while now and today was quite frustrating as I realized the game doesn't get better as I hoped. Instead I just encountered more errors and big issues in balancing that took the fun out of it for me and the group.
I like the instancing in the game for the adventures very much, but Turbine failed to make the most of it. In an interview I just read the lead content designer claiming that the instancing helps them to create content that feels like you actually change things. Yeah right, thats why the sanctuary doors I opened in the first part of the quest were all closed again and the same big mob came at the same place I killed him before already, when I came back for the 2nd part. There is just so many claims in that one interview alone which are totally untrue if you played the game and saw for yourself it is really aggravating. Claiming that they didn't build a big world like in other mmo's because then it would all look too stretched and empty when their own game only has one big city that feels like a ghost town, that is what I call bullshit. Not that the game could handle masses of people anyways, with the few running around in the beta now it drops into a slideshow very easy.
But I guess now someone will tell me "but dude it is still beta, what do you expect". What do I expect? After reading the newspost that DDO has gone gold in the US I expect a finished game, not something that feels like a closed beta at best.
Maybe the questons should have been pointed more toward this companies future rather than DDO.
I read the following news on Atari and Infrogames and the pucker factor goes way up.
"On Nasdaq, video game developer Atari (ATAR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) reported an unexpected quarterly loss and said there was "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue as a going concern, sending shares down nearly 18 percent to about 71 cents."
"UPDATE 1-Atari to cut about 20 percent of workers Fri Feb 17, 2006 6:13 PM ET"
"LOS ANGELES, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Video game company Atari Inc. (ATAR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday it will cut about 20 percent of its global work force as it restructures its operations in a move to reduce costs in line with revenue declines."

Typical fanboy babbling and you should not post if you know nothing. The game is in open beta at Fileplanet and the preorder beta only got people 10 days access to beta. Call people who do not like what you do cry babies sucks and you got no clue dude why people post here. I WANT to like this game but as it is now it is extremely repetitive and boring and will not attract the attention of any serious online gamer more then a couple month. And i have to stick with it as i preordered my game in the US from Europe and cannot cancel my preorder anymore, else i would.
Isn't it sad that all developers appear incapable of telling the truth. For a start DDO is NOT an mmorg and plays more like a LAN based game. Secondly the combat system is getting a hell of a lot more negative responses than positive but the fact that this guy thinks it is the best part of the game in his opinion appears to outweigh that.
With a license as massive as Dungeons & Dragons you would expect huge numbers anticipating it's release and pre-ordering, this however is not the case. DDO does not even feature in play.coms top 100 pc games ( which includes pre-orders) while RF online appears at No.70 which should tell Turbine something.
Turbine have made quite a few design errors with this game but like all developers they will simply wash over them with statements like 'the feedback is mostly positive'
Originally posted by Fion I agree, D&DO feels about as much like playing Table Top D&D 3.5 as guzzling piss feels like drinking a Dew.Neverwinter Nights 2 is do out this spring and as far as I'm concerned, nobody will give D&DO a 2nd chance."Wait you mean NWN2 is more like actual D&D with more online content then D&DO could dream of and no running through that same warehouse filled with boxes (this is what we call the CHEAPEST 'filler' TRICK IN THE BOOK!) and those few mobs behind that locked gate that I have done so many times now I could do it in my SLEEP!?!?"Every one I see who likes the game (and more power to you man, seriously), has the same 'it's trying to capture the feel of pen & paper D&D. No game can actually play like D&D.. pffft."let me finish that.. "It's trying to capture the feel of pen & paper of D&D, it just plays nothing like that. A bunch of traps that go off as soon as you get near them and 'stupid rouge, disarm, teh box is right there!' just does this SOOO well.Let me tell ya this. Not only have other games captured the feel of Pen & Paper D&D, they've captured the play style, the adventurous and explorative nature. They've captured the beauty of the classes and how they work with each other. These games are generally made by a little company called Bioware or Black Isel Studio's (know basicly Obsidian Entertainment.) They've been capturing the feel of D&D for years and doing it right. With the first Neverwinter Nights, they did a great job of capturing the feel of playing D&D with friends. Now NWN2 is on the horizons and it'll do it even better. Only it'll have more to explore, more content, more online stuff to get involved with. No repetative dungeons or everyone having the exact same gear or this small little town with hardly anything to explore in it. Instead it'll have a real world, that can be expanded on or improved with real D&D playing, real D&D characters, classes, feats, monsters, spells, and.. low and behindA REAL D&D COMBAT SYSTEM!Not to act like a bioware fanboy but I tried my best over the past 6 odd months to beta-test this game and I could just never get past the repetative and dull nature. I even got a character to mid level.. mind numblingly so.. and let me tell you, I'll never buy it. No matter how much WotC touts it as Dungeons & Dragons.
Abso-damn-lutely... To me, *the* D&D game to get is NwN2. NwN was my first foray into online multiplayer RPGs and, to this day, it hasn't been matched - even by the big-gun MMORPGs out there. Maybe it's nostalgia talking, but I just have so many fond and great memories of playing alongside friends in a truly tight-knit community on some of the persistent worlds I'd played on.
Honestly, I think some of the people who created custom content for their own NwN worlds could come up with an incredibly good D&D MMO if given the tools and resources and time to do so; an amazing pool out there of creativity and talent, and most importantly, a firm grip on the concept of *fun*. Some MMO developers could take several tips from many of these folks.
DDO, to me, does not even come close to the feel of PnP I had while playing NwN. You could group up, or you could solo.. You could hang out in a tavern and talk of adventures or whatever else came up, over an ale.. You could wander and explore the countryside freely. You had carte blanche to do whatever you or your party-mates wanted to do, when ever you wanted. No artificial barriers. And in NwN servers, far more often than not, the players *do* roleplay - not merely by using emotes and heavy-handed "thee", "thy" and "thou". But by actually creating a character with a history, a personality and an agenda (or 4), and filling their shoes, convincingly and consistently. Some of my favorite characters in a game have come from NwN servers I played on. DDO in the time I played it, felt like a sloppy mish-moshing of weak MMO elements (way too heavy on instancing) and D&D creatures, etc.
In the end, I think the interviewer put it exactly right... to paraphrase: "Do you think that D&D was the wrong setting for this game?"
Unless key aspects are changed dramatically, I say, "absolutely the wrong setting."

Another thing there's no shortage of are raving fans of the game who are intolerant of any negative point-of-view or criticism about it. They write posts... hmm.. kinda like yours!... basically telling anyone who says something they don't like, to shut up, calling them "whiners" or whatever.
Get over it. There's as much room for positive feedback as there is for negative. Expressing both, or anything in-between, is kinda what forums are for.
Maybe in the future you should get a clue of what medium you're addressing before you post such things. Or, you know, take the common-sense, time-tested approach - and just ignore it.

No I said most not all, and the analogy applies to pretty much any new game that seems to come out. My personal favorite is OMFG no PVP!!1, this game will fail in less then a year.
I agree with a lot of the games shortcomings. I would have preferred a couple other campaigns over Eberron but overall I think the game is pretty solid for what they are going for.
My original post would apply most to someone like fullmetalalc, if you read any of his posts they could best be described as trolling. Its one thing to not like a game but to post over and over because he obviously must have some extreme bias against Turbine is a little pathetic. Check a few posts in the DDO forums and you will see for yourself.

Thats nice of you to use me as a scapegoat to excuse yourself when someone backs you into a corner. Posting over and over is called a discussion which forums are for, you seem to think anyone who doesn't see it your way is a troll. Well I've got news for you, this is not Burger King and you can not have it your way. I don't care about Turbine, their games are insignificant for me to worry about them. The industry at this current time is very unforgiving, when may publishers are forced to sell their assets *cough* Atari *cough* or go out of buisness. I don't think DDO will help Atari much. As a consumer I have a right to say anything I want, you may view it as bashing but thats your problem. Regardless of anyone's opinion the facts are out there about DDO and it is subpar in many areas. To quote Levar Burton "You don't have take my word for it".
This was one beta testers opinion of this game. Check out fullmetalalc's first post. Also read my 2 posts in this thread and read his responses. The guy has issues.
all of you who wanted solo content, You never played D&D in RL. You can't solo so get over it unless you want to be Dungeon master and a player at the sametime and play with yourself rolling dice. Second, I don't want to see any of you guys who say this game sucks to come into the game 3 -4 months from now. Stay with your grind and the waist of your time. this is for the older crew who do not need 16 hours to make a tricket. Be well and again I don't want to see any of you in this game it's not ment for you

The people who complain about solo content, are the same who complain about solo content in any mmorpg. The core issue here is that this is not PnP D&D and not a "MMORPG", it's a Frankenstein monster of a game.
That was also very obnoxious of you with a slight affectation of pretentiousness to tell people what to do with their lives, but don't worry nobody with half a brain will pay $15 a month to play DDO. So you can have it all to yourself, consider yourself a hapless twit.
And what exactly is a tricket? Is there perhaps a golden tricket from the Willy Wonka mmorpg.
I wish it was just me comparing it to other games I like, but sadly the game just wasn't fun. And I am usually pretty tenacious when it comes to finding the fun aspects of games... but I just gave up on DDO... I didn't enjoy it at all. Which is a shame, since I love D&D, oh well at least Neverwinter Nights 2 is coming out soon.

The point that has been missed here is that it is just not practical to group up 100% of the time, there need to be some things that you can do solo, even if its just crafting or exploring or something.
Why?
Well as an example, I went online a week ago one evening at 18:30. For the 20 mins that I was there I was not able to find a party, even though I was flagged LFG and searching the online players etc. So thats 20 mins and I have achieved nothing, and cannot do anything by myself.
Why would I want to pay a monthly fee for that experience? The answer is that I wouldn't. If everything else in the game was top-notch then maybe I could suffer this major problem, but sadly it is not. The combat system is not for me, too fast with little chance to really use your skills as its all over so fast.
Oh and yes I did play D&D in real life, starting out 20 years ago or so with normal D&D, then progressing onto AD&D and am well aware that there was no solo content in the pen and paper version. The difference here is that normally we would only play PnP AD&D once every two weeks as a group, whereas I want to be able to play DDO 3-4 times per week or more as I am paying a monthly fee, and from what I have seen this will not be possible.

Although I have the preorder box laying in front of me I won't be activating it.
Much thanks to all the testers for their upfront views and identifying another lemon.

It's called free speech Mmm'kay, if you don't like it move to China . You've said your piece, others have the right to speak their mind and let others know. Have you ever considered maybe people like simply targeting and hitting an attack key.

In the end, I think the interviewer put it exactly right... to paraphrase:
"Do you think that D&D was the wrong setting for this game?"

Or, you know, take the common-sense, time-tested approach - and just ignore it.

lol.. Yep.. I caught that too... "Players are loving the battle system!"
Meanwhile back in the office..
"Joe.. I need to do an interview with MMORPG.com.. They may ask about the battle system.. Let's see what the Beta players are saying so far in response..."
....
"Hmm.. negative.. skip it... Another negative.. skip it... Damn.. another? Skip it...."
15 posts later...
"Ah! A positive! Great... okay.. that one counts.... Let's keep going.. we need a majority here, after all. Hmm.. another negative.. skip it...."
10 posts later....
"Ah! Another positive! Perfect! Okay.. we got our majority! People absolutely *love* the battle system!"
Joe: "But.. what about the 26 negative responses? They've been playing the same Beta as the positive ones..."
"Ahh... they don't matter..."
