[General Article] Echo of Soul: Review in Progress #1

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Echo of Soul is a F2P MMORPG developed by Nvius and published for North America and Europe by Aeria Games. It released on Steam in mid-June and actually boasts, “Most Anticipated MMO of 2015!” (for someone I assume). With high expectations, I dove into the game and here are our first impressions on the road to our final review.

Been playing it a bit and it's about as generic as it gets. It's not bad or anything, it's just not good either. It's just kinda there...existing.

This sums it up perfectly. I played long enough to reach max, ran valhalla a couple times, some of the soulkeepers challenge and whatnot, but in the end, even the endgame is generic. Just not enough to keep me around, but was good enough to keep me entertained while I leveled.

Endgame is either farming Battlegrounds or farming dungeons for gear. Do one dungeon to get its set to get high enough gear score to do the next dungeon, get its gear for the next dungeon, ect. PVP progression goes from Battlegrounds to Arena to pre-made Arena groups for the best gear.

Installed EOS through Steam, no Steam logon but that crappy Aeria system. Secondly, a trojan found in the game (false positive according to dev but they told they DID protect part of the code so you can't temper with it).  Thirdly, Aeria games flags your account inactive and you have to put a lot of effort to get it active again. This happens ALWAYS, even if you have put real money in the account and still have store credits available.

IMO not worth to try, whatever everyone tells me and how good it's supposed to be...

i got a founders' pack because of the dev team's heritage (lineage 2 developers, you'd think it would be an awesome game?!) .. i can't say it's a waste or a terrible game but no matter what you seek, there's a better game to pick.

if you want a tab targeter, WoW is better.  If you want an Anime-styled tab targeter, FF:ARR and Aion are better.  if you want a tab targeter with better story, LOTRO and SWTOR are better.

If you want action, TERA is (worlds) better, etc.

A C+ game isn't an F, but it's not the "A" that i would call Lineage 2 before the bots got hold of it.  So i'm disappointed but not to the point of outrage.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Its a easy game for some to get into. It also seems to be doing ok. Login anytime any where and you will see alot of players around. Some times easy works. Of course not for the crowd here. It may not be the best but it sure isn't the worse either. To me the big complaint i hear is the whole gender lock thing. I don't get why games do this.

It's an Asian skinned WoW clone. Played it for a half hour and uninstalled. Been there, done that.

I have played a lot of Aeria games in the past, they always end up a cash shop push around mid>higher levels.I will say i always had some fun playing their games but only until you hit that wall that makes you feel you need the CS  or forget it.

I do know this,if i see one of those somersaults or rolls,i will logout immediately, i cannot stand that unrealistic goofy looking mechanic in games. Then it is further insult to call a somersault a dodge,no it is a somersault, like in gymnastics :(.I hate it as much as when i see games give melee classes that super fast dart in move, like they have rocket boosters on their shoes or something, just so many dumb ideas in so many games.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I played EoS for several hours before giving up.  It's "generic" I suppose, but that's fine, and I found the graphics to be rather nice, provided you can turn them all the way up.  What turned me off was the ridiculous difficulty spike in the very first "solo dungeon" I encountered.  If insta-aggro mobs and running for my life are what this game has/had in store for me after about level 12, I figured I was done.

Oh well, it was fun for 5 or 6 hours, lol.

Couldn't even try  the game as Having Problems to even Login to the game --- The Blank White Login Screen which has been affecting many users --- i was unable to solve the problem even after trying several methods suggested by other users

and this game actually takes up a whoping 8.9Gb Space on your Hard Drive... going to uninstalling it and if aeria "Bans" me just because of Inactivity so be it.... lazy to play their constant problematic games

On first glance selling global chat on the cash shop looks a terrible idea. But after giving it a thought you'll realize it's a good measure to prevent gold sellers from spamming sales or immature trolls from spouting sexist/racist and borderline idiotic comments. I'm not saying it's an overall nice feature just that it has its uses.

By the time MMORPG.com finds it the game will be dead already. I've played on EU servers and that's empty aside from a couple of Russian players. On the US server there's more life, but I think the game already has peaked and numbers are declining :( Gotta say that I like the new criminal rules that were implemented last week...

I've been enjoying it.  It's low pressure (easy to learn - that's because of the genericness; and I haven't run into a lot of rush-rush-rushness), I can make progress on my own, and I've found a nice guild that lets me talk if I want to and doesn't push if I'm feeling quiet, and is helpful.  I'll buy something when they get a costume or a pet I want (I don't like that pets are bought in 30 day increments; I'll get one when it's permanent) because I make sure to spend something in games that are interesting enough I play past halfway to level cap.

ESO would be great...if it was 2008.

I refuse to play an MMO with traditional leveling and questing.

I'd question the review comment about the leveling skills varying a bit.

I lvl'd to cap as an Earthguard, and it was just rounding up mobs on my mount then spamming a "smash ground" skil. (it was so dull I've forgotten the actual name of the skill).

I must have done this for north of  30 levels. I've no idea the actual number of times I must have hit this smash skill - hundreds.

I may go back to the game to check out end content, but the groundhog day leveling has parked this game for a while.

EOS is a hidden pay to win. All games from aeria are like this. At the End-Content you have to buy Safeguards to get the maximum gems and Appraiser Pouches to get the best stats on an item. Of course they tell you, you can get all this in game, but that would take ages and i am talking here about several month, not weeks.

Friend of me liked this game, so  he started to buy alot of Shop Points to buy Safeguards and Pouches. He has spend around 300 Euros in this and still not all of his equip hat +12 gems and just around 80% of his Equip has max stats.

If you are looking for a "Let it Play, and have 1-2 weeks fun and do some PVP" Game, EOS is for you. If you want to Play it compeditive, with the best possible stats you have to invest month of farming time or a shit load of Money.
