Console could benefit from a chat window or a chat app/web page even that players can log into and watch chat either from a smart phone or pc or both and have the option to leave chat on in game too even though typing with a controller is slow I know xbox lets me use my smart phone keyboard I would imagine ps4 does the same.
Update - Actually with a new perspective, it is rather unique to have an mmorpg without a chat box . you litterally have to speak and immerse yourself into the game.

Yes we would not be able to type and controller at same time, but what a chat window does is open up another line of communication. Once established then yes I would opt for group chat with voice.
Although not having a chat box can be viewed as adding to the game as well. You literally have to speak to people to find what you need. It's really the essence of immersion at that point. This is something only available on console right now. I didn't think of it this way until now.
Think about this though, this is a unique feature to not have a chat window and force the user to immerse themselves further into the game in search of what they are after.
I actually think using a tablet or phone as a chat window/keyboard is a good idea. I could use something like that in PC games even.
Why wouldn't you be able to use it? Sure, maybe you couldn't run around and type at the same time unless you can text with your toes, but it's better than nothing, and it gives you a nice area to see the chat log if nothing else.
Yes, DK changed my perspective with that comment. Is it bold or is it an experiment? They could always add chat but at this point why?
Leaving the chat out actually adds to the game from certain viewpoints.
The ESO chat app will eventually force Zen to put the chat in the game, but for the time being enjoy the chatless experience, it is rather unique for mmorpgs
I think the console set up for communications in ESO is pretty amazing (in a good sense). Not only does it add a certain sense of immersion (I realize it can also detract from immersion in some ways), it also really suits the typical set up most console gamers have- which doesn't include a keyboard or need to mess around with a smartphone to type things in game.
Like many things in ESO the devs appear to have had a vision and have stuck to it, even though that vision might be different from what mmo gamers have come to expect to be the norm in an mmo. Very admirable imo.
