While the sun was burning outside, i installed the free trial last night and played a few hours, it got my conjurer to level 11 so far...

- story is starting to draw me in, there are some voice overs now, but most still seem missing.

- i dont mind the slow combat, but definately hope mob ai will improve at higher levels

- actually the caster feels like a caster, which i like.

- most side quests have no umph, and are a little boring

tomorrow is another day, lets see if the story keeps me interested. Because that is currently the only attraction i have to the game.

Story's pretty great on the whole.  As you level up and do more main story, you start to get more and more respect and get assigned to tougher missions and involved in political intrigue.  A lot of realistic traveling as well, which I personally like even if people think they should've just put in a mechanic that avoids such.  Also, your friends will likely ask favors at times, as well.  But the game makes fun of itself occasionally as to why an adventurer of your status does some errands for friends.  Even makes fun of people who want to skip to the end when they just started in patched content.

Side quests are mainly just there for experience, though they try and do so with relevance to the area.  Side Stories are also in, but they're mainly max level.  Such as Hildebrand (remember the name and look into it when you're level 50 -- it's 100% just story with no real rewards, but funny).

2.1-2.2 story content isn't that great, but it really picks up and becomes all Games of Thrones like after that.  Which transitions into a darker themed expansion.

Let me know if you have any questions or need advice.  Make sure to do your daily roulette for a substantial experience boost every day once you get access to it.  There's also a party finder system in the party finder button to the bottom right.  If you have an urge to do some FATES for experience or Grand Company seals (to increase your rank and get items from them, or get your chocobo), the party finder will likely help out.

The crafting's pretty great and fairly complex.  In 2.0 the best crafters had everything maxed and cross classed a lot of the best skills from each craft.  This enabled them to make HQ high level items.  Plus allowed for new rotations.  Though gear is also important for crafting, and make sure to try and keep up with the storyline that each craft gets.  Might be difficult around level 30, as you'll need to locate or acquire HQ materials to make HQ items, unless you manage to get a hold of one yourself.

To unlock classes beyond your first, you need to finish the level 10 quest for your combat based guild.  They will then give you permission to join other guilds -- the crafting guilds included.

Note that you might not have access to the craft you want immediately, due to the physical location of the guild.  Might need to finish the level 15 main story and unlock the airship pass before you can fly towards the city with the guild.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

    Lord,

Yea I am not into the Quest at all in this game other than the Crafting Quest.  Now the Storyline I do like.

Question for you.  Did you by chance create a Character on Siren?  If you Didn't no problem and I know your in the EU.  I was going to say I normally play about 7pm ET to 10pm ET not everyday just 2 days or so a week, But weekends Friday  7 - 10 and Saturday and Sunday I hop on at different times during the day.  I would be up for tanking for you if you were on Siren.  I know it might be hard to do with you being in the EU however just offering a helping hand.

Also on Ragnarok ticking along with the free trial.

So far im only lvl 8 but quite enjoying the game so far. However, I agree that the questing already seems boring, too much running around for no reason, aka busy-work and it was hard to get into the game initially with the awful intro quests and the significant time lag before you get to actually fight anything.

Also agree on the casting, playing a caster as well and it's kinda fun.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

Taking it day by day, almost level 20 now on the conjurer. The mainstory quest is only at 14 as i am leveling way to fast only doing mainstory quests and the ,but  the classquests are also telling a nice story... Still.to bad that most of the voice overs never made it in English. Good voice overs would have put the whole stories a level higher.

somehow, i keep getting the feeling of playing an old fashioned MMO like eq2, which is okay with me. The game feels kinda comfortable now, like wearing an old ragged coat on a chilly autumn morning... The world feels nice now, just like a final fantasy game should feel holding the middle between a fantasy world and a childrens fairytail..its a world i can enjoy and relax in not taking things to serious.

i am taking it step by step, ten days left, going to invest some time in the gladiator to see how melee plays in this game, and to see how much different leveling is witouth main story quests...

just wondering if its possible to do the low level mainstory quests from the other starter towns on this character?

No, you'd have to make a new character, though all the other low level non main story quests are still available to you.

The first 10 to 20 levels are really just to get you used to the game and it's systems it will pick up after that. Voice overs are only on main scenario quests. No all quests have the voice overs. If you do go ahead and subscribe sent me a msg on mmorpg.com and I'll send you a friend key. You will get some bonus items that help with early leveling

Once you do a quest thats it you cannot do them again.  Also The best way to level alt jobs/classes is get to 15 with Levequest and fates then at 15 start doing instances.  You will level fast in instances.

That's pretty much the best way to take in this game.  Many come in trying to replace or compare it with another MMO.  Though if they want to replace something, then they haven't let go of it and everything will seem lackluster no matter what it is.  This game is about the narrative and depth / complexity of systems as well as substantial updates to content.  They built it in such a way that 2.0 content is still relevant in 3.0 as well.  I've played other MMOs just out of a lifestyle, trying to fool myself that I was having fun playing the same one for ten years.  Just laying back and accepting another and taking it slowly, reading as I lay back and sigh happily, it was a breath of fresh air as a whole.

When it comes to Gladiator / Paladin, they are probably one of the more boring classes in the game 1-50 at the moment.  The animations do not flow that well with the GDC and some of them don't even do damage, which feels boring as a whole.  It's a tanking class, as well.

I'd suggest Monk or Ninja or Dragoon if you want to try melee in the game.  Monk and Ninja are fairly entertaining 1-50 and Dragoon becomes more entertaining at level 30 when they unlock more combos and such.  Their abilities flow well, have off gdc attacks and haste effects.  I'm a fan of the combat in the game, but Paladin is the only one that I believe is dreadfully boring.

It's not possible to do low level story quests on a different quest in other starting areas -- you'd have to make a new character to see that story.  It comes together at level 15 and you get the same story.  But they do give you +100% more experience for other classes -- it is what makes FATES and Dungeons so efficient in leveling once you level your first class.  Though there is quite a bit of other things to do to mix it up if you're not in a hurry to level (even Leves help 1-15 if needed, as well as Hunting logs).

Played a 2nd class to 15, just exploring the country side of the 2nd area, it just took a few hours... Doing side and class quests, fates and guildleaves and trying to find the mobs on the hunter list...  Thats enough diversity when not being engaged by mainstories..

now i just started a culinarian, to get a taste of the crafting, i am only level 5 and havent read anything about the crafting system, but so far i can imagine of it turning into a system alike to vanguard... We will see..

next up is leveling a 3rd class in the third town, strangely i am looking forward to it,

we will see, ..... Still 8 days of trial to go..

maybe i should look into the price of the game and its expansion packs.

I have been on a hiatus from this game. The whole game is awesome sauce, but I keep wandering looking for better combat elsewhere because that is what I care most about in my mmos.

I would get the game and expansion packs if you are enjoying yourself. From what I gather, the storytelling has improved quite a bit post patch 2.3. This game is one of the few triple A mmos that still has strong grouping being at the forefront and gets more content at a faster pace than just about any mmo out there.

All dungeons have a preliminary quest which will usually take you to the entrance.. Most are via Main Story but some are side quest related. From the sounds of your story progress you'll be ready for your first one soon. Enjoy!

Forgot to say that once a dungeon is unlocked you will insta-port into the dungeon when the duty finder has the required party.

You can also use Party Finder to make the group on your own server first before you Queue for the dungeon.  Party Finder is a good tool.

Conjurer is one of the healing paths, and is definitely not a damage powerhouse.  Judging the combat mechanics based on a solo CNJ doing the level 1-10 content is certainly not going to give you a picture of the game as a whole.  Keep in mind, each class has unique strengths and weaknesses, and play style for each class will vary greatly.

Hiya, another trial player here. Some initial thoughts:

-Game is very pretty to my eyes. Performance is a world better than when I tried out the original.

-There are a LOT of various things to do to gain XP. Main quest, side quest, leve quest, guild hests, dungeons, FATEs... It's quite refreshing.

-Being able to do multiple classes on the same char is amazing. I always felt like it would suck somehow.

-The game is very polished. Haven't seen any bugs yet. The only thing is that there seem to still be remnants from when you weren't able to jump (invisible walls and so).

-I don't mind the combat. But so far warrior combat > paladin combat :)

-The game IS very quest heavy, with a lot of cut scenes and the like if you are following the main quest. You gotta get into that or it'll feel slow quite fast. I'm one of those sick basta**s who enjoy grinding and usually dislike cut scenes. Now, the story has actually started to grow on me, so we will see!

Overall a very positive trial experience, looks like I'll be looking for some FC within a week if I can find the time :)

Speaking of the trial is there a way to get a trial account w/o reinstalling the entire game? I am a former ffxiv:arr player and still have it installed (slower internet and a pain to redownload). I've been tempted on trying a trial account to see if I have a feel for the game again before I dump expansion, sub fee, and retainer fee's to get my account running again.
