So will this game be what they promised?

MaurgrimMaurgrim Member RarePosts: 1,331

I've been following this for on and off since well first I heard about it but kinda took few steps back when alot ships were on sales but no real gameplay footage besides the arena mode and hanger.

The game sounds awesome if they can deliver it all but I dont see how, they have promised sky high on things I dont really see how on earth they can release such a massive feature list no matter the amount of money they got for shipsales and crowdfunding.

I really hope they stay true what they promise so they dont pull a Peter Molyneux on us.

I learned my lesson with FireFall.  Went into CBT with something fresh with a crafting system that was really deep.  Then it launched as something bland and homogenized.  I'll believe it when SC launches, other than that it's all marketing gimmick to me.

I think they can deliver something interesting. Even now, you are able to play a fairly revolutionary flight simulator, where most of the flight is computed dynamically.

What scares me is the fact that there seems to be a lack of communication when it comes to the difficult questions from the community (while there is lots of communication regarding ship sales). I was watching the project closely and think many of the concepts were not fully thought through - not only gameplay concepts, but pretty much everything is being constantly adjusted on the fly.

Also, there feels to be lack of content creation. Perhaps it is too early in the development to consider that? But looking at Elite Dangerous, it may be the case that even if we get a space simulation with interesting features, there will be a serious lack of content.

I have my fingers crossed, but feel it will take at least several years until we get any sort of playable, somewhat persistent experience. It seems unrealistic they will meet the deadlines they set themselves, or even miss them by only a couple of months.

A few thousand dev answers = lack of communication ? And only roughly 10 % of these answers are about ships.

I've pretty much decided they are modern day snake oil salesman.

They got the cure for everything and it only costs ya $60, $140, $300, $1250 to have this miraculous cure all.

I don't think they'll deliver on any front

No. It's a Chris Roberts game. Over-promising and under-delivering is his modus operandi.
  • wandericawanderica Member UncommonPosts: 371

I dunno really.  I pledged for like a 60 dollar package a long time ago.  My thought then was that I'd buy it when it released anyway, so I might as well pay that money now.  Lord knows I've wasted more money on dumber crap in my life than tossing 60 bucks to a company I wish to support.

As for whether it will come out?  Of course it will.  These forums in particular seem to have taken a fairly polarizing stance on support for this game.  Some of the concern is justified, some of it is born of outright misinformation.  The Devs, and even Chris Roberts himself, have been pretty transparent about the state of the game and schedule for release, so I don't understand a lot of the "It's a scam!" type feedback you see sometimes.  Do keep in mind, it is still pretty early in the overall scheme of things for SC compared to your typical concept to launch timetable for MMOs.

That said, I do agree that selling more and more expensive ships for a game that hasn't released yet is bad form.  It is not, however, indicative of any breakdown in development, breaking of promises, or of a future failure to launch.  In the end, OP, it's your money.  Spend it as you wish, but I would suggest you follow the dev tracker, and some of the informational videos they release (10 for the Chairman, in particular).  A lot of the misinformation, and many other things are explained there.

Well, for one thing, it's unprecedented.  You don't see other studios smashing Guinness World Records for the most crowdfunded thing ever, game or otherwise.  If you are at all interested in crowdfunding or games, Star Citizen is something that's easy to develop an opinion on.

Secondly, the way the crowdfunding drive is set up is a bit... unique.  You have these ship commercials that seem geared to drive right to the hypothalamus of 20-something to early-30-something males, and yet you are not purchasing ships... you are making a "pledge" (toward a great cause) and receiving the ship as a reward.

I could go on, but to me the issue is not at all black or white.  I agree with the supporters that you should definitely read up on this one, but I recommend doing your own research (unbiased, credible 3rd party sources are best).  That may be a tall order, but otherwise you are going to run into some revisionism, promotional material, and propaganda (from both sides).

I don't begrudge Chris his success, but I wonder about the sanity of some backers.

Do you mean for Kickstarted games ? It is the most expensive kickstarted game. But thats all.

There were quite few more expensive games developed.

OT:  I dont think Star Citizen can deliver anything. Not in the next 5 years. For the budget they have. There is just no way they will get 80millions worth of content out. The game they will release will be nothing more than a 1/10 of what you would expect.

imo by now they promised WAY too much. but hell, if they can complete all that, this game a) needs new system and b) could rock :)

Quite a few meaning 14 or 15, out of... tens of thousands?  Millions?

It may be true to say that it's not the most expensively developed game of all time, but it is in the top 0.1%

Nope. I'm having doubts we'll ever actually see half of what they promised. I really regret having donated to this project (and it is a donation, not an investment). I think Chris Roberts will disappear right after they ship whatever half-assed version of a game they end up with. Probably will scoop up whatever dough is left and go make shitty movies again.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

Indeed, I am also a victim of the Firefall Syndrome. No money invested until game comes out.
