Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Square Suspending Sales, Offering Refunds for Mac Version

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Square Enix has suspended further sales of the Mac version of Final Fantasy XIV and is also offering refunds to those who wish one. Additionally, those who purchased game cards for subscriptions and who are determined to be using a Mac license will have their purchase refunded.

According to the post on the NA FFXIV forum, there was a "significant discrepancy between the performance of the product our development team produced and the expectations our customers had for it, which was due to the lack of information available on our product when sales commenced, as well as other issues."

The post further states that the team had been working on performance issues right up to the Mac launch on June 23rd resulting in system specs not being released. As a result, many users bought FFXIV 'blindly' without knowing the requirements and found that, even on minimal settings, the game would not run.

Adding to the problem was the fact that a pre-release version of the game was available for download prior to the specific time designated by Square that resulted in performance issues.

The team will be working on an announcement with what specific system requirements will be necessary to run FFXIV on optimal and minimal performance levels. Until that time, sales of Mac versions of the game are suspended.

Oh man, I can imagine the type of people sitting around trying to get this game to work on their 9 year old Macs...

Bet people even took their 9 year old Mac into the Apple store to demand answers.

Have you ever seen the apple forums?  Somebody will ask a simple question and there's always some dude who's like

"PLEASE TAKE YOUR PHONE TO AN APPLE STORE SPECIALIST BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO FIX YOUR PRODUCT."

I am not sure why anyone would try to play any games on Mac.  A high end Mac is $3000 yet I can get a better computer with better specs than the Mac by spending only $1500.  SE explained exactly why other games will not go to the MAC platform and I am not sure if SE should have gone to the Mac Platform because its not worth the headache.

This is what I think of when I hear people wanting a MAC.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FpXfw0M-YI

    I WANT AN IPHONE.

    I DONT CARE.

I don't get why Square Enix would waste their money developing a Mac version. The Mac market is so tiny, surely they'd stand to lose a lot of money on development.

Ugh macs, want to game then get a gaming system. Want to edit video and music then get a mac. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, it is time mac users recognized that they just dont have the ability to game if they use a mac.

I think it's a good news/bad news story.  The screwed up in a royal way, however, they also bit the bullet, admitted, and returned the money.  They could very easily taken a different route.

Really sounds like the company has big issues with making decisions that make sense. Huge screw up on the original game. And now this.

Someone needs some oversight it sounds like to me. Just such a bad decision to go this route for such a small market...and to screw it up so bad too? True they are biting the bullet...but why put themselves in that position again?

PS3( not to sure with ps3) and PS4 API is low level, the one on Mac is not low level API, even worst then DirectX at times, until vulkan comes in to play some time later. Porting the code even after getting pass the copy right code from sony still run in to problem is with the API.

7% of the market, 60-70% of the profits. Mac is the most popular OS after windows.

Too bad the MAC 'port' runs so bad. Then again, with bootcamp on my Macbook Pro I play ff14 on high with 1920X1080 without any problems whatsoever.

and lol at snide remarks concerning Apple products and/or their customers, I thought we all outgrew that childish behavior.

4.5% of the market, and in terms of games, particularly MMO's like FFXIV;ARR, probably under 1% of the actual player base, Mac's don't do to well for games, in that sense they are much like Linux, and usually have to use 3rd party programs in order to emulate windows etc. Withdrawing sales of the game for Mac's will have undoubtedly had negligible impact, or they wouldn't have done it. image

Yes because the "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" commercials Apple did awhile ago weren't childish.

Cheers for Square Enix admitting a problem and fixing the issue. I doubt any other companies would do the same....looking at you, Blizzard.

I've never seen or heard about these commercials in all honesty, maybe they haven't been aired here in The Netherlands. Of course mac users belittling Pc users is just as childish, it just happens the other way around a lot more, especially on these forums. Me? I don't give an arse about who games on what or how, just recently I plugged in my Sega Saturn again for some good old Panzer Dragoon Saga, system or graphics mean nothing to me, its all about the games.
