No Man's Sky is the type of game I've been dreaming about since Wing Commander days. Space to planets and back again. This is a game pushing the envelope with something fresh and new. Star Citizen first mistake, not making it's own engine to achieve its vision. Second mistake, not staying focused enough and keep adding to the scope before locking down and refining the base game first.  That's how it looking, but I could be wrong, the single player for the game seems to be coming together, and if Chris gets it right  it should be a good game to play like his old games.  No Man Sky is a game that really got my interest.

You know, i read that whole blog post by Derek Smart, the entire tirade i was thinking how No Man's Sky seems to be doing everything he wanted to do with one exception, walking around in ships or starbases.

I dunno.... seems like there was some ideas these two ( Roberts and Smart) they never considered.

“Just to be really clear… it is not an MMO. All of those questions are leading toward that. There are loads of MMOs out there. People can play those. We want people to be able to get a sense of playing with other people and to see other people and feel like this is a real, live universe.

“If you want to play a first-person-shooter-sci-fi-run-around-on-a-planet game, play Destiny. It’s a really good game. Go play that. We’re not trying to do that.”

I don't really see how this would be the death of SC?

If anything is that it is possibly the hype that have become rather insane, people are buying ships for a game that isn't anywhere near releasing yet and experience tells me that overhyping unreleased games rarely leads to good things.

SC do however have a good funding by now so it will likely release at least. And I have to say that Elite seems to be a harder opponent than this, at least so far.

I never quite grasped the mentality.. X releases so I will never play Y. Especially if you like the respective genre. I've never quite found that one game to rule them all. Almost every game has unique strengths and weaknesses. A good example is open world RPGs, say The Wtitcher 3 compared to DA:I or Skyrim, Want great storytelling, Play the witcher 3, want great open world mechanics with open character creation (roleplay), Skyrim, want a blend of the two? DA:I...

Is it just me or are these star citizen doom and gloom posters just getting blatantly ridiculous? I am no SC fanboy, but damn guys get some freaking logic to your opinions on the damn thing.

NMS is a lobby-game like Destiny while SC will be more of an MMO.

I actually thinks No Man's Sky and Elite: Dangerous's concept has more in common and in more direct competition than SC.

SC is actually not very much about exploration at all as the known space in that game is not going to be infinite like No Man's Sky and Elite: Dangerous.

I actually think No Man and Elite are basically going after a similar concept, except for the fact that No Man chose the path of developing detail planetary landing/atomspheric flight mechanic first whereas Elite chose the path of developing politics, galaxy and the space element of the game first.

Not an MMO. In fact, they didn't even make it capable of showing more than one or two players at a time.

You could not be more wrong on all these games. Go educate yourself then come back and we can talk about that foot in your mouth.

    • NMS is open world, it's pretty much the new definition for open world.
    • SC is a single player campaign game first. A MMO is planned but as so many things in SC that are planned i wait until it's actually done.
    • Destiny is part open world/maps and part lobby.

I would say no simply because of the psychedelic graphics they have went for.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

I agree. My favourite is how everyone resorts to calling anyone else talking positively about something a fanboy or white knight. Meanwhile, there are all of 2 or 3 people driving the doom and gloom train. Pot, meet kettle.

I remember looking over there were 3 games competing here and No man's did look pretty good.

There is a LOT more than a simple request of say walking around stations or planets,it comes down to how well that is done.I don't like cutscenes to do actions in a game, they are only good for movies.Example i don't want to have a cutscene entering my ship or walking around in it.I want Space Stations to ALWAYS look different from each other,i hate copy paste in games.

Yes most certainly i want a player/character and i want to have a home of some kind and clothes/gear weapons.

However i want even more which is why this genre is impossible to do in a Triple A fashion,i want eco systems and several planets,i want a different economy say at various Stations and planets,i want different tech from various races etc etc.It really is a genre that takes twice as much work as a Fantasy game to pull off and imo NONE of these guys most definitely cannot pull it off.

So what happens after the skies clear is you wend up with games that will struggle to take players from EVE.What i see happening is MOST of those CSI players/supporters are Eve players, they will try and play both, they will not leave Eve,too much time invested.SO for competitors they will likely have to come out before SC and hope they do well enough to keep them from going back to Eve.SC is doing one thing  that separates them, their ship sales will likely lasrt a LONG time, players are foolish spenders like that,so even though players might not play much of the game after a few months, they will keep making money on ship and peripheral sales.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

We are talking about 2 games that we differ one from the other like Obama from Bush. So no NMS will not kill SC, greed is going to kill SC.

Dunno how SC is, but the gameplay introduction video I saw of NMS didn't scream space sim to me, very lightweight game, except for the vastness of the space. No sim features, quick jumping from planet to planet, arcade controls. Collect pretty aliens and collect coins... Also didn't see there's much of the EVE style social/PvP/interesting economy/logistics/scamming stuff.

NMS is not a space sim, it's an exploration sim...and it's not really multiplayer either. It's going to be pretty niche in the end.

Well considering that one game is not going to be done anytime remotely soon and the other game doesn't even look like much resembling a game yet that anyone can discern what the point is...I don't think it really is something that can be even remotely predicted at this point.

Lets first see if Star Citizen ever gets released or if Robert and his wife will buy a tropical island somewhere and live on the money for the rest of there days.

Otherwise I don't see Star Citizen and No mans sky competing for the same playerbase except that they are both games in space.

They are sure to be great games both of them even if I think that Star Citizen is just alittle bit to hyped and could tank when the players aren't getting exactly what they want.

Personally I am going for no mans sky because of the exploration.

As good as NMS looks for what it is, saying that it'll be the death of SC makes about as much sense as saying Mario Kart will be the death of Grand Theft Auto.

NMS is a solo exploration space sandbox whose claim to fame is a humongous procedurally generated galaxy with a story line that takes you from the edge of the galaxy where you start the game toward the center where some "ultimate truth" will be revealed.

It looks very good and should be a fun game. But the only thing it has in common with SC or Elite is that it's happening in space.

No, it's not an MMO... not even multiplayer anything, The only community-related feature is that if you get to a planet first (there are literally billions of them) or discover a new species first, you'll get to name it and that will be uploaded to a shared database.

If you didn't get to that planet first, you can still explore it with everything in that planet still there just for you. You'll just have to live with the fact you'll be exploring someone else's Pen15.
