Best evidence it's all time low for gaming in general...

KopogeroKopogero Member UncommonPosts: 1,685

For me it's:

"4½ years exact since I've spent $ on a new game" DCUO launched Jan 11th 2011 (purchased for $35 with promo and 30 days free). This is the last time I've spent $ on a new game. My gaming history goes way back prior...Start gaming since 1990, NES, SNES, PSX, Dreamcast, LAN PC. Got my first PC end of 2001 and first games I recall buying were Star Craft and Ultima Online after receiving invalid key @ Walmart for Everquest. So for 10 straight years since I never purchased a console and been enjoying so many PC titles.

As thread states what is the best evidence (in your opinion) that gaming is at all time low today? For me 4½ years of not finding a worthy product to spend $ on. I also wonder what kind of games we would/could have today (vs what we have) if majority of other gamers refused to open their wallet as long as I have. The way I see it it's PvP war between consumers and producers.

I think the F2P concept has emerged primarily from gamers like me, so consumers are desperate to lure us toward their products, but was this truly the right approach to make me open the wallet? It clearly has not worked in my case...

You been posting here all this time and only been playing F2P games for free, with out spending a dime  ?

The all time low for gaming in general came in the sixth century AD when the Roman Colosseum was taken offline.

More seriously, your post is about what you're willing to pay for, not about whether there are good games available.  For me, the low era of gaming since I was old enough to care came in the late 90s, when the big rush was to make everything 3D, but developers hadn't yet figured out how to make controls useful for gaming or even make it look as good as 2D.

Your $0 is countered by people like myself who've easily spent ~$1000 or more during that time frame.

While we're definitely moving through a turbulent time right now, I don't think it's entirely doom and gloom. I've played a lot of games in the past 4.5 years that I've really loved.

There are actually some really good single player games out there.  I haven't tried an MMO since ESO (which I cancelled fairly quickly).  I find MMOs today fairly boring.  I think The Witcher 3 and Grand Theft Auto V are two of the best games that have ever been made and I've also been playing since the days of IBM PC XT, Atari, and Nintendo.

I think part of the problem with this age is there is just to much entertainment.  There is no time for repetitive MMOs.  I rarely repeat any games or re watch movies.  Everything is a dime a dozen most of the time.  It comes, goes, and then something new replaces it.

MMOs seem to be doing fairly well and so do single player games.  Digital content is one of the industries that is making large quantities of money.

I would say you are just not interested in MMOs and what they have evolved to which is similar to me.  I doubt I would even play an old MMO if it came out today.  I wouldn't want to spend the amount of time required to advance.

My low for gaming was when i took a 2nd shift job and then realized I can no longer game prime time, which means no raiding or even RP guilds for me.

Since you contribute nothing to the scene to move it forward or in any direction for that matter, your opinion on anything in the scene means 0. Its kind of like the rule that you have to vote to be able to bitch about stuff, this is pretty much the same thing here.

I think Flyte27 kind of tickled the OP's problem a bit, but did not actually account for the OP's changing tastes directly.

I freely admit that the first couple of MMOs I played were the best there've ever been. I don't even need to say what they were because no MMO is likely to ever capture my interest and imagination the way the first ones did, even though they are dogs by modern standards. I'm older, much more experienced with life, I've played a dozen or more MMOs since, been bombarded by ever flashier media, and there's simply no way to ever experience again that first thrill of entering and negotiating a pixilated world. It's sort of like wanting to relive a first kiss, just ain't gonna happen. Quality of MMOs, past and present, is uniquely relevant only to the individual. Endless discussions about the sad state of MMOs today just seems like a worthless enterprise.

If you really want to know what the best MMO is, ask someone who's played only one.

    Wow.  Just wow.

I feel completely the opposite.  In fact, there's so many good games worth playing that I have a hard time deciding what to play next most days.

Witcher 3, for instance, is an astoundingly good game.  So good that I want to play it a second time, but I don't want to burn out so I'm waiting for a few DLC's to be released.

I'm also into racing simulators.  DIRT3, iRacing, Asetto Corsa, Project Cars... I never have enough time in the day to play all the games that I want to play.

Kopogero should have renamed the title 'Best evidence it's all time low for MY gaming'.

I'd argue that gaming is bigger and more popular then ever.  The sub-culture of gaming is becoming more and more prominent in society.  Twitch has taken off.  Console gaming is very strong and healthy.  There's multiple gaming companies and its easier then ever for indie developers to enter into the market.  E-sports is a thing. Mobile gaming has exploded in popularity.  F2P, P2P, and subscriptions are all relevant and successful.  Yep, gaming is fine.

  • MoiraeMoirae Member RarePosts: 3,318

Umm, anything Bioware (except SWTOR), Skyrim, The Witcher 3, most stuff by Bethesda...

It's a bad time for gaming period? I beg to differ. Single player games are better than ever. It's the MMO's that are having a serious problem.

If F2P suddenly went away you'd see him spending money quickly. :P

And instead of being happy that he has the option to be a happy little leech, he spits on the companies providing him with free entertainment.

I think he's trying to say that he has not been inspired to spend money. The thread poster feels nothing is worth spending money on I guess. I have to agree with my other colleagues on this one. He needs to spend more money on evaluating games to give a more honest opinion. Not a lot of money but there are times you have to fork out cash to get a better sense on how the game is suppose to feel and play long term.

Skyrim, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, Bastion, Dark Souls, Witcher 2/3, Dragon Age II/Inquisition, Rayman Origins, Mass Effect 3, Dishonored, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Far Cry 3/4, Torchlight 2, Halo 4, Diablo III, Journey, GW2, Borderlands 2/pre-sequel, Dragon's Dogma, Darksiders 2, Hotline Miami, Dust, The Room, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Metro: Last Light, Tomb Raider, Rayman Legends, XCOM: Enemy Within, Injustice, Telltell Walking Dead/GoT, Rogue Legacy, Destiny, Dying Light, Pillars of Eternity.

If nothing there is worth money to you OP, then either you're too frugal or gaming isn't your hobby anymore.

As Play For Free (P4F) gamers understand it,  this is what F2P is for.  As I have been saying for years, P2W = wanting to spend money.  Any other claim is a lie.  The term F2P does not entitle P4F to all feature, services, content, and balanced game play.

What makes F2P not worth paying for?  Making them P4F friendly.   No gamer should want to play a game for free.  After 30 minutes or less every gamer should be running to the cash shop to spend money.  Buying so called P2W should be accepted and expected.

When devs have to make something free, they make it crappy.  You get what you pay for, when it's free.  Devs should always make content, that should be paid for.  That is how you get quality product.  Not when it's free.

F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

Many, many really great games have come out in the last few years, I will refrain from doing another list and it might be missing the point anyways since OP seems to only talk about f2p games / mmos?

I will side with Moirae. From 2002 to 2010 I barely played anything other than MMOs and actually finishing a singleplayer game was a hard transition after the MMO well ran dry for me. Since then I have enjoyed tons of great singleplayer games but there is always this lingering feeling of "what now?" after each one.

I am not sure if you are happy with the f2p mmos or not, but this is THE best time for gaming by a wide margin. The deals on great games 6 month to a year after release are incredible and we have even become jaded by bundles that offer great games for a few dollars (if that).

I remember your thread about this being a great time for a great new mmo coming out, but these things don't happen instantly and the industry is still reeling from the "copy wow" craze. Wildstar came out a year ago and is already old news, partly because it had been in development for 8 years. The new wave of Kickstarter mmos won't come out or be polished enough for another 2 years.

Right now is a great time to take a step back and enjoy some of the other genres gaming has to offer. Or play FFXIV. But that would require spending money.

Feel the same way.  Everytime I see one of these gloom and doom threads I have to believe these people have grown out of love for gaming.  Problem is not enough time to play all the games I want to play.  I haven't even touched the Witcher 3 yet because I am waiting for a Game of the Year Edition with all the DLC.   So many games , so little time.
