[Dev Journal] Gloria Victis: Exploring the Combat System

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

As an MMORPG set in a medieval world, Gloria Victis must inevitably focus on combat. The main idea was to base it on player skill instead of the character’s statistics or equipment, contrary to the classic MMOs. To achieve this goal we decided to use a Non-Target system, so the player has to manually aim their attacks at the opponent at the right time, from a proper distance and direction, adjusting the strength of a strike as well.

Hopefully they add in some directional melee combos when they upgrade melee.

This is going to be a nice pvp game, look forward to more of the game world being added.

There is a PvE side to it aswell with a cave network full of skeletons, forts and bandit camps. There is world bosses that spawn at certain times aswell. All kinds of npc roaming the game.

    Nice write up.

I've been following this game for years now, I'm looking forward to it more than half of the AAA garbage that has been and is going to be released recently. Combat is a key thing for me and I often check new gameplay videos to see how far it's progressed. It still needs work, and I'm sure it will get it, before I delve all my time into it yet though.

Best of luck, keep up the great work!

    Incoming fail train.

When will developers realize that making (PVP Centric) games super skill based only appeases the hardcore PVP'ers and alienates the money makers which is the casuals?

Well fortunately this game is made by Polish studio, so the upkeep will be way way lower than usual MMOGs. So even niche bunch of hardcore pvpers will be able to fund this game for a long long time :)

As an EQ1er PvE person at heart I think you would enjoy the freedom provided in some of these PvP centric (but still have quite a bit of PvE) games such as Darkfall and GV.  I played Darkfall UW and loved it despite not really enjoying PvP and not having much PvP skill.  The freedom from being ordered around by an NPC really was unique and has been lost with the linear quest hub themeparks of recent years.

I wish GV the best.  It still needs a lot of work and the combat system is a major work in progress.  I look forward to the finished product.

I agree, but PvE and PvP are two TOTALLY different animals.

PVP games need people, 100% NEED people to be around to be fun.  Its not fun to PVP against the air.  And if you make the game too hardcore, you alienate too many people.  Darkfall succumbed to this.  PvE games on the other hand aren't as big a deal.  As long as you have enough people online for a group or a raid, you're good.  You can all find each other in the world, meet up, and slay a dragon.  In a PVP game you could all be running around in different zones and never see each other.

    Pure skill based pvp?

That won't attract the mass of pvp gankers hitting on low level players just outside starter zones.

They'll post on here about how good this game will be, then go back to one-shotting newbs in their current gank fest game.

That's nothing against this game. I wish it all the best. MMO's do need variety, and this game offers something different from the go kill xxx mobs. I just wonder how popular it will actually be if lower levels can really beat higher level players based on pure skill.

I really should patch it up again and have a look. I backed this because it was cheap and promising but i kind of thought they cannot pull it off. By now this shapes up to be an incredible game. Having high hopes by now!

As long as the PvP is not about gankfeasts it will be worth checking out, but far far too many gankfeast games has been made and done poorly already.

The problem with most pvp centric games is that they have yet to find a ruleset that allows decent pvp without making the less skilled just plodding targets.

Darkfall only failed because of lack of content it had nothing to do with being a gank fest

And thats actually a good thing :) GV has a specific community where you wont be able to find people like " hey noob Im pro and silence I kill you". GV is directed mostly to mature people who appreciate real gaming instead of just pressing buttons without any thinking. Well, all  I  can say Gloria Victis is for real players -  those casual and  hardcore killers!

I really hope it succeeds. PvP should be about challenges based on player ability, not zerg numbers on the field

    - or lvl 40's waiting outside Eltnen (Aion) to one shot lvl18's,  then repeated suiciding so they they don't lvl up into a higher area.

Which is unfortunately the common perception of a pvp server/game.

So, I hope that this game is all about skill, and then it does attract enough people to be successful.

This is what these PvP type games become.  Pass.

Hopefully it won't fall under the same fate as Mortal Online and Darkfall.

I haven't actually played it but according to the article you can charge attacks which would introduce a new element to combat.

Amen.  I played Mortal and really enjoyed it, though I get frustrated with PvP very quickly.  Though this game looks intriguing, I am going to stick with PvE-centric games.
