I understand with everything done to him why he is pissed, it probably would of been better to not post anything cause it made it worse. Dealing with people over the net is a little different than dealing with someone who is up in your face.
This whole thing goes back to when they were with Sony right? What exactly caused Lizard Squad to go after Daybreak.. I can't recall what this started over.

Let your lawyers and PR people do the talking.
No excuse for the kids that did this, they should be held accountable, and I do agree, those that are minors the parents do have some share in that accountabilty.
But yeah -- there's a reason you hire lawyers, and that's to speak for you.
People behind this will be picked up eventually. It takes time. I hope the parents are held accountable as well. I hope Smed puts so much financial burden on them and their families that it crushes them. The equivalent of the damages they cost Daybreak.. No one has/ should have the right t to damage, hurt anothers property. Legal ways to protest without hurting property. Maybe even people if any personal info got stolen in conjunction with the attacks.
Edit to add. In my opinion swatting should be attempted murder charges. Those that don't know what swatting is. look it up. Twitch streamers have even been swatted while streaming. Not a dam thing funny or noble in that at all. Having your door kicked in and guns in your families face.
1. The US and Finland do have a cybercrimes treaty (most countries do these days besides the normal suspects like Maldives andnthe like). This includes extradition for charges. 2. Finland only usually blocks extradition in cases where the death penalty is on the table, and will continue to fight until the prosecutor removes it as a possibility. There is obviously no chance of that here. 3. Since there are no set international double jeopardy laws, he can and probably will be charged with any crimes committed affecting US companies or citizens. 4. Calling in a bomb threat carries a 20 year minimum federal sentence. Since the charge will more than likely be aggravated, it more than likely will carry a life sentence. 5. This is just an interesting tidbit: a few weeks after SOE was hit the first time, an FBI cybercrimes sattelite office sprung up in Bend, Oregon, not far from what is now the Daybreak campus. Coincidence? 6. Their real worry should be their idiotic claim of belonging to ISIS. That makes every LS member considered an enemy combatant by all UN participating countries. Add to that terroristic bomb threats, and they'll be lucky if they're ever seen again.
Knowing a lawyer is useful sometimes. Not just when you're in trouble lol
I sympathize with John Smedley for no one deserves that kind of harrassment he went through, no matter how bad of a person we think he is.
The hacker surely needs to pay dearly for his crimes, and 2 years suspended sentence is not much, I agree.
Having said that,, the way Smedley dealt with the whole issue shows once again Daybreak CEO immaturity and ineptitude, the same "skills" that drove SoE to the ground.
This guy simply is not fit to lead a big company, I've said it many years ago when I predicted that he would bring SoE to bankruptcy with his lack of gaming vision.
His lack of wisdom is evident in the way he communicates with people and his latest rant is a good proof of it.
His sentence against the hacker parents had me in stitches for the sheer stupidity of it.
In none of the 256 indipendent countries parents are responsible for their kids crimes, and that includes places like North Korea where you are shot simply because your factory hasn't produced enough lobsters for the "Supreme Leader."
If parents were to be responsible for all their children crimes, we would have to convert half our Hotels into prisons in order to accomodate all of them.
I wish the hacker gets what he deserves, a very long prison sentence.
But at the same time I would like to see Smedley take a leave from the gaming industry (early retirement?) so we are spared his random and often offensive (to our intelligence) rants, and who knows, Daybreak might be able to produce a good MMO which is not aimed at 10 years old kids for once?

While it is a fact that the parents cannot be held CRIMINALLY responsible, they can be found liable in a CIVIL matter. And consideringnthe projected lost income caused by LS, it could end in liens and jail time. A lot of countries imprison those who cannot/ will not pay judgements. Add to that, some countries could technically make the case that the parent's inattention to what their kids were doing was negligent, making them accomplices after the fact. I've seen lawyers use some serious mental and law gymnastics to bring charges, with the hope those charged will plea down so they don't have to try them for tenuous charges.
Good old Smed... Open mouth, insert foot... Given his "I'm coming for you" remark, if something happens to that person, Smed would be the obvious first suspect. But then dear old Smed has never let common sense get in the way of one of his rants.
What next? Is he going to pick a fight with Anonymous?
Originally posted by Torval I'm on Smedley's side here. What those people do shouldn't be tolerated. These guys have hit other companies than DBG (and the former SoE). Exactly, any old time to bash on Smed though... some simply can't pass it up, even if it means siding with cyber terror...... They called a bomb threat into the plane he was on for %^&* sake. To blame Smed for retaliation over his words is just asinine, he has every right to voice an opinion on the matter. Anyone in his position would, yet because it's Smed, the usual suspects must have their show..
No one is siding with Cyber terrorists.
Everyone seems to be in agreement that Lizard Squad needs to spend time in jail for their actions and nothing they are doing is to be supported.
However, that doesn't excuse John Smedley from the consequences of his actions. He is the CEO of a company and everything he publically does represents and can effect that company.
His choice to go taunt Lizard Squad is having very profound effects on the company and customers he represents. There will be financial losses due to his choice to rant on twitter. Notice how not one single person is surprised that Daybreak servers were immediately hit by DDOS attacks in response to Smeds rant?
Notice how no one is saying that they are surprised that Smed did this?
Pointing out that Smedly is an idiot for doing this doesn't mean people support Lizard Squad.
A man is an idiot for taking a stance to defend personal attacks against his life & family?
Sheesh, some of you guys are the biggest [insert slang term for felines] I've seen. Then again you've probably spent most of your natural lives stuffed in lockers and various garbage recepticals.
This wasn't a minor verbal/keyboard spat between 2 parties. This was an over the line attack. It's a form of terrorism and the purpose of terrorism is to use fear to push the victim into submission. Why the f#%k would any non-coward encourage submission to an act of this nature?
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
Sorry to re-post this question and point, but it is pertinent to this sentence...
You really believe some peoples game time is more important than bringing awareness to how detrimental these acts are, as well as bringing greater punishment against them?
If all you have to worry about is essentially time in a corner and a smack on the behind, what's to stop these attacks from increasing? The punishment for it is nothing more than what a teenager gets for coming home too late.
What is happening to Smed on a personal level from these hackers sucks and they need to face criminal charges for their actions. Examples need to be made so that others realize there are life altering effects to the choices they are making.
However, Smedly isn't leading some cause to bring enlightenment to the hackers. He is the CEO of a company and his job is to run that company as best possible for the owners and his customers. He really isn't in a position to decide that he can rant on twitter about something that personally involves him and put his company at risk and forces all his customers to suffers the consequences as if they are part of his cause or support his actions.
The amount of people in here cheering for these little shits is baffling.
This place really is a cesspool.
No, you got a guy here that is proclaiming to be nr Knowitall where it comes to gaming, made (gaming) life miserable for many of his customers and many fmr customers have a very bad taste when you bring up the name J. Smedley to them.
That is not for no reason.
Then you have him again, years later, still same behaviour, did not learn anything from his behaviour, hosting games again and taunting hackers.
What do you expect other then making him shut up?
Noone is justifying the fraud those hackers did, For all I care they give them 30y behind bars. But many see the humor in them saying to Smedley:

It isn't like Lizard Squad is going to stop hacking or the courts increase the punishment, because J Smedly posted 140 characters lashing out at them.
What happens if Smed gets fired as a result of his actions and their consequences to the company? Will he tell his kids he lost his job, but Daddy really flamed the hackers good on twitter and now they wont bother their family anymore?
Smedleys actions on Twitter is cool, if he has the backing of the company and the law, and it was done as an attempt to draw them out and to track and trace the origin of the DDOS attack. Smedley would not be able to listen to the conversation between him and the airline CS agent if the law was not helping.
I do not mind downtime of these games if it helps in stopping this DDOS activity once and for all.
If Smedleys Twiiter comment is just a rant, then not cool

they will be caught. always are the passed few years. Especially the ones like these who do so much out in the open for attention. I just hope they get financially destroyed in the end. Damages they cost this company would be enough to do that. No one has a right to destroy anothers property or hurt others ever and nothing justifies it. All people should be able to freely speak their mind even if not a popular opinion. Doing this sort of stuff over a gaming company?
Those cheering these idiots on are stupid. These are the types of tools that steal databases and sell your information. Or for that matter just release the database to the public. They ruin lives, literally. What is noble in that? They don't care about anyone they hurt. Swatting alone should land this group in high security prison instantly imo. Would be awesome if they spent a few years in some place like Black Dolphin Prison. that place looks like it would break just about anyone except the insane. Being broken and rebuilt isn't always a bad thing. the process sucks but outcome can be really positive, though really negative to I guess. I also think it should carry over to the parents if they this groups consists of minors. No way they don't have some sort of an idea if they live under the same roof.
