Nintendo has issued a brief statement to the world indicating that its president, Satoru Iwata, has passed away at the age of 55. Iwata had been in poor health for the last year or so, but we are saddened at the news of his passing.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth .

Our own Bill Murphy says goodbye to the legend...

I don't agree with how some of the Nintendo games changed over the years but this is sad and bad news indeed.

I feel much the same way. Regardless of anything else, he was a force within the gaming world and the games that he has been involved with over the years have helped to shape our beloved hobby; gaming.

    Rest in peace, Iwata-san.

Being close to 54 myself this type of news scares me. R.I.P. Satoru. Nintendo 8-bit was my first real gaming systems... lots of good memories.

Rest in peace, sir. You've done wonderful things for so many people, and you brought video gaming out of the dark ages and into a golden age.

Very upsetting. No reason not to cry over somebody who influenced your life so very much. I still weep over the loss of Harold Ramis, and Sir Christopher Lee's recent death was also a bitter pill to swallow. I know God had a reason to call them home, but even knowing that is of little comfort sometimes.

My thoughts and prayers to the loved ones he left behind.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

Bile duct growth.....so, cancer? At 55? Damn.

I just bought a 3DS a few weeks ago. I'll be marathoning FFTA2 with a tear in my eye.

    Arigato, Iwata-san.
