Why do people use stupid names?

The name you choose in an MMORPG says everything about who you are.

I also blame the game designers for coming up with really rubbish random name generators. Often I try use the random generator and get a name that is already in use. Thats just dumb and careless design and programming.

Why do people do stupid things ?

... do I really have to explain that one ? Because they are STUPID !

If you're that worried about someones handle on the internet then you need to find something more constructive to worry about. There is people all over the world right now who are being murdered, raped, killed. Kids dying. People starving. Countrys at war over stupid things and your worried about some guys name in a video game? That's sad.

I'm kind of beyond labeling people on there username over the internet or in some chat room. I could careless because it's childesh. If they are caring and nice people thats what I grade them on. Not some trvial nonsense as to what username they have.

"Oh look he chose trash656 as his name! What a nerd!!! huhehuhehuhe *snorts"

Those people usually really don't give a shit about the game or being immersed in it. As sad as that might be for people who are trying to do just that, forcing immersion on someone is also impossible.

Most of those players show so little interest in the game that they're not really worth playing with anyhow in my experience. Though there are always exceptions though; mostly people who genuinely think they're uber witty.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

    Better question might be:

When is the last time you saw a company pay a significant staff of people to do name enforcement?

That's CS staff, and they're the very first people to go when the money gets tight.

We got a Conan Schwartzenegger in the MMO I play in, but at least when he is talking on TS he does a absolutely perfect impression of Arnold lol.

Most players with names like 744trybdffbfdf are the 'gold' sellers and bots. Standard on ignore.

Plus it is a reason I used to go for RP servers back in the days, not a RP guy myself but over there you had to pick a decent name and ppl could report you for using awkward names. Before devs sold out and allowed everything.

In City of Heroes and Villains silly names worked because of the costume. Although there were quite a few  inappropriate ones like the guy who was made to look like a shocking pink penis and he called himself the Terror Shaft. There was other very well done costumes that poked fun in general like the guy who had things growing out of body called Failed experiment 69 and so on .It does work the names depending on the game. Another guy who was dressed like half woman and man who called himself Confused Cindy.

I'm more curious why some people take things that don't matter so seriously.

I agree. I know a lot of heavy RP players that don't care.

Also judging people by their name is also a strange notion. I've come across more ninja need looters in games where the players name is more lore friendly.

Have you now? As well as why do you care that we care?

Could it possibly be due to the pointless drama and disharmony this kind of septic elitism causes in the online community?

    This.

For me, it's like someone complaining that a player in game has dyed their boots a colour they don't like.

Dumb player names don't annoy me as much as guilds with stupid names.  I hate it when a 400+ member guild has a name like "Fuzzy Otters" or something like that.
  • AkulasAkulas Member RarePosts: 3,029
Made a joke name nutsonyochin for a game I wasn't expecting to play for that long. Then became a part of the community and it was decided that I got a free name change which normally cost some game tokens to nutsaboutchillie. In that case it's because I thought I wasn't going to stay around for very long but although it got changed to  a better name I still think it's a silly character name.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Lets just hope he's actually written "Schwarzenegger" because otherwise fail big time.

Oh, and theres nothing wrong about "Conan" in the first place. Except envy that he managed to reserve such a great name.

Now Conann or C0nan or xxXConanXxx would be stupid names, but theres nothing wrong with the original.

I guess I've been playing MMOs too long; few names bother me -- well, maybe the ones alluding to body parts normally associated with procreation or suckling the young, but such is the price for existing in communities with such varied player types.

I'm currently playing a triple-A title with a subscription model. I'm also on an RP server. I've seen very few idiotic names and no gratuitous profanity whatsoever. Very pleased.

Whats funny for me is if you can't take the time to come up with a real name i don't want to group with you ever. In Star Trek online some people really give their ships the dumbest names i've ever seen.
  • CrescendaCrescenda Member UncommonPosts: 24

Some things I've learned in almost 15 years of doing MMOs:

    1. Players' notions about humor vary wildly -- one person's *funny* is another's *stupid.*

    2. Some people have no imagination whatsoever

    3. Some players simply don't care what others think about them (nor should they)

    4. Many players approach MMOs the same way they would play pinball -- who cares about immersion?

    5. Still other players are more concerned about getting attention than in playing a game

I'm sure there are thousands of other reasons why players give their characters absurd names. The thing to remember always is others don't play MMOs for our amusement -- they play for their own, whatever form that may take. Therefore, being overly concerned with character names in an MMO is probably a huge waste of energy on any level.

I was a teacher -- History, not English; still, I don't even want to suggest how often I'm put off by poor grammar choices and inept spelling. My tongue is permanently calloused from biting it. But I've long since come to grips with the fact I don't want to be the grammar police. Neither do I want to worry about silly or profane names.

Or you could do like in the real world and allow duplicate names.  Databases have had to deal with that for decades.

There you go, they just keep track of your characters by your account number.

The real question is how do friends lists work, tell/reply systems, etc... Unless you use account name for that, yet then what is the point in names if we can't identify or communicate under them? I don't want to send tells to Alias@567.net.. that would be even worse than the issue the op is pointing out.

Would that be too difficult for you?   What if you had 7 jenny's in your smart phone?  How would you handle that?
    I don't see the difficulty.

OMG there are 7 jenny on my friend list in the game.   Oh wait, the jenny I am interested is standing in front of me.  Right click and take an action.   Oh wait, the Jenny in my guild is online...  or  Jenny the dwarf.   Or all the Dwarf Jenny's in the guild are on right now->  Well a note field you create or nickname or something else to clue you in like character creation date or date you met.  Etc.

Is it really that impossible for a mechanism to be created?  Are players to lazy?   Is it better to only allow one name on the server?   What are we, attention hos?

Tell me how difficult it would be for you to manage this crisis?

We had a database for Illinois where 3 people with the same exact name lived at the same exact address.  The information that made them unique was their dob.  Obviously three generations of men.  Grandfather, Father and son.   It isn't difficult.

Don't forget about "Dauzqul"! Now that's a stupid name.

You really have no room to talk when it comes to names.

I didn't run into many until I played Darkfall.  It was some immature unwritten rule to come up with a really lame joke name.  The problem was very few were actually funny.

I never said I had a cool name. However, at least it fits the scene...  unlike PoopyPants.

    Nice chipmunk name, btw.

Because anonymity is a fantastic thing. Welcome to the Internet. Some people don't care about Nicknames with a deeper meaning about their character.

I hear ya. It especially  burns my biscuit on the RP servers. Seriously, why roll a toon with a ridiculous name on an RP server when you just know someone is going to report you for it? The Rift RP server used to be a happening place for RP. If someone marched up to an rping group with the name "DuctTapeSupaStarr" or w/e, all hell would break loose. I don't know, maybe I'm biased because I love to roleplay in MMORPGs.. but seriously, this toon represents the player for a few months or years (depending on if they stay or not)... Do they -really- want to be SilverFartBubbles??

SilverFartBubbles :-)  Okay, that got a chuckle.

Sometimes I wonder if people really understand the idea that the character they play in an RPG isn't them.  I mean how many times do we hear "I'm a level 58 Paladin"?  No.  You're a guy at a computer.  Your character is a 58 Paladin.

And what sort of self respecting Dwarf who has worked his way up in the ranks to become a Paladin would call himself SilverFartBubbles?

Maybe I'm being picky, but it's almost like this should be explained in the tutorials.

Normal person + anonymity + audience = immature moron and/or asshat.

The names are just one of the many hints of that fact.

Yup, that about sums it up !
