Derek Smart can't make a good game so he's jealous someone that has made good games got $85 million in crowdfunding to create an idea that Derek Smart thinks he has all rights to. So, he's jealous and is on an obvious mission to take down Chris Roberts (who Derek Smart also appears to have a two decade old grudge against).

I did not know that. Which certainly puts the whole thing in a different light. I thought the man sounded a bit too caught up with all of this. He does bring up some interesting stuff though.
Pardon me if I'm not 100% up to date with this whole charade regarding Derek Smart and Chris Roberts. Anyway, moving on.
Leaving Blizzard Entertainment to be hired by Cloud Imperium to work on SC Alex Mayberry left after 1 year, working as Executive Producer.
"After 10 years at Blizzard, I didn't think that there was anything that could ever get me to leave," said Mayberry.
"But then Chris invited me to come check out Star Citizen, and after seeing the game and listening to Chris talk about his vision, I knew that I had to be a part of it. Star Citizen is bold and ambitious, with a unique and innovative approach to game development. I am extremely excited to be joining the talented people at Cloud Imperium Games, and I strongly believe that together, with Chris Robert's direction and the support of the player community, we will set a new standard for AAA games."
All these trolls need to stop teasing poor Derek. I mean he might actually think people are really supporting him. I can't believe people would really want him as part of their cause, That does more to discredit their argument than anything any CiG/ Roberts supporter could possibly come up with. Before long he'll be signing his posts as Derek Smart, Ph.D. again.

Leaving after 1 year something extraordinary must have happened?
Or perhaps he got a better offer, or wasn't comfortable with the established system with Chris Roberts? Talented, creative types tend to move around quite a bit.
Since we lack inside information, all we can do is speculate.
But I'll tell you what isn't speculation. Mr Smarts rather "colorful" history, and the fact that Chris Roberts has gone well out of his way to keep his supporters informed.
In the midst of the operation of a very complex series of projects, he and his staff take time to explain progress, and answer questions.
This entire situation has been tainted by Mr Smarts past antics, and the hysteria of a few people, who have been whipped up by the pursuit of publicity.
What's really happening is that they're getting more advertising than they've ever had in four years. Most companies have to pay to get this much press in one week.
I'm a bit surprised that there isn't some form of accounting transparency required since they are taking public money. My worry would be the head guy just embezzling a good amount of the money putting it in offshore accounts and then just inflating cost estimates to cover the money trail.
I guess the old adage, a fool and his money are soon parted should be taken to heart.
Pretty interesting read IMO, alot of his recent post have been.
Thats what I think as well and if you look past the fact that its written by this guy Derek Smart and focus on the actual content of the article it is very interesting.
Now he is not the only asking questions and wondering about the status of the project. I think it is fair to ask questions and be cautious.
Incoming Warley amd Mr Have Fun to list a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with the claims Smart made as if it discredits him. They white knight this game at LEAST once a day. Let me give you the equivalent of how these conversations go: You say "Feeding seagulls antacid kills them". They say "Birds have feathers. And wings. And this particular bird eats fish. Get your facts straight! Have fun". See the logic disconnect?
Its crazy that people are even taking notice of this guy.. considering for the last 20 years or whatever he has been making money by selling broken, buggy over ambitious games.. sure he has some good ideas but has never been able to make a game that works.
I am pretty sure that he is just worried that people will now spend money on SC instead of buying his new broken and buggy game..
Pretty interesting read IMO, alot of his recent post have been.

There's too much noise in the discussion from people who only attack the person Derek Smart. What's left in the essence are questions from one guy, and CIG responding with giving him his money back for asking the questions on a personal blog.
All this has shown is that Kickstarter needs a way for backers to require more accountability from projects. Just like traditional investors require accountability. But for that discussion we probably need a better spokesperson than Derek Smart.

Lol yeah, how many thousands of times haven't I read similar whines on various game forums ?
"I wuz unfairly banned just because I dared to question them ! Nazi mods trying to suppress the truth, waaah, waah !"
Then you see the content of the post that got them banned and realise that any sane person would ban such a tirade of filth and insults.
Derek Smart isn't "asking a few questions". He is demanding that CIG waive their rights to privacy, that the CEO of the company must resign, etc.. He is publicly accusing the company of committing fraud. There's not a single game developer in the world that would not have banned him for that (many without even giving a refund).
To be fair, he only demanded the CEO step down after they unilaterally refunded his pledge. I believe the catalyst for the refund was the very blog post the OP links to.
In a more recent post, Derek claims to have two PhDs: one in comp sci and one in mathematics, although he doesn't indicate from where.

Two Ph.D's now ?
Wow, inbetween spamming games and lawsuits (to silence critics of the spam games), he studies as well ? Remarkable !

Interesting... you don't like his completed games, but are over the moon with the quality of what hasn't yet been produced.

They're welcome to their opinions. One thing I can agree with Derek Smart on is that people don't scare me (although I don't have a PhD).

Lets be honest folks... all this drama about the game is far greater than any gameplay experience the actual game would ever have...
And it didn't even cost you one red cent!
I'm a bit surprised that there isn't some form of accounting transparency required since they are taking public money. My worry would be the head guy just embezzling a good amount of the money putting it in offshore accounts and then just inflating cost estimates to cover the money trail.
