My only issue is the combat or lack of on the part of my ship. What I mean is for some reason it doesn't matter what ship I use it has like the turning circle of the Titanic, I can hardly ever get the enemy into my gun sights and by the time I do I'm toast. As it is I have to try and run every time I get into a fight, at the moment I am using a Cobra Mk III mainly for trading with a bit of exploration on the side, but I have tried doing combat missions using a Viper with the best gear it can carry and got destroyed within 20 seconds and not once did I get the enemy into view.

So is the combat floored or is there a specification that will allow me to fight back?

Hmm, how fast are you going? I mean lowering your speed helps you to make sharper turns.

If you fly at max speed in a combat then yes I can understand you having some difficulties.

Throttle down when doing turns and use afterburner.

    It is just basic dogfighting.

If he is too agile for you, then get a ship that turns faster or lower your speed.

    Questions:

Are you using a good engine?

How many pips are in engine?

Are you only pulling the flight stick or are you also using manoeuvering thrusters?

Depending on my combat roles (Aggressor or Defender)  I fly differently. Also the ship I'm fighting. I primarily fly a Viper. I love it. If I'm the defender trying to get the advantage I put all my power into shields and engines. And I pull tight loops and twists to get out of LOS of my aggressor so I can get the advantage.

It isn't as simple as "I set my pips and buy my gear" it takes a lot of combat knowledge to really get the best out of your ship. It's too much to explain in a forum post. But play with you pips, speed (being maxed out on the throttle doesn't give you goo manoeuvering) and using your thrusters.

To test for yourself do this:

Set engines to 50%, pull back on the stick and do a loop, see how long it takes to get an object back in sight. Then do the same thing but also thrust down. And again thrusting up. Each manoeuver has it's advantages and disadvantages. You should learn through experience.

For me a good fight is a 2 hand + voice experience. I need to use all my input options to really murder my targets. It also helps that I fly with a good wingman who also knows some aero combat tactics.

If you are having issues, then keep your throttle in the blue zone and use gimballed weapons.

I do drop my speed to turn but seem to get creamed as soon as I slow down. I even tried a Viper with all the trimmings I could fit on it for combat, had the thing shot out from under me in less than 20 seconds. What would be the best 'class' or 'grade' equipment to use for flight movement in battle?

One problem I do find using my joypad on the Xbox One is that the 'alternate configuration' button is clicking the main left stick which is used for ship flight, so when in the heat of battle you click the damn thing accidentally and find the ship unresponsive and by the time you realise you're dead.

Still loving the game though.  :)

Also what would be the best weapons to use for general combat?

    Thanks for the earlier replies.

A class thrusters help a ton with moving. As far as everything else goes, I go A class and drop cargo. Just make sure that the class weapon matches the slot.

I think i should add. Each weapon is placed on a mount which determines how you Aim your weapon.

Fixed mount: Will fire straight ahead - but do the most damage.
Gimbal mount: Can keep track of the target even when you are not pointing at it. 80% of Fixed mount weapon damage.
Turret mount: Have a 360 degree tracking system. So you can fire even when the ship is behind you. Does around 60% of the Fixed mount weapon damage.

So if you have trouble tracking targets with your ship, Turret Mounts is your choice.
