A sign of things to come?

Buddy of mine is deciding to play the game. He's been trying to register for the head start since the day the beta ended. The billing site he needs to use to do so has always been "down" for "maintenance"...days and days it's been like that. Apparently, it came up for about 20 minutes today, but went down again right before he got to punch in credit card information. From what he just messaged me...the ENTIRE ddo site is down now...forums, billing, everything.

These people can't even get the server that takes money to work right and stay up...not exactly a good omen for their ability to manage the game itself.

Everything is down because they are doing a wipe of the beta forums and tying the forum accounts to active accounts. They have posted for the last couple of days that the billing site is being prepared now to handle the upcoming load of new players registering.

I think they will have their share of glitches and headaches at launch, but so far they have been pretty communicative with the players (unlike some other game developers that will go unmentioned).

I agree it's a little disconcerting. I also realize they are transistioning from beta to live.

They shoulda been more forthcoming with a why/when concerning the billing site. I skimmed thru the DDO forums several times and the most I ever saw regarding the maintenance was "we're sorry, site down, no idea when it will be up again".

It's funny, all the other MMORPG's I've played will invariably have game server and customer support downtimes, but the billing site is ALWAYS up. They (game companies) always find a way to keep the billing working...for God's sake, we gotta keep the revenue flowing!!!!!

Hopefully it'll all get sorted out and we can quest away on Friday. :-)

DDO site is working for me, with a new design as well.. pretty... heh

Turbine billing site is working for me, same old design.. bleh..

DDO Forums are up and they're brand spanking new.. as they said they would be. And of course, they're fine.

Whew, hopefully we averted a real disaster there.

And before the OP who isn't going to be playing the game gets too distraught, we don't expect the server to be up tomorrow morning at 8am. They stated they will announce tomorrow after they've had time for a final check on the game, what time the servers will be coming up.

You know, come to think of it, SOE had their SWG site up and running days before the launch but when it came time for the launch everything was impossibly slow and the site was often timing out. So they were prepared and they had problems. How do you draw the conclusion that the day Turbine is switching their site/forums over and they're not accessible that it's a sign of things to come? THE SKY IS FALLING!! AHHHH!!! Oh wait, it's an MMO that hasn't launched yet, nm, not that big of a deal.

    so...

Well, SWG was a different animal altogether. It was a HUGE MMO. People were camping out outside of game stores to get a copy. Something like 2 million people logged in the first day alone. The place was just overwhelmed.

DDO is largely under the radar and, as a niche game, shouldn't have that kind of difficulty with regards to launch lag. But it's Turbine, so one would never know.

lol, ok, SWG was huge, not 2 million huge, but it was a large launch so I do agree there. Hopefully DDO will be small enough to avoid that but large enough to succeed.

I'm remember SOE bragging about hitting 300k with SWG in the first months. There's no way SWG ever got more than that.

Sony is notorious for always overstating x10 anything that can hype their products.    I think I logged on in the first week and it wasn't too bad if I remember correctly.   I wasn't crazy about the game but I was able to log in fine.    I know i cancelled after the first month because I thought the game was very boring.   Run the same mission over and over and over etc...
