It will be crafting with a purpose and the real crafters will have an impact on the outcomes of war, think if you are needing weaponry, you pick up a sword, but your opponent are using fine crafted armor and shields and weapons, they have an advantage then and you're probably not going to win, if only you knew someone who could crafter the right gear to enable you to counter and even go on the offensive and leave you with a better chance. Imagine now that you are that crafter and the entire army is counting on you, that's a lot of pressure but it can bring high reward or it can lead to high criticism. It's a great addition to a real immersive and passionate filled game.
Okay, now I'm interested in this game. Ever since watching season 1 of SAO I've been wishing there was an MMO where you have to specialize in a class for cooking, blacksmithing, weaponsmithing, crafting, etc. In fact, I've found that my gaming tastes have evolved to more of a gathering/crafting interest, which MMO's seem to lack focus on.
I sort of wish they were actually called "engineers". Many games emulate engineers and slap the name on a combat class that has gadgets but that is NOT an engineer.
What war would ever be won without engineers? We FINALLY see a game offering this sort of impact on real world pvp. If done right it is yet another thing your realm must defend and produce. Effective engineers lay the entire foundation for victory and combat players will owe not just their lives to them but their entire realm!
I would imagine RvR involves a lot of sieging, so you need the crafter class on the front lines to build siege equipment.
This is different from most MMOs where anybody can drop a catapult, even though logically only a siege specialist / engineer should actually know how to build and operate one. The crafter is the backline artillery guy,
The 'popcorn' crafters should be able to build basic rams or siege hammers / axes to break down doors, but the truly devastating / optimal equipment should be exclusive to the crafting class.
It also opens up cool gameplay in that keep defenders could prioritize killing the crafters in order to prevent them from setting up siege. It also prevents roving zergs who do not have crafters from easily destroying any keeps they find in a metter of minutes.
I called for help, they said they will send either "Update the Other 26" or "Playable Goblins" team, whichever comes first. So here I am, waiting in the desert, typing stuff on my phone. But hey, at least the music is good
...
PPS a random idea - Luchorpán with greenish skin and big pointy nose would look like Goblin!? (A hunchback and evil grin would help too).
Why all the gobbo craze? Everyone knows elves are where it's at...
Surely, if some humans survived the veilstorms unscathed, some elves must have too. Right??
Really though, I can't wait to see what other races they'll be adding. Personally, I'd find it hard to feel invested in the home and flavor items for something like a goblin, to live as such a disgusting creature
Your wait is over. They`re adding Humans...Humans, more Humans...and then some more Humans. Humans everywhere. Based on popular demand - I guess there was kinda official poll/survey done, and players wanted guess what? Even more Human races /facepalm. After reading that, I lost my faith in humanity.
If game launches successfully, CSE plans an Xpack named Humans Unchained with wide choice of additional Human races, while other, lesser beings, will have the option of turning into Humans by plastic surgery, therefore correcting the obvious character creation misclick. After all the surgeries are done, lesser races will be removed from the character creation screen, to avoid further mistakes.
Speaking of Goblins, you seem to think that we are some kind of animals, living in lairs? No, my friend - as an average 21st century Goblin, I am spending most of my time in my mansions and elven farms. Goblins are nice, once you get to know them. They are also cute (hint: check my avatar).
Lol James. If that's your idea of "cute", then there's a divide between us which I'm afraid we'll never bridge =x
I must say that makes me wonder what your "mansions" really are....
Are you saying they're actually adding more actual humans? Have a source on that? If so, I may join you in that facepalm.
My impression had been that it was just more human-like races. Like...DAoC Elves... I can dream.
CSE started the designs for most of their non-humans first is all. There are many and perhaps still more to come. The humans just happen to be coming last (other than Vikings). You only need to make one human as all others will be easy as they likely share the same modeling and similar animations which makes new ones easy to develop. One thing is for sure though: CU won't be devoid of non-human races. They (and Daoc) already have more non-humans races than most mmos.
I believe James is simply playing his part as a goblin and complaining. More RP than trolling. I hope anyway.
I never figured to have this game on my radar, but after reading this thread I like what I hear. This might just be what I was looking for in Repop, but sadly just didn't pan out.
A serious crafting class.........awesome!
FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

But, of course - my little Gobo RP rant was quite transparent. I am happy with the way CU designed lots of non-human races, just...adding Goblins would make it perfect! BTW here is a little note connected to that facepalm upthere:
@ astraycat Impossible, you find Goblins less-than-cute?? Shocking...anyway, de gustibus... Speaking of my Mansions, they are average five star mansions with five floors, lots of expensive stuff inside, Elven slave-servants and such. Classical stuff and a must for any modern, distinguished Goblin.
I do realize the "RPness" of Jame's rants, and I love it
I'd respond in kind from an Elvish perspective, but I fear I couldn't do it justice.
More human..ish races actually sounds great to me. I'd love to have the staple fantasy races (Elves, Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Elves...) but I'm not sure if Mark was including these in the word "human".
@JamesGoblin I refuse to indulge your crazed fantasy..... And as uncute as I find goblins, I'd love to have the chance to scour them from the earth. To do that, they'd have to be ingame, right? So I actually do support their inclusion, as long as they're not on the TDD faction
It feels odd that I should have to point out that some players actually prefer to do nothing but craft. I'm logging into EQ2 again, and I haven't quested in weeks, just decorated my house. And my guild has a new guild hall too so I'm going to start with that soon. Crafting is fun if it's done right. It's nice to see a game pay proper attention to it instead of making it a secondary pursuit.
Originally posted by astraycat I know you've said crafters won't be able to stand toe to toe with combatants, but they'll at least be able to travel the world without dying to any little mob. Do you have any idea of how much survivability they could attain? Say if a veilwalker got into a mine, would he be able to one-shot the crafters there, or would they at least be able to survive a bit until help arrived? Might 5 crafters be able to band together and kill the dirty assasin? Obviously, exact numbers would vary, and you can't say anything concrete, but generally speaking, how big would the gap be? For crafters, will stats relevant to combat improve through crafting?

"...Our next push on races will be humans because, as you know, we took a survey of our Backers, who told us they would like to see more human races..." is just one of "players want more humans, so they will get more humans" quotes. BTW the whole interview can be interesting to newcomers, recommended.
