[Column] Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft: Here's What's Awesome About Hearthstone's Grand Tournament

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Blizzard recently announced The Grand Tournament as the latest expansion for Hearthstone and there’s a lot to be excited about. Following Blizzard’s all but confirmed expansion-adventure mode-expansion cadence, The Grand Tournament is the second pack-based expansion set for Hearthstone, which means players can look forward to a lot of new cards (132, to be exact!) when the expansion releases later next month.

Tribes killed MTG for me. After tribes were introduced, with their insane synergy, no other decks could compete against them. I hope Hearthstone doesn't have the same problem.

I hope it does, as it would certainly be better than what has happened with Hearthstone, thus far.

I don't know much about MTG, but I really like playing thematic decks, so tribes appeal to me.

So much news on this game with this tavern brawl and expansion,i have to say they finally are going in the right direction and it makes me happy.

Anyone knows me i am usually not too happy with game designs ,so you know Blizzard is doing something right this time around.

As to MTG.in general they made too many o/p cards and combos, that  is what ruined the game, tribes can be a lot of fun.Example the the two decks i had the most fun ever playing tcg was in mtg with Goblins and Tog's.As long as a developer gives lots of options it works out fine, the only time i detest designs si when there are lock downs, example the other player can't play and just watches the game  unfold.

As to Inspire, sadly copied form both MTG and Hex ,none the less this idea is imo going to make a huge change to this game,we will see lots of new decks. Also some of the cards are helping to shore up problem areas, example i see Shaman "finally" getting a decent boost and aggro hunter should be solid after this expansion.

Overall there is still something lacking and that is more taunts and aoe's.However imo the most important aspect missing from this game besides multiplayer is interruption.I can't tell you how much it turns me off watching Miracle Rogue and now Patron Warrior, they are non interactive decks.one guy watches and the other guy plays out an unstoppable o/p combination.

That is why we need instant cards, well thought out ones of course not counters like from mtg.No way one player should be able to run off so many combos that the game can barely keep up with the animations, without the player having some say in the events.

This is SUPPOSE to pvp,not one player plays and the other watches. If Blizzard fixed this one LACK OF problem,i would be happier than pigs in ...well you know what. :D

No matter what i still wait for in this game, they are doing some good things because thay brought me back to the game after a 5 month hiatus,i am having some fun again.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

So if you haven't ever played hearthstone, I take it it might be best to start when the expansion hits because you might get those cards instead of what you would get starting now?

MTG was always about synergy, and there were always strong decks.

Games like MTG, other TCGs, MOBAs or MMORPGs change all the time, so it makes no sense to quit them because momentarily one aspect is stronger than others. It will change with the next patch/expansion/update anyway.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Doesn't really matter. The new cards are not necessarily better than the old cards, so it doesn't really matter when you start. Of course, when you start, the more cards there are, the more easily you might be confused, because it takes longer until you know all cards.

I'm with you on that.  Loved playing elf decks in MtG or Angel decks.  Currently in Hearthstone, I like to toy with pirate decks or murloc decks.  We need more elf cards, though for sure.  Themes are definitely fun.  Kind of wish we had more deck slots for making and saving multiple decks.  Having to remake decks everytime something changes or new is introduced and not being able to keep what I have is annoying and tedious.

I'm glad they added a new mechanic rather than just straight power creep. The new cards will be fun to try but they seem a little combo heavy.

Will this new expansion make it so that better strategists win instead of those with bigger pockets?
