Battletech is getting ready for a reboot with a Kickstarter initiative planned for later this year. We had the opportunity to interview the staff about the forthcoming project. See what they had to say.

lol That last image with the silhouettes looks like Battletechs of Draenor.
On a serious note, ill keep an eye on this game from HBS. Although i havent finished Dragonfall i really like it.
I am not so sure I think they were the right guys for Shadowrun but Battletech should be way up their alley. I do remeber playing a turned based really simple version on the Amiga way back, really fun.
This is the type of game that wins on not being too advanced, just focus on huge mechs beating the crap out of eachother and Ill be happy.
*Sigh*, Macross would have been even cooler though.
Crescent Hawks Inception I think it was called. I used to love having my locsts swarm and squish enemy infantry... splat splat splat is better than pew pew pew.
Cheers,
Something like this, I might back as a KS supporter:
- Company that has a track record of using KS successfully
- Delivered/Over-delivered on the game they promised
- Solid but neglected IP to work with
- Not an MMO
Which makes this company different from most others out there.
Yes on Crescent Hawks inception, I still had the disks (5.25) around until a couple years ago.
Obligatory TAKE MY MONEY!
I'm probably over-excited for this one. HBS has been doing a great job on Shadowrun. It originally was not what I was looking for but I came to love it. I'm a HUGE Btech nerd so when I heard that they were working on this, I about had to change my shorts. If I had ANY experience in the coding/gaming industry I'd probably apply to work there too .
Until this comes out I'll be gently caressing my Battletech books and crooning "Soooooon" to them
Just a few observations from someone who's been playing and loving BattleTech since 1984.
1) You can't ignore MechWarrior Online -they're still making a fair go of it, even if it's not everything they wanted it to be cracked up to-, MechWarrior: Tactics until it went under, or anything else that's come out. Doing that would slap people who worked very hard to put things in this universe together in the face.
2) "Although most people come to BattleTech for the ‘Mechs, they stay for the story." ~ This is very true, but the rest of the interview makes it sound like this game is just going to be another cookie cutter combat game, only minimal story -if any- involved, and I'm sick and tired of that stuff. I want a whole dog gone universe to play in. They talk about 'scope creep', and it seems to me like the top-end scope for all of these games is at the bottom end of the BattleTech universe, and I want more. I will not fund less.
3) While Shadowrun Returns was very well done, manageable for any role-player, and fun from a story perspective, Shadowrun: Dragonfall sucked so badly because it was too hard in spots. If I'm going to face off against Renraku, I'm going to take my A-game, but Dragonfall doesn't allow you to take your A-game, you have to take theirs. If you don't know how to make THEIR A-game, or you are unable to make their A-game because you're trying to play a role-playing game and not a combat simulator, then you're screwed about halfway through the game. That's not fun to me... I don't care about the heads out there who want the super-fantastic-I-need-cocaine-to-play-this-well-enough crowd... I want a role-playing game, and Dragonfall didn't even remotely touch that for me.
4) What HBS needs to do is pull their heads out of their collective fourth point of contact and build the contracting, strategy and tactics building, AI 'Mechs and everything else portion of MechWarrior Online, where the game will launch into MechWarrior Online so we can play the combat portion.
Frankly, I have had enough of BattleTech/MechWarrior games coming out and being extraordinarily underwhelming, built entirely for the bullet-heads out there who can't think two seconds past their reticule and have zero discipline for fighting a war in a massive universe where politics, civilian and military agencies and units have sway and affect the Inner Sphere wholesale with all of the various things they can do. I am sick and tired of seeing the same crap, so HBS you are hereby challenged to make something truly unique, and not recycling the same crap all the time, by recycling what was built in the books, supplements, and TROs for BattleTech before 2001, and giving us something we can truly play a living universe in. If you can't do that, you cannot have my money.
Just what we need...another Mechwarrior game.
The Battletech universe is very rich, but when Devs make plans for a game, they usually strip everything off until it becomes a plain Mechwarrior game.
There are so many RPG elements and fictional history to the universe, it would be amazing if someone actually incorporated them into a complex political game.
Frankly, yes we can ignore Mechwarrior online, almost all the people that ever tried it have.
It was 10% of what it should have been, and ended up a crappy arena shooter with a cash shop. Bad company, many broken promises, squandered time and totally shallow game. Best that it be forgotten.
Playing LAN Mechwarrior4: Mercenaries is far better and less money, too.
If these guys want to put together a good mech warrior or mech commander type of game, more power to them, maybe it will be the start of good things to come.
I would love another Mechcommander game. The Multiplayer part was very funny and exciting.
i am not sure how turn based works here though.
Is this a single player strategy game?
What are you talking about??
Jordan Weisman is the writer of the original Shadowrun Universe and Mechwarrior & Battletech RPG game systems. He's behind Harebrained Schemes. Who would be more suitable to make a video game based on it?
REALITY CHECK
I doubt it, these guys are pretty good in putting multiplayer in their games
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
To obvious, 0/10
The MechWarrior Reebot is done by Pirahna Games. Called MechWarrior:Online.
This will be a strategy game in the style of mech commander and the classic BT miniature game.
This have been a good conversation
Except it is/was terrible. Bad arena shooter with a cash shop. Bad game management, bad company doing it.
Best forgotten.
Based on what they have said, this is NOTHING like the Mech Warrior games. Seems more like a modern take on Crescent Hawks Inception as already noted in this thread. It's a turn based combat RPG game.
It won't be first person. Likely it'll be very similar style to the Shadowrun games (makes sense to base it on / evolve that engine). So again, reminds me of that old Amiga game which makes me really excited.
Mind you, I'd love a good single player 3D Mech Warrior game (MWO just wasn't it - arena shooters bore me reasonably quick), but this isn't it.
Well, as someone who hangs out ofer on MWO's forums myself I can tell you people there are excited as hell and basically chomping at the bit to throw money at HBS for this game. And as far as the art being ripped off from MWO, no. It is not. HBS have a deal with PGI to share art assets, as confirmed by PGI president Russ Bullock on his personal twitter feed.
