[Review] Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight: Bringing Back Old School Charm with a New Schoo

Cartographers rejoice! This is a game series made for you and those of your ilk. Remember the days when you would play a RPG and it didn’t have an automapping feature? Or better yet, when it didn’t have the compass and map constantly displayed in at least one of the corners of your screen? You would have to get the square graph paper and a pencil to map where you had been so you would not become lost. Well Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight brings back some of that old school charm with a new school look.

Skyforge got a 7 and this got a 7.8 lol. Losing credibility.

    Agree Nanfoodle.

0.1 away from meeting E.S.O.'s score.  As good as Defiance, yet better than Planetside 2 on PS4.  This game must be freeking amazing!

I can't believe this, the guys above are comparing a full fledged AAA MMORPG to a budget  classical JRPG dungeon crawler....

It is not  classical JRPG dungeon crawler.

JRPGs as a "genre" are known for massive focus on story, this one has barely any focus on it at all. The single player final fantasy series past number 6 are good examples of what JRPG as a genre looked like.

Japan is not known for creating RPG dungeon crawlers at all, there can't be any "classical" dungeon crawlers.

I do agree with that it makes no sense comparing two very different genres. It would be like comparing FPS with MMORPG.

Sure, classical is not the term, but JRPG still does apply especially to this Etrian Oddesey, it's got a new mode plot driven with original characters (not one you create).

Even so Etrian Oddesey still got a role playing aspect that is living through another person quests and exploration while having the staple level up, weapon/armor customization, random generated battles etc. And it's from Japan, so what would you call an RPG (be it action RPG, dungeon craweler, roguelike, simulation) coming from Japan?

    JRPG

    JRPG

The term "JRPG" existed because once upon a time the most famous Japanese RPGs were very different  in certain aspects compared to Western ones. Due to a lack of a better name to describe those differences, people simply refered to those different RPGs as "JRPGs". In theory a Western company can create a JRPG if they copy those core attributes that one once upon a time connected with Japanese RPGs.

The massive focus on story was one of the most defining aspects of those old Japanese RPGs. It was one of the greatest reason for why many people fell in love with those games.

I think you made an accurate description of this game before with "RPG dungeon crawler". Add "single-player" to that and people get a good picture of what the game actually is.

I do agree with that if we were to introduce a new term now your logic would work. An RPG made in Canada would be "Canada RPG".

So just because of nostalgia you gave this game a high rating?  Since when is nostalgia a discerning criteria?

Another bad review litters this site.

A considerable notion about using the same rubric for different genres of games. FPS games will usually have a little more action for example, so is it fair to use the same rubric on a TCG. My opinion is that mmorpg.com's rubric is pretty applicable to evaluation of all genres. Maybe they just need a little more oversight by editors and discussion before rolling out a verdict. Not that any of this really matters :)
