Hello everyone,
I'm an EVE veteran, quit on my 10th anniversary. I have been just hopping the MMO scene lately and could not settle anywhere. I know lots of people having the same issue, but I thought I ask for some advice here anyways.
an MMO, not a single player game - This is the most important feature for me. I'm looking for a game where socializing, having a friend list, grouping and making dates! matter. Also game should have a population I guess that's a no brainer.
Seamless open world. It's ok if it's tricking me into seeming seamless though.
PvP based or very challenging PvE - not WoW type raiding though. full-loot or not I don't care.
I don't mind the graphics, I prefer things to be pretty but not a fanatic about it. But I care a lot about the mechanics. I'm not saying it should definitely be very action-combaty but I like a game where skill somehow matters (used to be a Q3 pro, can't drop bad habits I guess). Settings can be whatever, sci-fi, anime, high fantasy I don't care.
Either type of monetization is fine by me, I don't care if the game is P2W, I'm not trying to be the best player of year anymore and I can support my toon to be above average.
I'm not looking for any sorta early access program.. first I have already invested monies in quite a lot of them, second I want to invest my time, so I'll be needing something not having a character wipe.
Thank you in advance.

From what you want on your feature list, now you know why I returned to EVE last year (over 6 years of total play time since 2006) and likely will never leave.
They just don't make MMORPG's like you want anymore and the fate of the genre lies largely in the hands of small, underfunded indie devs.

What's the general opinion about Darkfall?
I've also looked into Pathfinder Online, it didn't get much love from the staff here but it doesn't look very bad on paper (but not in videos)
I love to play indie games and prefer supporting them instead of large corps only to break my heart later, and I am enjoying several alpha/beta or whatever they truly are atm, but as I said I want to get into something that has already passed the character wipe phase so I can invest on my toon. Any indies out there managed to get passed that point?
Also, I'm not sure I can even think of a recent MMO that is group based prior to raiding. In fact, I haven't played an MMO in the past five years where I would want to group with anyone. Most games make it detrimental to share your quests with other players because then you have to share your rewards.
You could always try out Perpetuum, Darkfall or wait for The Repopulation.
It's a sandbox game. Steep learning curve and have a that you seek.

Haven and Hearth ftw. And dont let cute trailer fool you - this game is as deep and sosial as EVE is (and i play EVE since 2004 occationally taking breaks)
Ver 2.0 (new graphic and rebalanced stuff you see in trailer) - should be out by the end of the month. And dont let cute trailer fool you - this game is as deep and sosial as EVE. Also PVP - fool loot permadeath.

Yeah, had to kill 2 asian "friends" trying to rob me with leeches at the start of previous world. It was indeed a blast :pleased:
I am eagerly waiting for The Repopulation, been playing since alpha 1 on and off, don't want to really overplay it before launch. That game truly has potential and a nice community at the moment. Hopefully with HeroEngine 3 graphics and effects will get a lot better.
Darkfall I like to try sadly it has no trial and I am not sure if it is completely dead and empty or it has a robust player base.
Perpetuum I had never heard of thanks for suggesting it, I checked out their community and apparently there are many players from EVE and being hated direly by the others. Then again no trial to try it out. I don't mind paying for a game to try but prefer to get it down to like 3 final options then buy to try. So I'll be waiting for more suggestions till I give these 2 a try.
@ShortyBible Thanks for your suggestion. I read about it but it didn't entangle me, but I will try it out anyways.
@Hardsun79 that's indeed an interesting game. But tbh I don't see myself playing that as my main MMO, more like something on the side. The whole population online is less than what I want on my friendlist.
@SavageHorizon very interesting features, I am downloading right now. I will let you know how it went. Thanks.
Edit: @site devs: multi-quote doesn't work as it should.
The game is very enjoyable, the combat is beautiful and realistic. Also, the more dangerous of an area you visit, the better the loot. You fill up on loot pretty quick, so getting back to your clan holding is important. Your bank is safe, the items in your bank are safe. You standing in front of the bank depositing items are not safe. You crafting your next (3-5 sets of) armor at the work bench with a bag full of crafting materials are not safe. You craft 3-5 sets of armor because when you're out farming and gaining XP, it's entirely likely someone out looking for your gear bag will engage you in PvP when you're not expecting it. If you can learn to be good at PvP you can turn the tables and beat the ganker.
I'll admit, the whole time farming monsters you're stressed out. Stressed that any second you could hear a player casting spells or buffing himself in the distance. You can hear players from very far away and they can hear you. If you're farming a pit and they're running along the road near by, they'll hear the clashing of swords and the casting of spells. Fight or flight has to sink in, for you and the person on the road. If they hear someone in a pit, a lot of players turn back immediately, some come in to take the pit and your loot. Sometimes they just give you a free gear bag because they weren't as good as you at pvp.
Gear matters, there's no purples or blues. Most players keep around 250k - 1 million gold in their bank, some way more, some are broke. A full set of really good armor costs about 50k. If you buy your armor you're a noob. Farming mobs and having a clanny craft it for you basically costs nothing. You can wear a 3k set of armor while farming for the mats. In 5 hours of farming you can probably farm enough mats for 1-5 sets depending on your efficiency.
You don't just lose your gear by getting ganked. A set of armor lasts for about 4 hours of grind. It breaks naturally. If you go out ganking other players, the intelligent thing to do is to take your BEST set of armor that has 3-5% endurance left.
If you're not in a clan you will quit, very quickly. Get in a clan. Get a mentor.
Darkfall is probably the closest but it is such a poor quality game I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, DF1 felt imo less clunky then DF:UW
@Abuz0r thanks for all the tips. I will try DF, gotta see what's the fuss about anyways.
As I said, primary issue with DF:UW is imo quality, then there is another heap of issues. There is no box fee so I guess you could try it out for 15 bucks.
I'm also in a similar position as yourself hopping from game to game.
I think for me I need to try find decent guilds before I play games because I end up just getting bored of soloing
I am the Arch-fiend, the Despoiler of Worlds, and by my hands shall the false Emperor fall.
Yeah a good guild can potentially make even a dull game fun.
