Looking for a new Science Fiction based MMO

I have played EVE Online, SWG and AO but now I am looking for something new.

The choices seem slim atm. Am I missing out on any really fun Science Fiction MMOs?

Is RF Online worth picking up? I contemplated on preordering it, but EBgames (where I live) kept saying they never heard of the game. Even tho the EBgames website has it listed.

I'm tired of Fantasy based games. WoW is not so wow anymore....

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
t0yb0x

i should recommend RF Online, it has a great community and the sci-fi aspect is awesome! with the mechs and the guns, but if u dont like that u can allways go for the swords or anything, like guns are not more powerfull.. everything is perfectly balanced out.

but, if u like the *i wanna be a citizen* ascpect, u should try Face of Mankind. i played that for a while and it has really improved, like you can conquer planets with your faction, or become a LED(police officer) and arrest people if they are breaking the law. or become a mercenary and kill people for money ;)

We are seriously lacking many good Sci-Fi MMORPG's and its really frustrating. I stil happen to consider AO to be by far the best.

However therer are some others I can think of.

    Face of Mankind
    Neocron
    Jumpgate
    Vendetta Online
    Project Entropia
    Darkspace
    Saga of Ryzom (sci-fi/fantasy)

I know of a few in development but I wont mention them as they arent out yet.

lol@EBgames. Yeah if you take a look at game list, 90% seem to be fantasy mumbo-jumbo. Out of mcr525's list I'd say Neocron 2 and Darkspace are good ones. (not to knock SoR, great game, but it's not overtly sci-fi)

Well I tried Project Entropia a long time ago now. Was fun for a short time, but got boring fast.

I've been hearing/reading mixed reviews on RF Online. Is it really worth getting or would I be wasting my time and money on it? And just how similar is it to the gameplay/style of Lineage 2? I really hated Lineage 2. >_<

Neocron 2.1 looks interesting and I'm going to d/l the 10 day trial thingy.

Darkspace just makes me want to play EVE Online again. I wish there were game cards for EVE Online tho. Such a GORGEOUS game.

Not sure about the others. Maybe I just expect far too much from games lately. SWG offered alot, but failed to come through on most things. I loved alot of the aspects of that game, but with the combat upgrade it just went belly up.

Kinda waiting on Tabula Rasa to come out, but that's MONTHS away still.

Is there no love for the SF fans? What's a girl to do?!

Thanks for all the input, you guys. I'll check it all out. Maybe I'll go back to Anarchy Online.

    Cheers!

Wow Huxley looks pretty cool... The release is too far off tho.

    I want something NOW!

I just don't get why there are so many freakin' Fantasy based MMOs out there. Is it just an easier genre to work with?

There are two games I'd like to see made.
    1) Anarchy Online 2 (updated graphics and the likes)
    2) Fallout Online (one of the best RPGs i've ever played)

If someone else got their paws on Star Wars to rework it... Mmm... I know I'm just dreaming tho.

    Cheers!

There's a game called Badge of Blood being worked on. Actually it's a MOD for Half Life 2. BoB going to be more of a FPS game then anything else, but rumors abroad thatf RPG aspects may be a part of the master design.

Edit: Oh yeah, planetside is Sci-Fi.

Try Neocron, it's actually a really fun game. Good community too ::::40::

t0yb0x I've had the very same wishes....Anarchy Online 2 and Star Wars Galaxies 2! Either one of those would make me a very happy man::::31::

I only play Sci-Fi MMOGs so I'm not very happy with developers atm. The total lack of Sci-Fi games is what made me start posting here and seeking anwsers from developers in the first place. I'm hoping they'll have some really good Sci-Fi MMOGs for the PS3, but that's months from now.::::21::

RF Online looks more like a desperate effort to make money than it does a game...Flamboyant Space Elves, what a nauseating idea!::::07::

Why reward developers for lame-@$$ "ideas"? my advice would be to go back to AO...or join me in a boycott of the entire genre!

Lineage2 may be something to look at.  Since the release of Chronicle 4, a lot of old players are returning.  A month ago the servers were running at low and now they're all hitting Max around peak times.

The game rocks, but the downside is the community.  There are days i'd rather pick up my mouse and talk to it.

    LineageII | LoTRO | RFO | 9Dragons | Aion | Perfect World | Ether Saga | Dungeon Runners | GuildWars 1 and 2 | Hellgate London | tCoS | Warhammer | AoC | Tabula Rasa | SWTOR

I play star quest online. As a sci-fiction fan I was always looking for a game sort of like this though the graphics are not the best the game play is the best.

ok... time to try and rewrite what i had written. freakin' forums swallowed my LAST obnoxiously long post.

    SO!

FPS type games make me barfy with motion sickness. I can play sometimes, but other times I get ill and headachey. NOT fun.

Thus an FPS based MMO = no go for me. UNLESS you have the option to switch out to 3rd person mode.

Things I'd like to see smooshed into an MMO:

    • City of Heroes type character creation
    • EVE Online space
    • Housing/Crafting/Politics/Player Cities/Entertainment of SWG
    • Storyline of Fallout
    • Implants/Skills/Professions of Anarchy Online
    • Ingame customer service and starter help of Anarchy Online

I'm sure there are other things, but I cannot think of them at the moment.

As for Lineage2.... I played it when it first came out. There were FAR too many PKers and adena farmers to make the game enjoyable. Then there was the racism. Constant bashing of Chinese gamers. Community there was more vicious than friendly.

And for boycotting... Who would we boycott? People who make Fantasy based MMOs? Or something else?

RF Online keeps calling to me, but I have a really bad feeling that I'd end up hating myself for spending the money on that game.

Anyway, I'm sure I had a ton more to say but I can't remember right now. I just hope this post actually gets posted and not eaten by the forum monster.

    Cheers!

You'll have to wait for a year but Star Trek Online will be coming out. Also, check out Autoassault

I would recommend that people stop using 2 or 3 letters for games that are not eastablished and widely known games. Not without using the full name in the top of the post first.

I for one have never heard of a game with the letters RF so when somebody says RF online, it means nothing to me.

Not trying to bust your chops but when selling a game to somebody, you need to expect that if they know the letters, they know about the game. If they know about it already, they may have already decided it isn't for them. The people you are actually shooting for are the people who have never heard of it. These people won't know what RF stands for.

Even if the game is well known to you and all of your friends, don't expect that everyone knows about it. Granted some games are so well known that odds are that people do know about it but games like EVE and WWIIOL are good examples of games that I know about and have been around for a good long time and yet I have met many people in the game stores who have never heard of them.

Just look at the number of games listed on this site. There are a lot that have been here and are gone and there are a lot in the presently running lists and the in development lists.
