You could be forgiven if you haven't played or paid attention to Cryptic's Champions Online for a while. Heck, some of us here at MMORPG have lifetime accounts and we haven't checked in. But that should all be changing as Cryptic is refocusing in on the superhero MMORPG with loads of new content in the coming months. We sat down with Lead Designer Randy Mosiondz to discuss the new Supervillain Onslaught content update due out in September.

So how long did it take them to do this in comparison to City of Heroes?
  • IonutROIonutRO Member CommonPosts: 1
This sucks, they should have added full proper villain play, not this become pvp bullshit that will be exploited to fuck to kill NPCs and other such troll tactics.

This is NOT what the players asked for,i m not too surprised though, they seem to love to reinterpret what they hear people say into what they think people are saying, it's a dying game, and each time they "HEAR" what the players are saying it is putting another nail in the coffin,..but hey ...maybe i am wrong,..i like being wrong in cases like this, but i really don't think i will like playing there villains

"Can Onslaught get you to try CO again when it launches this September?"
Actually I went back already for the freebie character slot after the Ravenswood update a few months ago :) levelled up a new champion and still log back fairly often for a couple Alerts or playing through a Comic story.

This Onslaught however... I agree with the above, it's not CoV, and after the novelty is gone, it will be used for trolling and griefing all the time. Even moreso since they launch it on September, and the Anniversary event (the same time) is very Millennium City-focused... for me it sounds like watching a trainwreck in slow motion, I think I'll just grab a big bucket of popcorn and enjoy the show... :awesome:

This may not be the full villain-play expansion some want, but I see it as it is: a testing ground for that sort of thing. They're not going to suddenly sink a few million into a massive Villain expansion right away. They're going to try content like this, see how it performs, and then move forward. I, for one, am just glad there's a new reason to use my lifetime sub coming.

I was thinking the same thing. I had a fun werewolf guy at one time. But now it's time to start all over. Since it's golden age, I might embrace that and make a Booster Gold kind of cheesy bugger.

"But that should all be changing as Cryptic is refocusing in on the superhero MMORPG with loads of new content in the coming months." "So there you have it, folks. Supervillain Onslaught is the first of many new updates coming to Champions Online in the coming months." Those a very interesting statements. What's it based on? How is 'content/updates' defined? Is this an opinion or a statement from Cryptic? Cryptic's statements and actions have clearly led many to believe they've given up on this game.

<3 Grond randomly jumping in and stomping people, <3 1 vs many game play. I might have to check this out.

I'll try to find the news story, but basically they had Randy come back to Champions to take over design and reinvest. They even said so on the call.

Ok Onslaught Devices sound like something I could really get into. However....only one device a day? That's unfortunate seeing how the transformation is only temporary. I am a lifer on CO so I am definitely going to redownload and check it out!!

This sounds like it could be fun. I don't get where people are saying it will be misused though. You might not be able to target npc's. I don't see them letting that kind of thing happen. I could be wrong though. I still login to this game and no matter the time of day their are a lot of people on. The game might be died on this board only.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they should do a CoV-esqe version out of the blue (but it'd be great  ) and I used to like world boss type of fun (especially in TSW, but LotRO's roving threats are nice too). It's not even the pvp part, afforementioned LotRO has it too with Rangers.

But  (since there's always a but)

Unleashing it in the main hub where everyone's hanging out from level 6 up to the cap, even moreso during the Anniversary when even those are coming back who are leveling in Canada or the Desert - a recipe for the perfect (troll) storm  . Only imo, of course.

edit: great idea to start a new character, the tutorial and the intro part was revamped with Ravenwood and it's pretty cool now. I was a bit surprised (when I went back) that the crafting is totally different now, so I ignored that part so far, and just playing the Comic stories. Btw, with Alerts you can level up now very quickly. Booster Gold is a funny one :)

This was just posted by a game manager on the CO boards. We've taken steps to minimize the possibility of griefing. Nobody can be targeted by player villains unless they attack the villain first.

Champions is ok I guess, but... I will always have fond memories of CoH/CoV.

  • LeperDaveLeperDave Member CommonPosts: 8
And... Champions Online again misses the mark. We want to play villains, our villains, not your villains. Is it any wonder I can't spend more than 15 minutes in the game at a time?
  • NathanorNathanor Member UncommonPosts: 1
Oh good Champions is getting some love. =) This sounds like it might be fun, I rather be my own villain but this will do.

You guys... (snort) all you lifetime subbers.. they flubbed this, they flubbed STO... and the lifetime was the kick in the nuts.  Games like this are a good reminder why you should NEVER LIFETIME SUB EVER.  Which is a shame because with games like LOTRO, I kick myself for not doing it.  Games like this?  Not so much.
  • TamanousTamanous Member RarePosts: 3,030
I had the coolest damn alien looking dude in that game. So sad the game was pretty much forgotten and never launched with much of the promised content. Some love for it will be nice.

    You stay sassy!

This game is still around!?! Wow! You learn something new every day.

I've got a feevah, and the only prescription... is more cowbell.

Not the best news, this is not something that will get me back in the game. Now letting me be my own villain i would be playing it again. Probably a wasted opportunity. Still have fond memories of CoV (damn you ncsoft).

I dont pay that much money (lifetime money) in advance for any game, but if i had to do it for one mmo it would have been TSW. Too bad Funcom is having a tough time right now so its not even worth the risk at this point. Why buy a lifetime for Lotro when it has just a bit over a year left before shutting down? Or have Turbine/WB confirmed they will renew the license again after it ends in 2017?

In general, lifetime is a good deal most of the times, if you like the game. As for the actual examples:
LotRO doesn't offer lifer anymore, and those who have it, already got back way more than it costed them. (as a rule of thumb, lifer gets better and better as time goes, the early buyers have the entire game for that initial purchase 7 years ago... that's less than 30 bucks for a year's entertainment). On a sidenote, they already said yes earlier to the licensing issue.
TSW is the same, the early jumpers already got back the initial cost. You can buy a GM anytime, there was a sale 7 (? I guess) months ago, it was a pretty good deal. On the other hand, TSW's lifer is only good if you really like the cosmetics, because nothing more is in that ;) (maybe the convenience that you don't need to purchase the Issues by hand every time)

Ikeda, those are not flubbed... CO was a pretty cool game at launch. I totally understand if someone jumped on the lifer train (I didn't, because I'm a hopper, so wasn't in game more than a couple months a time before switching onto an another  ). It was a good deal, after 2-2.5 years it earned back its price. The offer is still available (there was a -33% sale on it not long ago), but currently I don't think it worths it... actually the sub was discussed a month ago (http://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/436419/is-this-even-worth-a-sub-for-a-coh-vet ) and lifer is not much more than a regular sub...
STO, on the other hand is a different beast  the lifer option is still available, and actually is a really good deal if you like the game, because STO has pretty cool veteran rewards, and lifers are catapulted on top of the veteran list right away.

I played 2 years full time, so I would say my life sub was actually worth it. It's still nice to go in on occasion and check out what's going on. I will probably always life sub superhero games whenever available. I am a lifer on DCUO too...got a ton of playtime out of that one. Don't play anymore, but it's still nice to have the option.
