Quests but they do not suit all MMO's that well. But as a questing fan I have to vote for them. When Op says XP what does he mean?
By XP he means standing on a spot mindlessly killing enemies over and over, grinding experience/levels without questing, just killing.
Not ready , in newer games , there are many ways to get XP beside killing and quests . Just quests give move XP and have faster level progress speed. So my question is player do quests because they want to enjoy the quest or because they just want easy XP that give them faster progress in level and get to end game faster .
Thank for a lots of interest answers. The question hit me when i saw players start to grind instead of questing when the exp from monster get raise . Most of players skip the quests and just rush to easier way to get the exp. Though there are a lot players enjoy quests , but major of them just grind if the exp from monster higher than what they normal get from quests. Then i though that " wasn't we just want easy XP ? "
Then it lead to "was we do quests to enjoy the quests or just because we wanted easy XP ?" As you see there are many problem as we design quest in order to give easy XP to player , the quest mustn't hard (to be solo-able) and must have a lots quests to feed player until the search end game grind . It lead to the problem because the quests become easier , the time player spend leveling using quests is meaningless (IMO).
In same time because the need to make the quest solo able (for XP) , there are many limited put on how much hard one quest can be.
People tend to do whatever i the easiest and fastest way to get to the levelcap, may it be dungeons, quests or mob grinding. They rarely do something just because it is more fun but if they don't enjoy the fastest way they will quit instead of trying a different way to play.
Certain people do prefer constantly being told what to do but if they find a faster way to level they will do it anyways.
Just to offer a different point of view on why people might sometimes rush / grind content, rather than do whats fun.
Progression is fun. Leveling up / acquiring new gear / getting new skills offers a (false) sense of achievement when playing MMOs. Its not necessarily about reaching the level cap in the fastest way, its simply enjoying the feeling of getting more powerful and so you search out quick ways to progress.
Then there is the social element / competitive element. For example, when WAR was first released, I split my time pretty evening between pvp and pve during the leveling process. I loved seeing all the different orc and dwarf zones and fighting interesting creatures as I'm a warhammer fan, but I was playing the game for pvp. However, when I reached tier 4 (lvl 32?), it suddenly became very noticable just how much difference there was between myself at 32 and those people maxed at 40. So, rather than split my time between pvp and pve, I basically powergrinded the last 8 levels so that I could be competitive again and get back to enjoying the content I liked best.
I'm not denying that there are definitely a lot of players who just search out the fastest way to level cap, I've certainly done it before in games where the leveling process sucked (swtor), but there are a lot of other reasons why people might want to speed up the leveling process.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
I play for fun. Like Skyforge my MMO for now. I find fights and dungeon crawls just awesome in this game. So I keep playing but I find the story and quest so sad I dont take time any more to listen. Space bar is your friend. Now SWToR was different, I found the story and quests down right awesome and the combat was just ok. So as long as I had story I kept playing. So what do I want? Fun! I dont care hows its packaged, quests, dungeons, crafting. You make it fun I will keep playing.

Smoking isn't fun but people do it because they get a nicotine kick from it at first and then they just get addicted. The same thing goes for leveling but the problem with that kick is that it is very limited since you level up pretty fast and get stuck at max level soon.
That certainly is a part in the whole thing and one of the reasons new games can't keep their players anymore.
MMOs need to be able to provide you a reason to stay long term or there really is no use for the devs to keep making them, all that could be achived in a far cheaper single or multiplayer game.
Also as been stated earlier in the thread do a lot of people quit before they reach even max level, MMO gameplay needs to change some way or another. Instead of bribing you with a level or a kick playing needs to be rewarding in itself, that still happens from time to time but it is become more and more rare.

It depends.
1) Some people want to level as efficiently as possible so
- if a game has low mob exp and high quest exp then they will use quests. - if a game has high mob exp and low quest exp then then they will grind mobs.
2) Some people want to play through a connected story like SWTOR in which case
- some form of quests are necessary as chapters in the story
3) Some people want to create their own story in which case
- the quests need to be optional - which means mob exp must be faster than quests - which means quests can give other rewards like one or more of: cool story, coin, faction, gear, secrets etc
Personally - the first kind of quest bores me rigid - the second kind are okay sometimes depending on how well they fit the overall story - i like the third kind
Depends on many things. It's not as easy to say. Sometimes questing is quite fun, other times it's mindnumbing. Same thing for killing tons of mobs. If a game's combat system sucks and the game is mostly focused on killing mobs, then it's a no go. Sometimes an awesome storyline can carry a game...
Basically I don't know. The MMO that I enjoyed the most and it's my all time favourite invented questing! So I guess I tend to like questing. I wouldn't play something like EQ1 e.g. While grinding mobs in a group may be fun, I noticed that often you either don't have the time for a group or it takes too long to get going.
I am playing EQ2 progression server now and questing in that game is mindnumbingly boring. The only acceptable way of levellnig for me is with vitality and in a group in a dungeon. Everything else takes forever and is boring as hell. However, I noticed I often log in, can't find a group for like an hour, then most of my playtime is over and I log off without having done anything.
So yeah it depends on how it's implemented.

No, no, no. Stop with the whole logic thing. It's either grinding mobs or grinding quests. And we need to have flame wars on whiich is better
