Not surprisingly VR headsets as part of 3D porn packages are selling out around the world.

    Voted "No.  Definitely not."

Others may be playing with VR, but I will pass on that fad.  I wear glasses.  I enjoy my peripheral vision.  I type looking at my keyboard.

I am just not built for VR usage.

I will be purchasing one or more very soon. The HTC Vive is already planned into the budget.  Online gaming will happen soon after I'm sure.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

I do not believe head mounted VR (the Oculus type) has any broad and lasting appeal. It is just too hardcore and extreme to completely lock yourself out of the real world like that.
Glasses or some kind of see through VR head mount might be possible, as to still be present in the real world ... more like AR (Augmented Reality) based tech.
But what I really think is the future is holodeck kind of systems and 3d holo screens. In the near future it will be screens able to display themselves on "any" surface completely replacing tv/monitors.

I already play some online games with the DK2.  Most of you seem like you're unaware of new VR headsets.  There are multiple consumer versions coming out in a couple years.  These will be leagues ahead of the current prototypes, and some will be smaller and less bulky like the Oculus Rift DK2.

Here's a list of the upcoming headsets.  http://heavy.com/tech/2015/07/best-vr-virtual-reality-headset-glasses-goggles-oculus-rift-specs-review/

But VR is old news.. it's all about Augmented Reality now. https://youtu.be/AMH38h8g9MU?t=2m20s

I voted no, definitely not.  While I do think it will be an option to do so, I won't be wearing a headset with a screen(s) that close to my face.  It's bad enough wearing headphones.

this sums up my feelings, especially the part about wearing glasses.

A lot can happen in 10 years.
    VR...
    maybe cybernetic augmentation...

If they push those stupid 2 handed game controllers as hard as they are now.   They're going to fail amusingly, despite how good the rest of the experience is.

Your own shit always smell better, and the media is in the business of selling views(meaning they'll sell what the developer things it smells like rather than what the media think it smells like).

Who's going to care about hair when we will be living inside virtual worlds, with endless hairstyles?!

Do you mean like this controller?

Another thing I was thinking of is if MMORPGs will be developed to exclusively support VR display and specialty input, or will they try to merge it in with normal keyboard, mouse, monitor in one title.

Not merging sounds like market share suicide.  Merging sounds like one seriously clunky UI.

10 years ago people were thinking that's where we would be in ten years time, so no. But in thirty years we might be "jacking in" with any luck. :)

I don't understand the fascination with VR as far as gaming goes. I see its potential as far as teaching and simulation tools are concerned, but i'll pass on wearing more shit on my head when i game.

As usual, I am shocked by the lack of knowledge of some people on this subject.

    • No, it will not damage your eyes, no screen does no matter how close it is to your eyes. Screens can cause eye strain if you stare at them for too long without resting now and then. Eye strain however, is temporary. Just take breaks now and then and VR wouldn't be any worse than any other monitor.

    • They are being made so you can wear glasses with them if you want, some may even come with a variety of lenses to use directly in the headset. So those who wear glasses ... don't worry about it.

    • 90s VR is nothing like the VR that exists today. I don't even know if you could consider what existed in the 90s as VR anyway. Putting screens close up to your face isn't really VR and that is pretty much all they did in the 90s.

    • Motion sickness is most certainly still an issue, but not nearly as much as some people here seem to think. Games made specifically for VR are less likely to get you sick. The reason many games today can make you feel sick is because developers are still figuring it all out, what to do, and what not to do.

    • 3DTV ... the experiences are very different compared to VR. Just because you wouldn't wear glasses for a little feature like 3D, doesn't mean you wouldn't if it meant experiencing something amazing. I am sure most people here would at least give it 5 minutes if they were able to try it. However, I doubt anyone would stop at 5 minutes.

    • The headset is not so heavy to cause neck problems. It's a non issue.

VR is the future, and for now headsets are the best means of accomplishing VR. It's the logical next step in gaming. Those who say they will wait until some matrix crap ... sure you will. Just like those people who didn't get a TV until HD came out ... oh .. wait, that never happened.

When an experience is nothing like anything that exists, and it's an experience that is fun and entertaining. People tend to settle for it even if it isn't the absolute best possible yet.

I played low resolution Descent with a massive heavy VR headset way back on a pc around 1997. It was brilliant fun, very immersive and I used my keyboard. The only problem was the headset was so heavy I couldnt play too long. I thought back then it would have been popular by now but it was expensive, clunky, the quality was only as good as the times and people were very turned off by that.

In my opinion when Occulus have this ready, if it is light and comfortable enough, if it can be used wirelessly or relaxing back on a chair, the controllers are intuitive, if they get a good price point and if they can even have a few games written for it at the time and let it be adapted to other games, and if it shows movies as if on huge screen with headsets that can emulate surround sound well, then yes these will take off in my opinion. The thing is until you have tried the experience you wont be able to make a fair judgement and those poor arcade 3D simulators (using headsets) were worse than crap compared to Descent in VR even in 1997so I wouldnt recommend those arcade simulators are anything like a true experience.

As for augmented that is for other applications but if you want to have a game in which your senses of sight and sound are fully immersed as if you are there then you need it to be shut off from the real environment. There is a time for everything and much  technology was long conceived and even produced long before it was widely accepted including smartphones and tablets. The best fun I have had is watching people make idiots of themselves in arguments by just being unable to have vision or having an open mind.

I already have neck and eye issues from old age, not to mention the occasional headache.  Know what I say?  Bring on the VR!  I have been playing video games on a 2D screen for the past 35 some odd years, give or take a few.  I'm ready to take things to the next level.

Regularly? Depends on the hardware needed.

However to just play one within the next ten years? I'd be very surprised if everyone here hasn't tried it by then.

For me, most likely not.  At this point in time I really have no desire to even try it, so if MMOs start requiring it in order to play then that will most likely mark my end of gaming (at least games that require it.)

People seem to think VR is ok for everybody.  Its not.  The older you get the less likely you will be able to use it.

In a fast action game I would definitely not be using it and I bet the percentage of people that would, would be 25 % or less.

If it were just about walking around and enjoying the scenery then, yeah, it might be tolerable for awhile.

But VR is not a universal gaming adjunct.  There are many who either can't use it or do not wish to for various reasons.

    Its niche, like OWPVP.

I do need to ask ... exactly what makes you think this? How old are you even talking about?
Also ... a fast action game wouldn't work well on VR, at least not like what exists today. Ever play paintball? I think it would be closer to that.

Something you need to remember, it may not always remain a niche. Gaming in general used to be a niche and so did MMOs. Look at them now.

It all depends on how well it works and whether or not it offers a compelling enough experience to warrant any negatives it may have. Personally, I think the only legitimate threatening negative is motion sickness. However, that has been solved for most people anyway, and it's still getting better for those who do get motion sick.

People who talk about having to wear a headset as being the factor to stop them, I think they are underestimating the experience it gives you.
