The Otherland Online team has posted a great new video to get players hyped for today's commencement of the early access program via Steam. Early access packages are available from $19.99 up to $49.99 with various in-game perks included.

Just a hunch. But i think that they figured to use early acess to make quick buck before the game closes. because for long time it looked that development is going nowhere, and than suddenly this appeared.

Seems like an interesting concept with the different worlds and all.  But, there is 0 chance I buy into early access for this. No way.

It's a class based game in an era and setting where classes are on the way out. Sorry but not interested.

Don't really understand the interest in paying for a half finished game that might never get beyond that stage.

I liked the book series, but not sure the developers have the skillsets to achieve their goals.

Lots of cut-scenes in that video but very little actual gameplay. I'll wait and see what others are saying after the launch.

What replaces classes as a dynamic?  Not-classes has been the not-answer so far, and it is less satisfying than having classes.  People talk about "skill based" systems, but we really haven't seen a true skill based system in a long time.  It's mostly about trees these days, which are somehow less interesting than just having a class with several career paths.

Even the single layer of obfuscation called "damage types" has been gone a long time; we just have raw numbers floating around the screen.  How interesting is any game going to be if it is just about the fight between two health bars over who can shrink the slowest?  Maybe it's not the classes per se, but rather that there aren't any interesting differences between them.

Sadly I wont be supporting it since I'm pretty much against early access (paid betas), but hopefully its something that people will enjoy. After watching a video by TotalBiscuit (), I kinda of developed empathy(?) for the indie genre and respect for those that actually want to make games that people want and not just try to get a quick buck.

Be interesting to see if they've developed anything since the alpha that I played in (and enjoyed) a LONG time ago. It was promising, full of bugs but different and fun. Sort of. Was wondering when someone would take it up again...

Something tells me your main Otherland page needs a bit of an update. Doesn't seem to have been touched for a long time.

I loved the book series, but I saw this as a game several years ago. I don't think that re-releasing it on Steam is going to do much for it... but? who knows. If you want a look at a skill based system, look to Secret World or Darkfall. Darkfall actually reminded me more of the old Elder Scrolls Games, where using a skill would get you that skill up. A great class system, is Rift. You have skill trees, but you get to choose which trees you want for your character, and any class - because of the various trees, can be any character type. Each character gets 3 trees they choose out of about 9. And it's nearly impossible to gimp your character - but stranger things have happened.

I'm watching this one. So far, Steam reviews are mostly positive with the usual complaints of lag and feeling rushed, and other small bugs.
