imageDestiny | How a Dongle and a Re-Roll Got Me to Try Bungie’s MMO Again | MMORPG

I wasn’t overly fond of Destiny when it launched last year. I enjoyed the tight FPS controls on my PS4, but the hackneyed story, the repetitive progression, and the overall disjointed feeling of so many long loading screens between everything eventually pushed me away. But I recently came back, and this time I think I might stay for a while…

Great review but I feel well and truly screwed by these guys over the farce that was destiny launch and that was even more painful because I got suckered into the CE to add salt to the wound. However I will be checking out the dongle that looks promising and much needed.

Yeah, if you take one thing away from this, it should be the dongle. It takes some fiddling in the settings, but works beautifully and can be customized on a per game basis. Just note you need to have your PC or laptop close to the PS4 to do it.

Um... http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/927/view/news - There are LOADS of stories on Destiny over the past year. Big AAA game receiving a big expansion? That's worthy of coverage, despite your personal feelings towards the game.

Almost every game will improve after launch if development continues, which it always does for an MMO. However, first impressions are the most important. You can't push out a buggy mess and then hope you'll retain all you customers. Many leave due to a bad initial experience and will not return. I rarely give a game a second chance. If it blows out of the gate, it's dead to me.

I agree, it's "not" an MMO, but it does many MMO features better than most MMOs. Also, a few of my friends who are into doing the Destiny raids claim that 80 or 90% of their friends list is now people who they met through Destiny. It certainly seems to have a better idea about what an MMO should be than most MMOs these days.

I like reading about games I may never play, I like to see the various opinions and reviews as well as the re-reviews. Destiny is not my cup of tea, but that doesnt mean I do not enjoy keeping up with its iteration, same as with many other games.

with that dongle in existence i now can safely trade in my Destiny disc for something else. I choose my shooters on PS4 so i dont have to deal with a mouse, let alone compete against mouse users on a console.

I'm tempted to buy the Destiny PS4 because I don't want to wait for the Darth Vader themed PS4. Someone please talk me into waiting. My inner sith is speaking to me but it's muffled....

Wait for your star wars themed console. Destiny isnt a console seller. Nuff said.

Sounds like you did the audio in one take and had a lot of issues, maybe next time edit it and take out the stutters. All in all, this video did not really convince me to give this game another go :/

Works with all PS4 games with some configuration and tweaks per game. Sounds like your competing with mouse players nightmares have come true.

    Buggy mess?

There were features that Destiny (deliberately) did not have - some of which have been added some that Bungie have steadfastly refused to add; there were things that people did not like but if - if only - every game that launched could be such a buggy mess with so little server down time we would all be much happier.

And first impressions for millions of people have obviously been positive or else Activision couldn't report the play time statistics and sales that they have.

Doesn't mean there haven't been improvements but if we don't keep things in perspective developers will have "less" incentive to push out a "polished" game.

Wait is this an article about Destiny or an advertisement for the Cronusmax. Because honestly these types of things have been around for long periods of time and this one doesn't look like anything special. The XIM has been around for a while and a lot of my friends used that back when Black Ops 2 came out. It gives people an unfair advantage on the console when playing shooters against controller players, one of the best points of the console was everyone was on an even playing ground. Until modded controllers and these M/KB converters came out.

Someone needs to mention to the devs that we prefer to play Destiny using mouse and keyboard. . . on our PC!

Keyboard/mouse conversion like this should be against the EULA and earn you a ban from competitive play. That being said, Destiny is the "MMO" I've put the most time into, by a long shot, over the last year. I'm hundreds of hours in, and am literally counting down the minutes (66) until I get to leave work today to go home and play Taken King. I've got a larger friends list for raids/etc. in Destiny than I've had in a MMO since WoW: WotLK and the social experiences in Destiny have been on par if not better than any MMO I've ever played in 15+ years with this genre. It's also an excellent shooter. It's ruined other shooters for me. To the point where I hope I can stomach Halo 5 and Star Wars Battlefront after being spoiled by Destiny. 63 minutes.

It's funny, Destiny has featured a good, long grind, very little hand holding, no trinity, action combat, an equal focus on PvE and PvP, some pretty frustrating death penalty mechanics (Nightfall & Hard Mode Raids) among other things, yet one of the biggest complaints was "too grindy."

Now that the excellent, excellent lore is front and center, and the story is presented in a way that is easier to digest, the "grind" and "repetitive content" are the only flaws people can name - yet that grind is exactly what so many claim to want out of an MMORPG.

Lol, I have no idea about the raids. So I only really get 3rd party information. My raiding days are done. I generally play late at night while my wife is sleeping (right beside me) so no talkie for me.

GW2 went with a no roles idea, too, though.

Either way, I wasn't talking as much about the raid difficulty or configuration, as I was the social aspects. They've said from very early on that their idea is to allow people to pick it up and play, with their friends, without much time investment. They removed the 200+ hour barrier on most MMOs. If there was 200+ hours of meaningful story in an MMO these days I would consider this something tragic, but we're probably talking no more than 10-20 hours of TRUE story in a typical MMO and then the rest of the time you're grinding. That feels so broken for me now. Way too much other stuff out there to play.

You make a good point. I wonder if in the future we won't see devs experiment more with shorter play-cycle content-driven MMOs. Easier to make, designed to have people play for a month or two, and then come back when there's something new.
