I wasn’t overly fond of Destiny when it launched last year. I enjoyed the tight FPS controls on my PS4, but the hackneyed story, the repetitive progression, and the overall disjointed feeling of so many long loading screens between everything eventually pushed me away. But I recently came back, and this time I think I might stay for a while…

Yeah, if you take one thing away from this, it should be the dongle. It takes some fiddling in the settings, but works beautifully and can be customized on a per game basis. Just note you need to have your PC or laptop close to the PS4 to do it.

Now, which one of you will adorn me today?
Buggy mess?
There were features that Destiny (deliberately) did not have - some of which have been added some that Bungie have steadfastly refused to add; there were things that people did not like but if - if only - every game that launched could be such a buggy mess with so little server down time we would all be much happier.
And first impressions for millions of people have obviously been positive or else Activision couldn't report the play time statistics and sales that they have.
Doesn't mean there haven't been improvements but if we don't keep things in perspective developers will have "less" incentive to push out a "polished" game.

Now that the excellent, excellent lore is front and center, and the story is presented in a way that is easier to digest, the "grind" and "repetitive content" are the only flaws people can name - yet that grind is exactly what so many claim to want out of an MMORPG.
Good thing I'm terrified of PVP in Shooters. :proud:

GW2 went with a no roles idea, too, though.
Either way, I wasn't talking as much about the raid difficulty or configuration, as I was the social aspects. They've said from very early on that their idea is to allow people to pick it up and play, with their friends, without much time investment. They removed the 200+ hour barrier on most MMOs. If there was 200+ hours of meaningful story in an MMO these days I would consider this something tragic, but we're probably talking no more than 10-20 hours of TRUE story in a typical MMO and then the rest of the time you're grinding. That feels so broken for me now. Way too much other stuff out there to play.

You make a good point. I wonder if in the future we won't see devs experiment more with shorter play-cycle content-driven MMOs. Easier to make, designed to have people play for a month or two, and then come back when there's something new.
