Does anyone else think they should drop the Star Trek and just base another Space MMO off of Star Trek?
I'm not a Trekkie, I hate Star Trek, but I love space/future themes.
I'm not going to play Star Trek Online.
I would play the exact same game if it was Space Conquest Online.
For the simple reason of having someone ask
"Hey, that's cool! What are you playing?"
"Uhhh.... Star Trek Online" **hangs head**
Trekkies don't exactly have the best rep and I'm no nerd. I am a geek, but that's something totally different from a nerd. I love computers, I'm majoring in Comp. Sci. and I know more than almost anyoen (besides the teacher) in my CS classes.................... but the thing that seperates me from Nerds is I like girls, I can get girls, and I can get very pretty girls. It's hard enough to tell a new preppy chick that I play MMOs, I'm not going to tell her I play Star Trek Online.
That's just my reasoning. Not the topic of the post. The topic is:
Would you play Star Trek Online? If not, Would you play the exact same game if it was named something like Space Conquest Online? or even Space Race Grace Place Online? please explain why.

You are a Trekkie. You own the Wesley Crusher collectors card.
I have to say I have seen a lot of Star Trek games, and although this one sounds intresting, it is not lost on me that although I have played tens of Star Trek games, I have never played a good one.
I would have a lot more confidence in this game if it ditched the franchise and was willing to stand on it's own 2 feet as a video game popular in it's own right for entirely it's own worth.
I don't really get into franchise games. Star Wars is about the only franchise I have seen make the Jump to PC games nicely.
That's because the Star Wars movie money bought a real video game company that doesn't make JUST Star Wars games.

They used to make other games, but in the most recent past they have been putting out nothing but Star Wars this and Star Wars that. And some of them games seem quite trashy to me too.[b]
And I don't remember LucasArts being owned by anyone but Lucas. At least for the past 15+ years.

That lists most of their recent products. They haven't really released any other games but Star Wars in a long time.
My favorite all time Lucasarts game was probably XvT. And JtL for SWG didn't live up to the hype.
Yeah, and lots of the Star Wars games they have put out have been crappy.
Star Wars Rebellion was an interesting game but it went essentially nowhere. Dark Forces has gone into Jedi Knight Series and slowly but surely the main character over the various games turned into a Jedi. Force Commander was another flop.
All the games focus on Jedi. The worst was probably a first person shoot with a melee weapon just felt awkward.
But some of my favorite lucas arts games were not star wars related at all. The Dig, Full Throttle, Monkey Island, Sam And Max, Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle.
Ive been following Star Trek MMO rather closely. There conceptual artists are not game artists or interns....they are using the actual artists that designed all the Next Generation material.
I think there should be more SCI fi games out there....dropping Star Trek would make the gap wider
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I agree with you guys. Just look at D&D online - a crappy game that's just trading on a name.
I refuse to pay for a label. Give me value for money.
The race doesn't always go to the swiftest, nor the battle to the strongest, but that's the way to bet.
I realize that there are alot of Star Trek fans out there, but the majority of MMO players are not.

I liked FFXI and also WOW, I'm usually quite comfortable with game franchises.
They are after all only famous for making video games, which is what I am looking to buy.
I personally am going to judge this game on its own merits and not on the franchise it is associated with. While I did like some of TNG when they examined issues related to the human experience and society as a whole, I am by no means a fan of the Star Trek franchise. Also, the ultra-liberal philosophies expressed in TNG were not appealing to me. However the overall concept of this game does seam interesting, and basing it on an existing franchise does give them a plethora of content to work into the game.
If playing this game is making you concerned about your social image, specifically related to females, I have a simple solution that I use everyday. Do not tell anyone! That is the beauty of MMORPGs; no one has to know about your alter ego and the world it resides in. For example: A few days before Valentines Day I attended a lingerie party where I spent the night drinking and partying with models. I did not even mention the word "computer" the entire night. If the topic does come up, just try and remember the words of the late great Rodney Dangerfield, "You lie to women, not to your dad!"

STO is going to suck. No Star Trek game I have ever seen was worth playing. Factoring out the so-called "nerd" factor altogether I have no intention of going anywhere NEAR a Star Trek MMO until/unless they release a free trial first. I've seen dozens of Star Trek games on the PC over the years. And I even saw Nettrek back in unix days. None of them were very good or fun to be honest.
So, for me, it's quite simple: I don't reall care about any 'nerd' factor associated with Star Trek. Star Trek is not really considered "nerdy" in most circles anymore unless you go to conventions or run around dressed up like Data/Spock or whatever. It's pretty mainstream now-days. But it's got a HORRIBLE rep in the gaming market. Most of us who have seen the various attempts at Star Trek titles aren't even watching for this MMO. Frankly I could care less about it. I don't think it'll be worth a crap.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

So tell the chicks that you play Eve online and they are all over you? Right...

I'm a Trekkie, and I am keeping an eye on this game. Dunno if I'll buy it just because it's Star Trek (there have been some pretty bad ST games made), but I may try to get in on the beta. The only thing that worries me so far is that at launch you can only play as a member of StarFleet, so you can't be a Romulan or a Klingon. At least that's the plan for now.
Anyway, I would still look into the game even if it wasn't Star Trek. Ever since leaving SWG, I have been jones'ing for a good Space/Sci-Fi MMORPG, with lots of space combat (like JTL space combat in SWG). So far (from the ones I've tried) none have been better than SWG (pre-NGE that is).

I liked from Voyager series ... umm... I mean I liked from Seven of Nine
I have actually watched all Star Trek orginal and Start Trek The Next Generaion episodes at least once. I also have watched about half of Deep Space 9 and Voyagar episodes, until Finnish TV station stopped sending them I think that they finally did realise that all episodes are same...
Short version of Star Trek storyline from episodes 1 to N:
1. Ship flies around
2. Something really bad happens
3. Crew chit-chat with magic-mysterious-techno-jimbo-jambo
4. Crew solves problem
5. Ship continues flying like nothing happened
