Harry Potter MMORPG

danmax67danmax67 Member UncommonPosts: 37
I imagine this has been discussed before, but I recently read the Harry Potter books. They aren't bad - better than I was expecting.  Anyway, the thought occurred to me that that world would make a good setting for an mmorpg.  It could even break the 'trinity' mold in a good way.  Has anyone heard of any plans for such? Is there anything out there similar?

It is a great idea danmax but people do not like original ideas here and talk of breaking the holy trinity or any unique classes so wear a flame shield.

I really was hoping that I wasn't going to throw up in my mouth today...

in all honesty, I don't mind Harry Potter in the story sense, but I don't think the IP lends towards anything more than childish frivolities. `  Uh oh! That spell backfired! Now Ron is turned into a mushroom! Quick Hagred will know what to do! `

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

There was an indie company claiming they are working on a Harry Potter MMO with Warner Bros looking over their shoulders.
At no point did anyone think that they could come up with quality good enough for WB to approve in the end.
I don't remember if it was officially shut down or if they just gave up or whatever though.

I could see a Skyrim type of magic system used in a MMO with magic being the only type of attack....Theres plenty of lore....I think it could work but would have to be done very well.

Uh, Harry Potter isn't that original and making computer games based on something there is a movie about isn't either.

Orphan kid with nasty step-parents get wonderful ability and becomes popular and saves the world. Harry himself is suspicious similar to Tim from books of magic.

The real problem with making a MMO out of it is however to make a good and fun magic system, just taking the usual with cooldowns and a bunch of spells depending on your level and specc would feel pretty poor in a game everyone would play magic user.

I don't think mmos bring the same level of profit as the movie. Look at lord of the rings, super popular book/ movie really un popular game.

It is still in the making actually, after reading your post OP. I found some info for you on the net about it. Look at thewizardingworldonline  dot com  for the info about the Harry Potter mmorpg. Beta to start in 2016 or 2017, that they say.

They also say they will soon show screenshots and videos about the product.

Edit : It looks like they are still going to push the project but won't use the names or info about the IP of Harry Potter for now but the game will remain the same about a wizard and his friends etc..etc..

Thank you. Very interesting. I get the sense it's probably not progressing as they hope though, and it does not have the support of whoever owns HP  :(

This Wizarding World Online? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/186771546/the-wizarding-world-online Kickstarter was cancelled due to copyright issues. That doesn't mean it absolutely won't get made, but doesn't bode well. As far as if it deserves to be an MMO or not - I think it would make a fine game, particularly for the younger crowd. All depends on how it's implemented I suppose. You wouldn't want to take an existing MMO and just reskin it. From what I hear, WIzard 101 is pretty close to (at least what I imagine would be) Harry Potter Online.

This subject comes up so many times but I've never understood why. As a setting for an MMO I think it's just terrible. You basically have wizards. That's pretty much it really, wizards. I suppose class balance would be easy though, y'know, wizards.

As a single player game I could see it but not an MMO. You need variety for MMO's to work and it's missing in Harry Potter. Possibly one of the worst choices of IP for an MMO.

I'm not so sure. I think the whole tank/healer/dps thing is too constrictive.  You wouldn't need that with HP.  Also, there's plenty of lore and a rich variety of monsters, items and adventures. Regardless, whether it's a good idea or bad, I'm surprised it hasn't been done. They made a Matrix MMO for example. As much as I love the Matrix, it doesn't seem like an MMO setting conducive to a good game.  I never played it, so I have no idea if the game was good or bad.

What if Blizzard picked up the IP? Think they could do it?
  • AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630
HP is an example of a great IP that doesn't necessarily lend itself to a great mmo.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
