That sounds like a load of advertising too me, which chris roberts has been accussed of focusing on and not the actual game.
i honestly cant understand how anyone could ever defend SC. Derek Smart provided incentives to think criticaly about the whole project, it doesnt matter what you think about him. A critical investigation of SC is something that we gamers will profit from. I could write so much, how i know some developers (their work/ forums) who burn for a full fledged game 7-9 million € in in over 2 years as a 25 members team (deep silver as publisher). now imagine 200 people, working for years and they have so little to show. Btw, Chris Roberts answer is a classical example of shifting responsibilities and making it personal. Only people that have to hife something do that.
But yeah, some dumb nuts will defend SC till their own nuts drop off...
CrazKanuk said: What Derek Smart really needs is the tech that SC is developing. Oh WAIT!!! That's why this all came up in the first place. It's Derek's MO down to a "T"
What tech? Demo tech? Video tech? Hangar Simulator 2015? World of Tanks in space?
I don't give two shits about DS, never heard of the guy before SC. But there's been a whole helluva lot of "donation" campaigns and publicity appearances done, and relatively little actual work or progress shown over the four years of development.
Without the Escapist article, I would never have even looked into the progress (or lack thereof) being made on SC. So you can fault (I guess?) them for drawing attention to this lack of progress on (what may be) false claims against CR. But you can't deny that other studios, with less funds and in the same amount of time, have released completed projects that have been considered incredible works (aforementioned World of Warcraft and ES:Skyrim). The fact that CIG isn't even close to providing a working beta of their own project is less than reassuring.
That because most people are taking what chris roberts says as the truth, i see people keep asking for proof who these people are who gave the information to the person who wrote the article, but chris roberts hasn't shown anything that everything is fine and dandy at Star Citizen either, if it was me being accused of these things and i knew everything was fine with the project i would have no problem showing proof.
So people are paying to go to a convention to be shown stuff they should be shown anyway for free, seems like they are just trying to get more money out of the fanatics.
I mentioned last night because a thought came into my head and someone just wanted to have an argument about it which was, Derek Smart has made games so he knows how the process works, do you not think he might of noticed chris wasn't make as much progress as he should of done over them years.
But all someone wanted to do was argue about the quality of Derek Smarts game, it doesn't matter about the quailty of his games, he has made games and knows the process.
I don't know any of his games and is quite irrelevant in my view.
With all due respect, I've made a game, my son has made a game, and we've both played each others game. So we've, collectively, both had the same amount of experience in making games as Derek has, and our games have been played by more people. That's an exaggeration, of course, but if you think that Derek Smart knows about the game making process and how to make games well, then you're obviously not familiar with it. It's basically like saying that CR made Wing Commander: The Movie, so he must know how to make movies.
The most successful game Derek Smart has had a part in is Alganon Online, which was created almost entirely by Quest Online, a company that Derek came in to consult on and ended up convincing investors to oust the existing chairman (and founder) and put him in that place.
I'm very, very interested to know why you feel like the quality of game that Derek produces is irrelevant? He may understand the process for creating a game, but that has very little to do with the execution of said process. If creating a game was simply about following a set process, I'm sure it'd be as easy as collecting trash. The reality is that it isn't. So, yes, the quality of game released means everything. If you're not releasing a quality game, it means you don't understand the core concepts that you're executing. In Derek's case, he is obviously using an agile methodology where he feels like "We can get it out now and fix it later".
Also, you don't need to go to citizen con to get these videos. They won't be kept secret. Just as with every conference, they will likely be released into the wild following the conference.
As far as paying to get in, that's pretty much par for the course. I'd never pay it. Then again, I'd be willing to bet that there will be more people there than people who have bought Derek Smart's LoD MMO.

Not only that! They advertise, defend and fight forum wars - for free. It reminds me of certain kind of social structures. They are rarely based on rationality and critical thinking.
Even someone that has never made an mmorpg but has been in a lot of beta's and released mmorpg, would understand the first year or two is making the game engine which would create the world and get it ready for beta. If CR would just show us that engine and what he created with it other than the three modules it would at least show where some of the money went.
Sad part is he can't even show that but can keep attacking DS just to say look over here and not this way. That con is as old as our civilization is.

The problem is that the quality is a major part of the process.
Trust me, the last thing that I'm trying to do is throw poop at someone for attempting to make a logical argument. Generally, yes, you're right. Derek Smart has made games, therefore we'd make the assumption that he knows how to make a game. However, in that same vein of logic, we could argue that Chris Roberts has also made games, so between the two there is very little difference. CRs biggest downfall has always been ambition.
Chris has already said previously that he thinks it will take $100 million to make it (someone can probably find a source for this). So, yes, I think they probably do need it. I'm sure they have enough money to get them to where they need to go, but for polish and flashy, they probably need more. Collectively, their game has more people invested in it than, probably, 99% of mmos (if we are to believe that nearly 1,000,000 people have backed it). So a conference isn't all that illogical.
I can see why people are suspicious, too. Actually, I think it was GeezerGamer who said he was on the fence, and I told him, outright, that I wouldn't be backing it in the current climate, and I'm sure you'd find I'm a stalwart defender of crowdfunding in general, and I'll openly admit to being a CR fan.
Yeah, Freelancer was the last space flight sim. Also, he got the boot from that project for being overly ambitious. Freelancer was intended to be SC, but it was way over budget and over time. Either way, the game itself was spectacular. I think it won a shit-ton of awards too (can't remember). So I'm confident we'll at least get a Freelancer 2. What I think people mostly want is to see what Freelancer was supposed to be.
He hasn't made a game in 12 years because he sold his company to Microsoft. Period. He's, basically, produced movies since then. This is what makes all the long con theories just ridiculous. There would be less money left, right now, than what CRs net worth is already. So why the hell bust your ass for less money than what you already have in the bank? I know you're making logical arguments in this thread, so I think you are at least someone who can appreciate that argument.
@AnnaTS Name one game DS has made in 12 years that's worth buy never mind playing? I know a lot of people that know how to make a game.....they suck at it but they know. Just because someone knows the process to making a game does not mean they can make a good one......You said before you won't/are not taking sides but you are....if you are searching for the truth many people have posted with it .....you don't want to either read it or believe it......you have posted repeatedly almost the same stuff over and over with the same invalid points.......L2Read it helps.....people just need to let them make the dam game already and stop this mindless crap it's helping literally no one on either side.....

Well.... I´d agree about the first part, say that the second depends on what you are making and that the third part contradicts it self. The fourth part is good in theory but history have shown that it would just lead to more anger and demands to show more... That is how it has gone down pretty much in ever game community i have been part of.

Any update on this? Wasn't the deadline the 5th of October for the apology. I can't find any updates since then.
I haven't seen a retraction, apology or proof of the allegations presented in the story.
The ball is in E's court.
Sorry Saxx0n but you are completely wrong. CIG threatened lawsuit if The Escapist did not apologize by EOD Monday. On Monday the Escapist did not only refuse to apologize they also doubled up and raised by saying they will continue to write articles about this and bring forth more sources. So now the ball is in CIG's court and they have to either file suit or tug their tail and stop threatening journalists.
Update:The Escapist, notwithstanding Cloud Imperium Games' notice and posting, stands by its coverage of Star Citizen and intends to continue to investigate the developing story. Since publishing our original stories, we have been contacted by, and are currently interviewing, additional sources corroborating a variety of the reported allegations. Additionally, if Mr. Roberts' offer for The Escapist to "meet the developers making the game and see how we're building one of the most ambitious PC games first hand" remains open, we take the opportunity to accept such invitation so as to hopefully provide the public with sufficient information and opportunity to vet such sources' allegations and claims for themselves. We have also communicated the foregoing directly to Cloud Imperium Games. [source]

Voicing a negative opinion is fine, continually doing so on the same game is basically just trolling." - Michael Bitton Community Manager, MMORPG.com
"As an online discussion about Star Citizen grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Derek Smart approaches 1" - MrSnuffles's law
"I am jumping in here a bit without knowing exactly what you all or talking about." - SEANMCAD
I find it fascinating how people think the allegations from this article are factual without a shred of proof. The site that posted the article is reportedly in financial straits after huge layoffs in the past and is being propped up by the parent company currently. It has been reported that the site has had a huge influx of traffic since posting the story. Since this article is founded in uncovering a fraud or scam do you think the article itself is a fraud or scam by the site to increase revenue? So far they have failed to prove otherwise.
If wrongs have been committed by CIG there are laws in the United States that fully address possible issues from employment violations to fraud. The reality of this situation is a person in the United States would of course acquire an attorney far before rushing in as a defender of social justice. Reality also covers that CIG is a private company and ultimately what they do is basically nobody's business. Consumers choose to spend their money where and how they want.
It will be interesting to see how this proceeds in the coming months.
It wasn't the article that brought in the controversy. if it had just been that the SC love and hate brigade would have sniped each other over the weekend and it would have fallen into background noise. It was the response that gave this thing momentum. Generally speaking if you have a bunch of allegations some very serious and some less so, among them anger management, and people afraid to tell boss no. Then one might not want to sendi out a public rebuttal that reads like a psychological case study, and proves no one told him hey boss this is a bad idea. It lends credence to those allegations which give the others a second look.
Subscribers voluntarily donate money every month for creating the CIG material. Thats on top of the crowdfunding pledge packages. Finding THAT out would have taken you 2 Minutes on Google.

Name 1 DS kickstart project?
You are probably better off trying to get a better conversation from talking to a wall, it is so mind numbing this thread i have never been in a thread like this.
But if everything does go belly up or the game that does get released is not what you expected, please don't come on the forum whining about it, we had enough of that from archeage.
I made a visit to the Official forums and i got greeted with some really scary brainwashed and cult like paranoia. It was unreal.
I am Derek Smart according to this forensic linguist:
As you can imagine it went downhill from there. Don't go there, the place is creepy as hell. You either are Derek Smart or they conjure up Derek Smart to whatever you say as an answer.
I think i start writing a book about brainwashed, cult like behavior of gamers. It's a pretty nice subject and there is plenty of material to study.

Yes DS knows how to create games. Awesome gameplay and no bugs after 5 years of development.
*irony off*
Please show us i am really interested in what you have to show.
I am IT business manager and no game dev.
Or do reviewers need to have games released to be able to write an article of it?
That's not logical.

Well.... I´d agree about the first part, say that the second depends on what you are making and that the third part contradicts it self. The fourth part is good in theory but history have shown that it would just lead to more anger and demands to show more... That is how it has gone down pretty much in ever game community i have been part of.

Update: The Escapist, notwithstanding Cloud Imperium Games' notice and posting, stands by its coverage of Star Citizen and intends to continue to investigate the developing story. [source]

Put it towards the dam game instead!
But if everything does go belly up or the game that does get released is not what you expected, please don't come on the forum whining about it, we had enough of that from archeage.
No. EA doesn't constitute "crowdfunding"because you get product to test and can return it within 48 hours if it doesnt meet your criteria.
EA has issues but imho its on a totally seperate spectrum.
