as it seems like Roberts has finally learned his lesson. Today he refused to give a release date (even though he was clearly tempted).
Actually that is not true. They announced Squadron 42 for 2016. Even labeled as "pre-order". They won't complete that in any time earlier than 2018. No way. He is making a bait-and-switch again. Later, he releases just the 1st chapter. That will make people pissed, because they were mislead to believe that would come complete by 2016.
He never learn.
And he is selling capital ships, that won't be playable in a MMO before 2020. Selling futures, while he could be selling just present or features to be soon released.
While only those who are crazy enough buy them, that have a reflex in the public as a whole (except the own WK obviously), who will consider that as total abuse of consumers and will look to the game with a bad perception, which can make they think that is bad, even if its good, or bitch more about minor bugs that they wouldn't care so much otherwise.
Their tactics are always to get the money earlier, ignoring the consequences in the medium/long term. Ignoring that they are dealing with a niche and ruining with the trust of many, and ruining how they will see/evaluate the game at the end.
This game, in the best scenario, will survive for a few years in eternal alpha, and will die soon after its release.
Until CR ruins crowdfunding, sad a really good developer that has an even better idea will lose out because of people like CR. Nope just ignore the real problem he could be causing.
Let me correct you first then respond so we can have an actual conversation.
"I think CR may be responsible for ruining crowdfunding if Star Citizen is not successful". - Brenics
Don't think anyone's ignoring that possibility, but I don't think it would ruin crowdfunding as it is currently. Star Citizen is an anomaly as far as crowdfunding goes - no other game comes even remotely close to the size and scope.
Most of the well-known games that have spawned from crowdfunding have been quite successful thus far. Shadowrun series, Divinity OS, Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity and lots more. Those games were all made for around 2-3 million in backer funds. Contrast that with Star Citizen, which is 90 million. In reality, the typical games that we see in crowdfunding are a different breed than Star Citizen - a different category altogether.
Also, we've had some high-profile controversy regarding Double Fine Adventure and Pathfinder Online, yet those problems haven't slowed down the recent kickstarter campaigns for Divinity OS 2 and/or Battletech, have they?
So do I think it's possible that Star Citizen's potential failure may impact another potential future endeavor of similar scope with similar mass-appeal? Sure, it's possible. At the same time, looking at the controversy surrounding the more typical-sized kickstarters, those fiascos haven't seemed to affect people backing other projects.
Frankly, I'd give it a 50/50 chance that Star Citizen's potential failure would affect a similar project in the future. But I can't even imagine what a similar project would look like, with regards to scope and enthusiasm. Star Citizen may be a once-in-a-lifetime event with regards to crowdfunding. No way to know.

All because their marketing approach.
2016 is a pretty broad release date. I think it's reasonable, based on what I've seen. But only for Squadron42, and only for a small campaign. I think that the PU is another year off from that - at least in completion.
I think it would be a huge mistake for them to release the final game in increments.
So who has a quick and dirty update? I ended up in a 215 man fleet in EVE exactly as the stream started, so I dumped it.
Is there a bare bones working game yet? Are all the modules interconnected? Does it look like SC is still ready for a full release by end of 2016 as their wiki states?

Yes it looks like the bare bones game is working, at least internally. Think there's a youtube video of it. 20 minute demo. The core features are all in. FPS, Spaceflight, Multicrew, station landings, physics, missions, huge map with many locations, etc.
Still missing loads of features though, such as FPS AI, planetary landings, PVP sliders, insurance and more.
I think the first chapter of SQ42 (small campaign) is ready for release by end of 2016, but I don't know. It's just a guess. I don't think PU will be ready by then. Again, another estimation based what I saw.
If anything gets released sooner, I will be very surprised.

Yea... except they barely have a 20v20 fleet situation. He's "hoping" for up to 40v40.. hopefully.
None of the modules are complete but they are giving you a system "soon" that will allow you to have a system and some planets.
1 chapter.... of SQ42..... by the end of next year... maybe.
Alpha 2.0 or whatever looks pretty but is an awful lot of fluff and very minimal gameplay.
And I do agree with the pyramid scheme scam. It's getting worse. Why do they need more money? No Man's Sky is doing 5x the game, more universe, more diversity with.... what like 4-5 people?
LOL @Xeno.phon So 2013 passed and people said that 2014 passed, now 2015 is going to past. So let me ask you how much money and ships should everyone keep giving him? Like I said this could go on till 2020, if you look at what he has been doing 2020 isn't really unrealistic.
I use 2016 as the date because that is when RSI has stated they want a persistent universe beta out by. You wouldnt know that though, seeing as you are just on the drama queen train and dont actually read the news they put out.
Really though, people like you dont matter. As I said, the only thing that matters is that they put out a decent game in a reasonable time frame (AAA dev avg 4y, new team so I give them 5).
Sounds to me like you not noly dont know what you are talking about in regards to RSI, but dont even know about the industry itself. So again, you dont matter.
6 p.m. til after midnight. The main presentation was 9.30 - 11.33 p.m.
Lots of org/guild meetings at the location (Concorde is an awesome bird).
"Operation Pitchfork" (= invading Vanduul space at the end of Beta) FTW ! ;-) Of course we were especially pleased with the Gary Oldman speech announcing "War against the Vanduul" So Gary Oldman is a steely eyed missile man and possibly overall commander of "Operation Pitchfork" ;-)
Were you an original KS backer? If so why didn't you get your money back when they announced the expanded vision for SC that you apparently don't agree with? If you are not a KS backer then what is your damage?
I am an original backer. Because the original dream was good.
I don't think you people are getting this.
For example, this is an OWPvP game right? So pirates have disabled this comm satellite and you need to go fix it. (lets just use the shown example) So what a-holes are GOING to do (because they can't help themselves) is wait for you to go EVA. You go into the hole, they shoot your butt, and then they steal your ship.
Why? Because they're a-holes. We don't need EVA. Give us some ships, give us some baddies, and let us fly around. How well did Dust work for Eve? Not well. This is worse.
And let's also be brutally honest, while the game looks pretty, who wants to take 5-10 minutes to run to a platform to find your ship (if you run to the right platform)? No one. That's not the meat-and-potatoes of the game. You didn't need it in Privateer/Freelancer, you don't need it now.
But yes, I just want them to release SOMETHING. Alpha 2.0 seems like something and it's better than nothing. But, again, on the original timescale stuff should have released....
Instead we get another new ship.. if you pay 50. And another new ship.... only 250 this time. Oh, and now a custom skin, that's 45. But no game release in sight.
I can't be the only person to look at this development, then look at the development of something like No Man's Sky and draw instant comparisons can I?
I would bet you are. Do you know the difference between procedurally generated and hand built? I am betting you don't. If you did you would realize just exactly how asinine that comparison is.
I can understand your frustration, I even agree with some of it but I advise you to figure out what you are talking about before you further embarrass yourself with this particular comparison.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
Because probably it's for people like me who didn't watch, but will at a later date (If you can). Quick skim at work and I get an idea of whats happening.
Seems to me that in the press demo the marines won (2 survivors) and flew back to the station, while at the Conference the pirates won and stole the Constellation.
LOL @Xeno.phon So 2013 passed and people said that 2014 passed, now 2015 is going to past. So let me ask you how much money and ships should everyone keep giving him? Like I said this could go on till 2020, if you look at what he has been doing 2020 isn't really unrealistic.

So I guess 2016 is cool but didn't CR say he was releasing in 2013? Or was that a date where he wanted to expand the business because this sure isn't about making a game anymore, it is about building a business.

A greater number of new Star Citizen features were announced
for the upcoming 2.0 alpha. More than 38 playable missions are planned

km. That gives a 200 quadrillion cubic km space to explore. It’s filled

security station called Post Kareah, and a Covalex Shipping Hub. There
will also be various research satellites and service platforms."

Now, @Ikeda tell us the announced release date of NMS.
Any date. PS, console .... your choice ...
How about the beginning of Beta testing ..... ?
And .... tell us about the story next.
I can't argue that. You're right. But NMS has 2% of the staff of SC.
Let's use E:D instead. They've released in 1/4 of the time as SC. They also didn't lose track of everything.
Think about all the warping and jumping and whatnot. SC's doing the exact same thing. So take the gripes of people who don't like warping around space and SC is doing that. They DID mention somehow fast forwarding that a bit for SC but we'll have to see.
And the way that SC's talking about (releasing systems at a time) seems exactly like E:D wherein everything isn't completely there with stuff being added.
I just don't know man... I don't feel good ju-ju and I tend to be right in my pessimism any more. I hope I'm not and you guys are proven right but time-after-time dev's just let us down anymore.
So I guess 2016 is cool but didn't CR say he was releasing in 2013?
CR also said the release would not be delayed by stretch goals... You are better off at this point of forgetting about this game and then being surprised in 2016, 2017 or 2018 when a playable version is actually released and stop expecting CR to follow through on the things he says.
