For the past couple of Lists, Ripper X and I have brought you the Five Best MMOs for New Players and Five MMOs for Experienced Players. As promised, this week we’re taking a look at five “deep cuts” for the most hardcore of players out there, who are either looking for intense PvP experiences, open world sandbox mayhem, or a glimpse into the history and legacy of the MMO genre.

I resubbed to Asheron's call some time ago as it was one of my favorites, but wow the steep learning curve was more than I was ready for. Amazing how quickly you forget the complexities.
It's like FFXI; Its players are too busy playing the game to be out shilling or ranting on forums.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

"Compared to some new games EQ might be considered hardcore PvE. But the article is about hardcore PvP and compared to its peers of the day Lineage, UO, and AC, EQ was not a hardcore game nor was it really a pvp game.
When I played Lineage people talked about DAoC not EQ. It's just cool to love on EQ now. EQ and EQ2 have always had pretty crappy pvp compared to games that were designed with that in mind."
From the top of the article:

The article isn't about hardcore PvP MMO's specifically, but hardcore MMO's in general, be they PvP or PvE oriented. It's actually a pretty good list but I think DAoC should be on there myself.
Tried stepping back into the game a couple years ago. The ambient noises alone, from the wind to a door creaking, bring back chills and memories.
It is a mixed bag.
In some ways a pretty hollow experience if you have memories of the ~2003 days. The economy seems pretty broken, and some aspects of the PVP are out of balance. The various factions and alliances that made the server interesting are a shell of what they were. The world feels good, and there is a definite player base around. Ran in with some pretty good people and enjoyed leveling up with them.
At a certain point I realized I was just playing for nostalgia's sake, and focused on other things. Definitely worth a try if you're interested though.
