Still cant find a game that swept me away like EQ1 and DAoC did. I would still be playing EQ1 on and off if the wife didnt hate the interface so much lol

Funny I never considered Everquest a hardcore MMO unless you count in the ridiculous raiding in the original game which most players never bothered with because it was dominated by a few large guilds.   Personally I think DAoC was far more hardcore because of the top notch PVP.  The Darkness Falls dungeon during change over was a hoot.

I resubbed to Asheron's call some time ago as it was one of my favorites, but wow the steep learning curve was more than I was ready for.  Amazing how quickly you forget the complexities.

EQOA was pretty hard core and one of the best MKO's I have ever played. It wasn't even on PC wither it was on PS2!

It burns my eyes to see EQ1 called Daybreaks flagship game - sure Daybreak owns it today, but the game was made by 989 studios whose employees are long gone - the design for eq1 was McQuaid, concept was Smedley.
989 Studios was a division of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) that developed games for the PlayStation consoles and Windows personal computers. Their games include EverQuest, Twisted Metal III and 4, Syphon Filter and Syphon Filter 2, Jet Moto 3, Bust a Groove, and others. It now exists as the 989 Sports brand owned by SCEA that produces sports games. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/989_Studios 989 Studios was just an off shoot of SOE because if the game flopped they didnt want it part of the SoE name because it was all new territory for them and would make the compaany look bad if it did fail. On that though i would have to agree i would suspect all the origiinaly employee who made EQ are probaly gone from the company but they maybe a couple still around.

That's not the list I would have come up with for hardcore pvp. It is very sad that EQ is the top of that list. It's neither hardcore or pvp oriented.

Mine would have looked something like this:
    5. DAoC
    4. Darkfall / DF:UW
    3. Asheron's Call
    2. UO
    1. Lineage and Lineage 2

I'm cheating a little bit with numbers 1 and 4, but there is no doubt in my mind that Lineage (and later Lineage 2) are the kings of pvp hardcore with xp loss, item drops, and guild politics.
who are either looking for intense PvP experiences, open world sandbox mayhem, or a glimpse into the history and legacy of the MMO genre Quote from ripperX it wasnt just about PvP games. EQ1 was a rather hardcore game pve wise imo compared to new MMO with the death penalties and all that assosciated with it back in the day it might even have been considered worst dieing in EQ then a full loot game such as darkfall since gear was easy to come by in DF while XP was not so much with the potential of loosing all equipment if u died where you couldnt get your body back. Either way Everyone will have a different list from there own experiences and all that.

Daoc deserves an honorable mention me thinks.  I've been trying to fill the void that game left in me for many years now.

It's one of those titles that gets overlooked all the time.

It's like FFXI; Its players are too busy playing the game to be out shilling or ranting on forums.

If you want hardcore, Mortal Online should be on the list for sure. It may not be the best, but it is definitely hardcore.

Compared to some new games EQ might be considered hardcore PvE. But the article is about hardcore PvP and compared to its peers of the day Lineage, UO, and AC, EQ was not a hardcore game nor was it really a pvp game.

When I played Lineage people talked about DAoC not EQ. It's just cool to love on EQ now. EQ and EQ2 have always had pretty crappy pvp compared to games that were designed with that in mind.

I dunno Fancy the Famous bard made an ammusing appearance on the PvP servers where he would train 20 Sandgiants on enemy groups killing them all where they then lost a few hours of XP grinding aswell as time needed to get there loot back. Creative use of game mechanics one would say lol
His antics cause a no rule's pvp server into one with rules lol

From the top of the article:

The article isn't about hardcore PvP MMO's specifically, but hardcore MMO's in general, be they PvP or PvE oriented. It's actually a pretty good list but I think DAoC should be on there myself.

I have so many fond memories of Asherons Call Darktide PVP. It was truly the best MMORPG experience I've ever had.

Tried stepping back into the game a couple years ago. The ambient noises alone, from the wind to a door creaking, bring back chills and memories.

    It is a mixed bag.

In some ways a pretty hollow experience if you have memories of the ~2003 days. The economy seems pretty broken, and some aspects of the PVP are out of balance. The various factions and alliances that made the server interesting are a shell of what they were. The world feels good, and there is a definite player base around. Ran in with some pretty good people and enjoyed leveling up with them.

At a certain point I realized I was just playing for nostalgia's sake, and focused on other things. Definitely worth a try if you're interested though.

Huh?  It is just ludicrous to use the word hardcore and EQ in the same sentence!  All the other games in the list were light years more hardcore than EQ.  It is not even worth trying to make a comparison.  Gamers that could not handle the other games migrated to EQ because it was much easier.

I would go back to EQ if they would overhaul the UI. It just feels so damned clunky these days with the quality-of-life UI improvements that we have seen in gaming.
